I really don't want this to come off the wrong way, but is NITW rewarding if you are no longer in the same boat as the protagonist? From everything I have heard, it totally nails the feeling of returning to your hometown, being down on your luck, unsure of your future, etc. I just feel like I was supposed to play it when I was in that situation, and returning to those feelings kinda puts me off on playing it to be totally honest.

Prey is the sleeper hit of the year
that seemed scary but i know it was more of a atmospheric scary. Still, I'll probably avoid it. Still haven't played Firewatch coz I don't wanna get spooped

I was joking for the most part but Gone Home had a stronger sense of "jump scare any minute" than Edith Finch so you're alright? Still though if you haven't played Firewatch because of the same reason then I don't know what to tell you since Firewatch is even more detached atmosphere wise than those two games.

well I guess now im DEFINITELY not playing it

For what it's worth, I don't think spoilers are a big thing with Edith Finch. There's no big twists or anything. I don't think that spoiler would hurt your experience.

It's really not scary at all. Like there's not even a spooky atmosphere IMO.

And just FYI, the guy who wrote Her Story described the game as "narrative WarioWare" and if that doesn't make you want to play it then nothing will!

Honestly.

You're not really meant to fully sympathise with the main character.

Im as far removed from her situation as possible and I still really enjoyed it.

Apologies again, I still think the game is worth playing.

It hits on those themes hard at times. I'm in the same situation, but there were enough fun moments with your friends to take your mind away from it. Mei's character has other problems than just that. Give it a try.

Well, don't force yourself to play something you don't want. But if you find yourself bored one day with no games to play, give any of the three games a try. I think Gone Home is the most fulfilling one overall than the other two games especially if you read through everything. Firewatch has a somewhat frustrating third act and Edith Finch while consistent just didn't resonate as much as Gone Home did. However, the stories that Edith Finch tells and how you interact with said stories are incredible and makes the entire thing very memorable. It is the bench mark for me when it comes to those kinds of games because it impressed the hell out of me.

Since we're talking about such games, I enjoyed Tacoma as well but not as much as I did Gone Home. It's a cold game overall but such is the nature of the beast since you're a stranger exploring an abandoned station so, you're kind of like a fly on the wall whereas Gone Home was a much warmer experience. It helps that it's set in a setting that's familiar to almost everyone. Home.

Is the payoff in Tacoma worth it in your opinion?

Not really, especially if you're into sci-fi like me then you're going to see it coming from a mile away. I do love the atmosphere though and the sense that you're a "fly on the wall" is neat and somewhat kind of creepy.

Interest piqued, I will add NITW to the list. Feel like that, PREY, and finishing Nier are the only things on my list that I need to do before GB's deliberations because they will be discussed/spoiled.

I had to double check if Tacoma really came out this year. Feel like that game just came and went with nobody really talking about it.

Same with Pyre

Pyres loop just wasn’t fun enough. I liked the actual matches. But the stuff in between often felt like checking things off a list

I loved Tacoma more than most I think

Pyre's good but I'm like half way through and have no desire to push through to the end. The structure of that game is too repetitive for me.

I feel like it was their best story but man it got repetitive. It needed another gameplay system in there to balance it out. It didn't help I played 90 percent of it in one day.

My main problem with Pyre was being forced to move ahead through the story and also there's no NG+. I dunno why did neglected to add that when Transistor had a really good NG+.

I'm sad that I'm going to miss this live. Fucking responsibilities.

Pyre is the best Supergiant game. The game part, while less prevalent than Bastion/Transistor is more fun, the characters are better and more fleshed out in the game itself, and I didn't need to go to an explanatory reddit post to feel fulfilled by the story.

I intentionally lost a very very key match in that game (I was 14-0 at the time) because I knew that it would branch the story in a way that would give me a really cool emotional payoff. That's not something I ever anticipated I'd do, because I'm one of those players that tries to get optimal runs on my first playthrough of games (Save everyone in Mass Effect 2, for example).

I did not have that situation (rather - I can relate to some of it but did not enter that exact situation) and loved the game so there’s that, I guess? It’s really special to me, but I can see it potentially being painful to revisit that time of your life if you lived through it.

I don’t really think Tacoma’s meant to be played for some sort of twist though? I really enjoyed how you gradually gained a sense of who everyone on the station was as well as what the world is like.

I love Wizard Markus

I enjoyed Pyre a lot but yea, I didn't fall in love with it like I did with Bastion.

Honestly, I still don’t get what people see in Bastion, especially because I’ve seen a lot of people who say they really liked it also say they didn’t get into Transistor?

I loved Transistor, and Pyre’s one of my favorite games ever now. But Bastion was just sorta ok to me. I never finished it when I first played it and when I restarted and finished it near Transistor’s release I did enjoy it but I wasn’t exactly blown away.

Didn't love Bastion, liked Transistor, LOVED Pyre. But I'm playing Outlast 2 and finding it really great and Persona 5 is my GOTY currently so opinions and stuff.

The strength of Super Giant's games is how diverse they are whilst keeping such a high level of production quality and audio. They're all some of the best examples of how OST, art, world building, and theme can enhance a game.

Couldn't agree more. Each is just so damn unique in atmosphere, music, lore and storytelling, all while feeling true to the SuperGiant identity.

The gameplay in Pyre just didn't hold up for me over the length of the game. The writing in it is their best work though, a big step up from Transistor which I kind of hated. Though I'd say Bastion is probably their all-around best game.

Was Pyre also isometric?

I think very highly of Persona 5. But my feelings are complicated because I feel like the plot kinda falls apart 2/3-3/4 of the way through and that really killed my enthusiasm for it.

You have to do the peanut butter first, because you spread the peanut butter on both pieces of bread to form insulating layers so your jam doesn't soak through and become gross

Pyre's strength is really in its final act. I think they took the criticisms of Transistor feeling rushed later on to heart.

Boy does Pyre end strong.

The last 3rd of the game just isn't very good. That combined with its insane length just left a sour taste in my mouth even if there was a lot about that game that I liked.
