Wait you still have to manually switch boxes when it gets full???? I could have sworn that was a R/B/Y only thing!
I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary myself. :O
Odd. I didn't have this much trouble in Su/Mo or even in R/B/Y.
If you're using Paralysis to improve your odds, stop it. PAR BRN and PSN do not increase the catch rate, and SLP and FRZ only increase it by a flat 4%.
I've been using SLP a lot with the occasional PAR. Still feels really difficult.

The odds in RBY are crazy good. When you SLP a pokemon and throw an Ultra Ball, you have AT MINIMUM, a 17% chance to catch it. It doesn't matter if you're fighting Mewtwo at full health, just status it and chuck balls at it.

Meanwhile Gold and Silver have a paltry 4% baseline under the same conditions.

Dear god, why did they give the beasts roar? I've got Suicune all whittled down but he keeps roaring away after a mean look.

Luckily from hunting so hard I also ran into Raikou but jesus this is rough.

We just became best friends. Thank you. I've been looking for heracross for 4 days. Thanks to that program I found one in less than 5 minutes.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like

Yeah see I'm not playing this cat and mouse game again with the 3 Dogs I'm just going to clone the Master Ball and throw it at them as soon as I see them and just an FYI to anyone planning to transfer your Pokemon from Pokemon Silver to the PokeBank it doesn't matter what Pokeball you used it gets converted to Pokeball automatically once you transfer to PokeBank.

I forgot how extremely frustrating it is to catch a LVL 40 Lugia is like. It has the standard hard as fuck catch rate but also has recover. Fucking recover. Luckily I got it in less than 10 balls.

And now to hunt down those damn legendary doggys.

Good god, this. Hahaha

This has got to be the most difficult catch rates of any Pokemon game to date. I'm wondering how tf I'm going to catch legendaries.

I’ve had zero trouble catching anything and I never thought it was tough back then either. I’m not trying to sound elitist - I just don’t know why it could be so tough for you!

Took me 15 pokeballs to catch a common aipom. Always broke out in third roll. I got crap luck.

After getting surf I tried to see if you can get to Kanto early, and you totally can. Can't go very far but its mind blowing to me that you can discover that by accident way earlier than most people actually would. I thought for sure there would be some kind of block to prevent players from discovering that twist, but nope. Such a cool game.

Oh neat, I will use this when I next replay the Gen 2 games.

Yeah I did that as well, though honestly Kanto wasn't really a big secret to me as I brought Silver some time after it had launched so I was somewhat aware that we would travel there.

I'm shocked that the one time I actually decide I really want Miltank in my team, I catch it with the first poke ball, usually this gal is busting out of all my great and even ultra balls so I just KO it out of contempt.

Seriously was it always this hard to capture Pokémon???

This. Wasted like 15 Great Balls trying to catch Magmar. Lots and lots of "normal" Pokemon have been breaking out even in the red.

So I started shiny breeding (using the Ditto "glitch" method). Hatching is a SLOG in these games. Never did it when I was a kid, but not having at least abilities to halve the number of steps is making this sad. Can't beat those shiny odds, though.

I'm not sure if will fly in Pokemon Bank, but you can use another glitch to easily make any Pokemon shiny.

I used my Return TM sadly but Sunday, I'm going to get another one (two with cloning!) to test this out. ChickasaurusGL's YouTube channel is a goldmine for Pokemon glitches.

Dude, I'm really really thinking about doing that.

But I've got Suicune low and finally saw Raikou. Maybe use the masterball on Raikou, and try to actually catch Suicune. It's not like I don't already have very good 6 Gen ones on Sun already. So it's all kind of a wash for me anyways.

But man it's frustrating.

Got Silver. I have a long bus ride tomorrow, this game will keep me company.

Some questions:
-Tyrogue is available only after you get Waterfall right?
-Is it still safe to clone items/mons?
-where to catch chincou?

-Yes
-I wouldn't know, if it's like R,B,G,&Y it should be, but wait for someone else on that.
-I always got mine in New Bark with the good rod, there's other locations here:

Yes, cloning is safe. Heck, it's probably easier because all you have to do to interrupt the save is tap the touch screen. I never did this on my Game Boy Color when I was a kid, but I can say cloning here is super easy.

It could be worse, at least it's not like FRLG where if a beast ends a battle with roar they disappear forever.

I love this gen but it's crazy you can beat the 8th gym with Pokemon barely in their 30's.

Having a Pidgeotto by the time I'm ready for Victory Road is not a thing that should happen.

In the mean time I'm going to be resetting for one of these guys:

Assuming it works? I could never find out whether DV's were fixed for these kinds of pokemon in Gen 2. I know it's an absurdly low chance but I'm sick and mostly watching tv so this gives me something to do with my hands on the side.

Screw that noise, man. Clone yourself some master balls. That's how I'm catching them.

No, shiny locking started in Gen 5 so you're good. Unfortunately I don't know of any way to improve your odds, like seed hunting or just a plain old shiny charm from later generations, so you're stuck with the abysmal 1/8192 chance of a random encounter.

Man, I just lost to a gym leader for the first time in this game. Morty was just too tough. More the annoyingly-high chances that sleep lasts more than 3 turns. And also lame how it's yet another gym leader i this game without the obvious new ghost type.

How important or how needed is Rock Smash for the entirety of the game? I'm at Burned Tower and I want to progress but I don't know if I should teach it to one of my Pokémon that will stay in the party for the entire game or to the two (maybe three) Pokémon that may get replaced.

The three are Jigglypuff, Togepi, and Flaaffy. At least one for sure is getting replaced by Ho-Oh in the future.

What the fuck is this true? That's fucking terrible. No sending up Pokémon in cool Kurt Balls then?

It isn't required for progress, hence why its a TM. There will be a couple of occasions where you'll want it, but you can just pull a Pokemon that knows it out of the box for that minute or two.

It doesn't matter who you teach it to, either. Like Headbutt, once you get it in the course of your adventure you can buy as many as you like at the Goldenrod Department Store.

It's not. I think there are a few items hidden behind rock smash in Mt. Mortar and Rock Tunnel and that's it. You also need it if you want to catch Shuckle.

Best HM slaves? Which two Pokémon can cover all the HMs plus the other overworld moves like Dig? Or would I need three slaves to cover all the moves?

I realize some of the moves aren't really needed but I would like to have them really just because lol.

The Bellsprout and Oddish lines learn Cut and Flash, and both are found early on.
Hoothoot/Noctowl learn Flash and Fly.
Furret learns Cut, Strength, and Surf. Also learns Dig.
Feraligatr learns Cut, Strength, Surf, and Whirlpool, and doesn't stand out as a Water type anyways, so he makes a suitable one. Also learns Dig and probably Rock Smash, not that that matters much.
Gyarados learns Surf, Strength, Whirlpool, and Waterfall. I always turn the Red Gyarados into an HM slave to get those last two HMs out of the way.

Mew is of course the real answer. Just use two of them and you've got everything covered! ;)

Not really, a guy on Cianwood gives you one for free (with Berry Juice) so you don't really *need* Rock Smash in Gen II outside of the occasional item

Lapras the GOAT wiped out all of Lance's Dragonites with OHKO ice beams. Even had a ten level difference for most of them. 2HKO'd everything else.

Rest of the Elite 4 was a bit of a wash, though. I didn't plan ahead for them and was vastly underleveled (Damn that Johto leveling drought).

I taught Rock Smash to my Ampharos and never really felt the need to overwrite it because its move pool is pretty shallow. I'm in Kanto now and its moveset is still Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, Rock Smash and Thunderwave. At least it gives it an option against Rock/Ground types.

The game didn't track balls until Gen 3

I wish they had created a new type of ball just for Pokémon sent from Gen 1 and 2 Virtual Console games.

Something like a Rusty Ball.
Description: "A ball so old and rusty that it's impossible to tell what it originally was. Seems to have been made in the good old times.

I guess it all depends on where your "this is cheating" line is. For me, just using a glitch to change a Pokemon takes the fun out of it, but at the same time, walking 5120 steps to hatch Gastly eggs is not exactly a blast. Thank you for passing this along though!

Got through the E4 with 3 pokemon (Ampharos, Slowbro, Nidoking) on their mid 40s fairly easy. One-shotted everything besides Muk, Umbreon and Houndoom iirc.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Not the best or even a balanced team at all but I've been enjoying it. At least one for sure is getting replaced by Ho-Oh in the future. Maybe Jigglypuff if Togepi or Togetic can learn Sing or Hypnosis.
