Easy Allies |OT3| "That sounds like the GameTrailers guy!"

Listening to the FT impressions on it right now and watching a bit of Ian streaming it before I'm srsly considering bumping Ys8 down and just getting this. The buzz for this divinity has just been getting stronger and stronger. I've even seen people get into it on my steam fl that never played a CRPG before.
2017 poses hard choices.
Really happy to hear that! Love it when people try out "new" things.

And for the loot box discussion once more, I liked the Frame Trap one way more. Great job Ben and the panel.

Do it. It's the best CRPG to jump in with.

Left it as a topic for L&R, but I hope they discuss EA shutting down Visceral, and how the Star Wars console publishing deal is looking, during the podcast.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 has been a pleasant surprise for me so far (as someone that didn't like the first one and hated the introduction). Larian really took some strides in writing better companions, quests and story beats to help engage with the player.

Ben's impressions sold the execution well; options are very broad, but within the scope of your character and engagement with the game they will narrow down quickly (in a good way). You will quickly decide whether you care to go through the steps to inquire a certain option or use what is at your disposal. The many opportunities you have to work with these, along with your companions' occasional banter makes this a notable title for exploration. I'm just about to reach Act 3 and it's easily been the most attractive of the cRPG resurgence bunch (ex. Pillars, Wasteland, Tyranny, etc.). It has been taking up a lot of my time.

My two largest gripes so far are that I wish your companions interjected on your choices mid/post-conversation more, as with other cRPGs. My character has done some questionable things that I'm surprised were never challenged or commented on. Secondly, the storage chest you have can't be auto-organized. A turn-off for me since I do store a number of things. I've run into a few bugs too, but mostly cosmetic.

I don't have much attachment to Star Wars. I don't dislike the original trilogy or newest movies
(except Rogue One...)
but I was never a huge fan. Still... it sucks to see EA basically say the type of games I like most (single player, linear, story based) is basically not worth making anymore. Not surprising, but a little depressing. I was looking forward to Space-Uncharted with laser-swords :(

I finally listened to the loot box discussion on Frame Trap and Ben made so many good points. I liked how he didn't let go of the issue and asked both Brad and Kyle some "tougher" questions. It was really good. Ben's talent to interview people really shines through. It's a shame that he can't write an article about it, because I think it would make a good thread.

The Shadow of War lootbox controversy was so overblown here on GAF that it was outright embarrassing that so many people were maliciously misinformed about how they were implemented in the game itself. So many right-wing scare tactics used that I was damned sure the next thing I was going to read is that they were using lootboxes to smuggle in Isis fighters to destroy your America-loving hometown.

Beat the game in the standard action-adventure gametime and wouldn't have even known about the damned things if it weren't for all the scare threads here. And you're still going to get those threads by people who haven't even come within a hundred miles of the game talking about how they heard you can't get past the first act without spending time in the marketplace (because that is how misinformation warps facts over time).

lol wat. If anything, the idea that lootboxes won't have any impact on the game design itself is some naive, corporation hugging trickle down economics bullshit. The entire idea is based on the laughable premise that corporations will keep the little person in mind, when in reality they're only interested in making even more money.

I don't know if that's fair, the segment name was clearly tongue in cheek. I just think they didn't have great ideas to fix loot boxes because... it's hard to fix loot boxes. Other than "no more loot boxes." Plus I get the impression they don't bother Jones as much as others and he kinda led the fixing discussion.

Yeah, it's one of the reasons why I'm happy Huber's reviewing AC Origins instead of Jones. Jones has some views I strongly disagree with.

It's immediately obvious that there is zero impact in Shadow of War. I'm not talking about loot boxes in general, but the implementation in Shadow of War alone.

Uh, what? Is this a drive by? It's always a shame when you try to have meaningful, well-reasoned discussion and it gets sprayed as "polite" or "overly cautious".

Fuck. That.

I could be totally wrong, but my guess is that post was about the Frame Trap game and how Kyle just asks people to shout out answers in his games and there is more regulation in Frame Trap. Brad flat out called it polite.

How many total gameplay hours did it take you to get the true ending without using a single microtransaction?

Maybe and I'm probably jumping to the wrong conclusions. A lot of things are very irritating at the moment.

I've seen some criticism of Easy Allies being too polite and it just always rubs me the wrong way. Like it's bad for a person to think before they speak or care about what they're saying. I think enough people scream angrily at cameras and although I do do that, I don't want it to just be that.

Those EA news and especially that statement, man. As someone who prefers single player games it's really depressing. You simply cannot trust this company to do good. You just can't. They're always going to fuck it up somehow. Fuck EA.

There's no such thing as too polite. And I liked Ben making the Allies wait before shouting out there answer, that way I can sort of play along at home, but that's not possible when someone just blurts out the answer before the question is done.
Also Ben, I really liked doing the Hot Take first this week! Doing the HT first and doing the questions at the end with game discussion in the middle makes for a nice flow.

With 0 smarmy, it must be hard to feel like the world's against you sometimes. A lot of back-of-the-head noise for sure.

Frame Trap's still my favorite EZA content (and anything Don is heading).

I for one am very happy with the fact that EZA is a more polite, thoughtful, and professional place to get gaming discussion from. All while still feeling completely genuine.

It drives me a bit crazy just as a viewer seeing the vitriol in youtube comments and other places of community discussion, so I can't imagine how frustrating it must feel to be one of the Allies and constantly receive this abhorrent behaviour directed at them.

Amen I love that EZA is one of the few places that tries to promote empathy even when it gets hard at least that's the sense I get in their answers to us/in general. I appreciate that a lot. Kudos to all of them and everyone that are/is just exposed to more of that stuff and still try their best.

Back-of-the head noise is a good way of phrasing it. I tend to really enjoy this thread because it's a lot less noisy than other places we've got, but a lot of times, especially today I'm overindulging in it. I'm becoming aggressive when there's really no need for it.

Then I'm just an idiot. Sorry.

Ben, I'll be honest, you see some perceived slight, then it seems like you get super angry or take it the wrong way.

Then the original post explains that it was something innocuous, and then you apologize.

I'm not trying to be mean, but it's something I think of when I think about your posts on here.

I kind of want an EZA editorial show. News desk. Random host. Semi weekly or monthly. Single take. Fire and brimstone from the heart.

Yeah, this is true.

Are you saying you want

A Final Bosman?
I said random host!

I think one of EZA's strengths is that they have a bunch of guys who can fill that role on (at least) a limited basis. Obviously Bosman is great at it, but just to throw out some names, I think Ian, Jones, Ben, and Huber are all clearly skilled enough behind the mic to do it as well.

I'm just spitballing here though, I know the allies are busy enough without me giving them random show ideas

E: autocorrect!!!!

That could be the spiciest hotake yet. Really well done by Ben and crew. I like seeing the discussion approach with more nuance than the usual discord I see on it regarding the topic. Which is either apathy or everything is evil. Like loot boxes themselves the topics can get real murky

And man that SW news suuuuuucks. Please free up the SW IP from EA. I miss Star Wars games I was interested in.

Are you saying you aren't excited for what Viscerals game will turn into?

It's okay. You are allowed to make an honest mistake. I think everyone gets the pressure you are under. By the way, great frametrap.

Roughly 35-40, most of that was actually spent mucking about in the beginning of the game before I could even dominate captains. Same amount of time I usually spend in any given open world game.

Frametrap spoilers

SOLARBEAM! had me crying, had to re-watch that a few times.
Kyle's mom doing his low-score bit is also extremely funny.

Great episode

Ben, you are the best and always well-reasoned. Don't let people bring you down, especially people who seem to be dicks if they have something against of being polite and thoughtful. You also can be critical and I love that, but even then you give time and consideration to that critique. That makes the criticism more valuable and worth to listen. So don't feel any pressure to act differently than you do, please.

Especially after this trametrap, I was reminded about how much Brad grew in the last year. He seems very confident in his review duties and he really did a great job on the retro.
I remember once in the gametrailers days when he literally walked away at kyle asking him to improv something. Now he gets in all the shenanigans.

Very much enjoyed Ben's microtransaction monologue on FT.

Increasingly, I feel like people in the media are so quick to take the publisher's side on things, and it's disheartening to see so many buy the PR hook, line and sinker.
