Super Mario Odyssey - 10/10 from Edge

I remember during the Wii era, there was a long period of time when people asked "Where is Mario? Where is Zelda?"

2017, we have an amazing Zelda, and by all evidence provided so far, an amazing Mario.

Lol what? The Wii had a Zelda at launch, and a Mario in the first year just like Switch.

HERE WE GO!

OFF THE RAILS!

IT'S TIME TO RAISE OUR SALES

I can't wait for two months from now when people claim it was underwhelming after months of saying it was going to win game of the year, overrating its flaws while being wrong and actually being brilliant.

I can't wait for two months from now when people claim it was underwhelming after months of saying it was going to win game of the year while being wrong and actually being brilliant.

And the endless threads about how people that liked it are actually wrong. It's always like this.

future threads:

"Any kind of motion controls makes a game not fun. Period"

"getting the moons is busywork"

"[Gaming site that gave the game 10]: breaking down why super mario odyssey is overrated"

"LTTP: super mario odyssey (I thought knack 2 was better)"

If you go in to anything expecting "the greatest ever" you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. Some people no doubt will be underwhelmed or just feel the game doesn't deliver what they want, just like there are people who don't like SM64 or Galaxy.

^^^ You're also going have a bunch of posts explaining why a person is "wrong" for not liking the game.

Colin Moriarty: "there's no way mario odyssey deserves its X metacritic score, it just shows how there's a complete bias toward nintendo in this industry, also, asians in america show that racism doesn't exist"

That's an extremely bold statement, given that virtually nobody here has played two of those titles.

I could also make baseless statements about how Xenoblade 2 is going to be the most boring game released this year.

.

Not just bold, it's hilariously unrealistic. I thought he was joking when he said only few Sony sites will give Horizon GOTY months, but now I realize he is actually serious .

Xenoblade 2 is niche as fuck won't be a factor in GOTY awards from pretty much all sites just like the first two Xenoblade games.

Does this game need even remotely as many moons as there are korok seeds in BOTW?

probably depends on the individual. did zelda need as many korok seeds as it has? i might say no, but a lot of people probably love that there's a mind numbing amount to them. I'm far more interested in hunting moons than seeds so I'm ready son

Dont forget always some people wanting the previous game's style again as a detractor from the new one.

"After Super Mario Odyssey, I want Nintendo to try a 3D world/land style game again."

After a while, there were just too many dots on a map. Hopefully that isn't the case here.

I'm linking this when these are inevitably made.

Where was that guy who was calling that reviews would bash Odyssey because it lacked loot boxes? Where you at, bruh, is the line busy now?

And deservedly so.

It nailed a crapton of things right. A groundbreaking new Ip that openened doors and shattered barriers that stood in the way of female enpowerment.

Its also got the best story and gameplay in my opinion this year, by quite far.

It will be refreshing to see it win over another Mario and another Zelda. Whose both are established franchise that have been going on since more than 15 years.

Its important that Horizon wins as many GOTY as possible.
"Groundbreaking?" They took Ygritte from Game of Thrones and put her in a Zelda game.

You guys realize there never were 900 of the seeds so people could collect them all but because the world is so large that they need enough of them so people can upgrade enough of their inventory while exploiring without having to turn finding them into a grind?

It will probably win all the Playstation Magazine Gotys, but I hope that at least this year, gameplay focused games take the crown (Mario, Zelda and PUBG), and not the focus on graphics and story.

Lol... It's gonna be juicy

"they should have focused more on what made 64 great and not this open world gimmick stuff"

"literally one of the worst games I've ever played"

"literally unplayable"

Somehow gonna fit Horizon Zero dawn in there along with "no one i know plays this game or has a switch"

I don't even understand why people care so much about "GOTY". A game may be perfect, but if it isn't AAA million seller title it has 0 chances of winning GOTY awards.

Most of these are biased towards western game design too and the idea that they're the "Oscar of gaming" is sad. Maybe if the Academy starts giving awards to Transformers movies.

That GOTY talk hurts

"Odyssey will split the vote between Nintendo fans so Horizon will win" What the hell, this isn't politics. Hell the PS4-only vote will probably be split even further between first party fanboys, weebs, action weebs, souls weebs and sega weebs respectively. Also why even make that distinction that they are "Nintendo games", this is stupid. 20 years earlier, PS1 was selling a lot more and had a more varied library than the N64 but when Nintendo brought the goods, you didn't have random GOTY hot takes trying to belittle the impact of SM64/OOT. I know people have limited time and money but if you're remotely interested in this medium you ought to give those games are try even if they aren't on your platform of choice because the people with the means of playing everything that came out in 2017 did. The best game of 2017 is something that you didn't play/is only available on another platform? Okay, now it's on your radar. Done

Yes, goty discussions are stupid and shouldn't ever be considered something serious, just a thing that puts a game on your radar.

the only thing worse than the dick measuring contest that is these goty discussions is those that can't FATHOM how a game can be liked by others and has to tell you in every single situation how you are wrong for liking something.

Oh please, do you really need to go into pre-emptive defense mode?

Just celebrate what will almost certainly be a great game.

So you obviously played not many games this year ;)

Seriously, Horizon is a nice game, but a very streamlined blockbuster too, from gameplay to story. There are other much more important games for GotY-Awards. Calling BotW "another Zelda" is a bit weird, because BotW is very different from its predecessors. The courage to change an established franchise down to the core, is refreshing, and rare in this industry.

Yeah, I mean it's great to have more games about female empowerment and all, but the best gameplay this year?

It's arguably the open world that play the best out of all of them, zelda included.

The real miss of Horizon is the dialogue with npcs. Its rarely interesting and it feels horribly "forced" when the content of it is dramatic

The real hit is the enemy variety / combat / overall focused experience

I will celebrate, just that when zelda released, this behavior was exactly what happened and soured me on GAF for a while. No problem criticizing something of course.

But Horizon's world is static and boring, unlike Breath of the Wild.

It's also lacking the secrets and more in depth exploration of Witcher. Horizon's world feels like eye candy but lacking in actual substance.

I honestly don't see the point of Horizon's open world. It feels like an Ubisoft game at times.
