The PSN update system is a nuisance.

I feel exactly the same way about my Xbox One but I know that a large part of that is down to the fact that I rarely use it. That'll pretty much be the same on any system and it's easy enough to avoid by just turning the system on from time to time.

I'm in the Xbox Preview Program. I've never once seen the console update itself. It always seems to update automatically when I'm not around or using it.

I'm one of those people who likes to turn things off on the wall if I'm not using them to save the electricity.

Well I have both systems in automatic update mode, plugged in and sucking down electricity like no tomorrow... And only one of them actually keeps itself up-to-date automatically for me without me needing to wait through the installation process... And that's the Xbox One.

Maybe that's a sign I should just unplug the PS4 for good... (Or at least until Bloodborne 2 comes out...)

Yeah the dependence on PSN for a lot of things can be frustrating. If there's a PSN outage you can't connect to FFXIV, for instance. I don't get that one especially given the cross-play aspect

It seems like some of you think everyone uses rest mode.

I have been burned by it twice, so it's always annoying to update.

How have you been burned by rest mode? Rest mode is like the best part of this Gen. Auto updates and not Downloads, jumping right back into the game where you left off within seconds of hitting the power button.... Why would you turn off the console completely instead of using this feature?

Yeah it's a gigantic pain in the ass. Also, since the last update, my games have been "Copying" during the update process and it takes fucking forever. Anyone know what's going on there? It's happening to every single one of my updates.

FlyinJ

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Wait, is my console supposed to be auto-installing new system software? It only downloads it and then makes me install it manually.

Is there a setting to allow it to auto-install system updates while in rest mode?

Agree. I have to sit and watch the update install for at least 3min every 2 month.

This is just unbearable, I'm wasting my precious time, I could use that time to cure cancer or something. Sony plz

I had the opposite problem. My Xbox One never updated itself before I sold it.

The update files are, like, in the low hundreds of MBs. Assuming you're not still living in the age of 56K, that shouldn't take more than a few minutes to download even with the slowest modern connections. Go take a shit or make a sandwich or something.

And I don't think PS4 should be restarting multiple times when updating. Or not beyond two times, at least. It restarts when you start the OS firmware update and then once after it has installed, past that I don't think there should be any restarts unless something has gone wrong.

Not every firmware is even mandatory for PSN access and online play.

What exactly do you want them to do, release on a fixed schedule? Hold fixes that may prevent hard crashes in newly released games etc, just so the updates are more plannable?

If you're literally updating the OS every single time, you're using your PS4 at the most in 3-week intervals.

I can't leave it in restmode:

A. Because I only use it every now and then.
B. I've had it before where the PS4 was accidentally unplugged by someone whilst switched on.

What is the reason my PS4 can't update while I chat with my friends on PSN?

not really sony's fault that you don't use the console. for those of us that do, we have auto-updates turned on and it auto-updates...

LOL, outside the initial update after purchase of the PS4, the three bolded updates are the only ones that OP could have experienced. (unless they were in the Beta FW). You missed the 4.73 FW update FWIW.

this has happened to me:
turn on the tv, tv needs an update, turn ps4, update needed, start game..."would you like to start the game in offline mode while it downloads the update"
I thought it was funny, but it never bothered me, I just went to get a fresh drink, came back and everything was in order.

My hard drive has been corrupted twice while using rest mode.

The features are not worth losing my entire hard drive.

These complaints do not seem to be slowing down, if anything they are becoming more common. PS4 is a great console but I fear PSN’s many flaws will come back to bite them in a really bad way if they aren’t at least a bit proactive moving forward.

Let's talk about this because it's getting ridiculous. I don't play often, but every time I start up my Ps4 it prompts me to download a new update. Which is great. Because it means they're continuously improving the system, however:

1. You are unable to look at your friends list or interact with them in anyway.
2. You are unable to visit the PSN store.
3. You are unable to do anything which require any sort of dependence on PSN in any capacity.
4. The updates are never installed in the background, which means you are forced to restart your PS4, wait for it to update itself, then watch it restart again. This can happen several times depending on the update.

I'm getting frustrated at it because it doesn't seem to be intelligent enough to decouple the update system from your regular PS usage.

Is there anywhere we can provide feedback?
If you want to interact with your friends during a firmware update, you can use the Playstation app on your phone: Android | iOS

If you want to visit the PS Store, it can be done through the web: https://store.playstation.com

You can provide feedback here: https://share.blog.us.playstation.com/submit-an-idea

I dont think providing feedback for this will change anything though. They want you update the firmware. Usually firmware updates patches vulnerabilities related to hacking.

Some of these complaints are not exactly common, at least from my experience.

You know the PS4 only gets updates like every couple months, right?. It isn't like this is some every day thing.

Are you connected via ethernet? Because wifi on PS4 is fucking brutal for me.

I typically get 75-100mbps and all of my other devices in the same room download everything relatively fast...except my PS4 which crawls. When I do the connection test on the PS4 it's a good day when I clear 20mbps. It's such a piece of trash over wifi but that's kind of my fault for assuming a device released a handful of years ago would actually work reasonably well over a wireless network.

We're not talking about game downloads here, or even game updates. Which are massive in comparison. But PS4 console updates, which are usually quite small.

If you want to feel real update pain, turn on a network connected PS3 you haven't touched since you got a PS4 2 years ago.

Yup.

Compared to what the PS3 was like, the PS4 is lightning quick. I remember the real pain of trying to boot a game that had a shit load of updates. It was easier to just turn the console off at that point and do something else.....

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Yeah, pretty much. All I want to use my PS4 for these days is Netflix and HBO Go. I shouldn't have to bother with all these system updates that do nothing of value. I think the only time I've ever benefited from one of Sony's updates is the one on the PS3 that let me turn off trophy notifications. That was nice. That was also like half a decade ago.

What is the reason my PS4 can't update while I chat with my friends on PSN?

How do you expect the system to auto update if it is not on.

How do you expect the system to update itself if it needs a reboot, do you have a smart phone, are you able to use it when it installs a new update?

The exact same reason you can't use any computer for other functions while its performing an OS update.

This is just silly. I don't think you'll find a single device or platform in existence (be it PC, Xbox, ps, steam, uplay or origin) that lets you log in and browse and stuff while it's actually updating the system/client. Being able to do all that while downloading the update is one thing but how do you expect the system to function when those very functions and workings are being replaced, altered or rewritten?

If you are running across system updates 'everytime you turn it on' then you must be using your playstation really really infrequently.

thread title should be changed to System Updates are a nuisance as I don't see how PSN is really drastically different from others.

What do you know, I only ever turn the PS4 on every couple months when some PS+ free game looks good, or I feel like playing some SFV...
Honestly, I bought it for Bloodborne and ... ... Yeah other than that and SFV, the XOne has met/exceeded my every gaming need other than those two exclusives.

/Shrug

If I had more reasons to turn the PS4 on, I would. But I don't.

My guess is, rest mode eventually decides the PS4 has been abandoned after not being turned on for a month and just fully shuts down, meaning no auto-updates.

Hey this is me. Almost every time I want to play a new game I have to update first.

Also who keeps their Playstation in rest mode all the time? I got that thing where the console won't shut the fuck off in rest mode at all.

Mine is always in rest mode when I'm not using it. Gotta tell you though, it's silent.

You need to play more PS4, because system updates are (too) few and far between. And game updates/support are a GOOD thing. Use rest mode as it is originally intended for this.

Hands down my biggest frustration this gen is the amount of time it takes for system/game updates. I was gonna pick up FIFA the other night and then realized it'd probably be an hour or so AT LEAST before I can play between installing and downloading/installing patches.

I went to play Destiny the other night and had to wait fifteen minutes for the 5.0 update to download and by the time it installed I'd already gotten sucked into Stardew Valley on the Switch. At the very least let us have updates download and standby like they do on phones.

Stardew Valley on Switch will also receive future updates that will prevent you from playing as they download. Why bring that up?

Honestly do you want to go back to a time where games were shat out with little to no post release support?
