I'm in the Xbox Preview Program. I've never once seen the console update itself. It always seems to update automatically when I'm not around or using it.
I'm one of those people who likes to turn things off on the wall if I'm not using them to save the electricity.
It seems like some of you think everyone uses rest mode.
I have been burned by it twice, so it's always annoying to update.
Well I have both systems in automatic update mode, plugged in and sucking down electricity like no tomorrow... And only one of them actually keeps itself up-to-date automatically for me without me needing to wait through the installation process... And that's the Xbox One.
Maybe that's a sign I should just unplug the PS4 for good... (Or at least until Bloodborne 2 comes out...)
Rest mode takes away all these "concerns".

Not every firmware is even mandatory for PSN access and online play.
What exactly do you want them to do, release on a fixed schedule? Hold fixes that may prevent hard crashes in newly released games etc, just so the updates are more plannable?
If you're literally updating the OS every single time, you're using your PS4 at the most in 3-week intervals.
If you want to feel real update pain, turn on a network connected PS3 you haven't touched since you got a PS4 2 years ago.
How have you been burned by rest mode? Rest mode is like the best part of this Gen. Auto updates and not Downloads, jumping right back into the game where you left off within seconds of hitting the power button.... Why would you turn off the console completely instead of using this feature?
If you want to interact with your friends during a firmware update, you can use the Playstation app on your phone: Android | iOSLet's talk about this because it's getting ridiculous. I don't play often, but every time I start up my Ps4 it prompts me to download a new update. Which is great. Because it means they're continuously improving the system, however:
1. You are unable to look at your friends list or interact with them in anyway.
2. You are unable to visit the PSN store.
3. You are unable to do anything which require any sort of dependence on PSN in any capacity.
4. The updates are never installed in the background, which means you are forced to restart your PS4, wait for it to update itself, then watch it restart again. This can happen several times depending on the update.
I'm getting frustrated at it because it doesn't seem to be intelligent enough to decouple the update system from your regular PS usage.
Is there anywhere we can provide feedback?
Some of these complaints are not exactly common, at least from my experience. These complaints do not seem to be slowing down, if anything they are becoming more common. PS4 is a great console but I fear PSN's many flaws will come back to bite them in a really bad way if they aren't at least a bit proactive moving forward.
My hard drive has been corrupted twice while using rest mode.
The features are not worth losing my entire hard drive.
Yeah, thats a bummer. I wonder if you have a defective unit?
Install GT5 from retail disc.

What is the reason my PS4 can't update while I chat with my friends on PSN?
Are you connected via ethernet? Because wifi on PS4 is fucking brutal for me.
I typically get 75-100mbps and all of my other devices in the same room download everything relatively fast...except my PS4 which crawls. When I do the connection test on the PS4 it's a good day when I clear 20mbps. It's such a piece of trash over wifi but that's kind of my fault for assuming a device released a handful of years ago would actually work reasonably well over a wireless network.

I can't leave it in restmode:
A. Because I only use it every now and then.
B. I've had it before where the PS4 was accidentally unplugged by someone whilst switched on.
What is the reason my PS4 can't update while I chat with my friends on PSN?
Wait, is my console supposed to be auto-installing new system software? It only downloads it and then makes me install it manually.
Is there a setting to allow it to auto-install system updates while in rest mode?
The exact same reason you can't use any computer for other functions while its performing an OS update. What is the reason my PS4 can't update while I chat with my friends on PSN?
You know the PS4 only gets updates like every couple months, right?. It isn't like this is some every day thing.
What do you know, I only ever turn the PS4 on every couple months when some PS+ free game looks good, or I feel like playing some SFV...
Honestly, I bought it for Bloodborne and ... ... Yeah other than that and SFV, the XOne has met/exceeded my every gaming need other than those two exclusives.
/Shrug
If I had more reasons to turn the PS4 on, I would. But I don't.
My guess is, rest mode eventually decides the PS4 has been abandoned after not being turned on for a month and just fully shuts down, meaning no auto-updates.

Hey this is me. Almost every time I want to play a new game I have to update first.
Also who keeps their Playstation in rest mode all the time? I got that thing where the console won't shut the fuck off in rest mode at all.

Hands down my biggest frustration this gen is the amount of time it takes for system/game updates. I was gonna pick up FIFA the other night and then realized it'd probably be an hour or so AT LEAST before I can play between installing and downloading/installing patches.
I went to play Destiny the other night and had to wait fifteen minutes for the 5.0 update to download and by the time it installed I'd already gotten sucked into Stardew Valley on the Switch. At the very least let us have updates download and standby like they do on phones.
