Xbox to address multi platform games in spring, says former employee

MS is not abandoning Xbox hardware but in fact doubling down and making more and different ways to play
Honestly I think they should pull the plug if they put their games on other consoles. If I can buy all future xbox games on a PlayStation there is absolutely no need for t he xbox hardware to exist. And I’m saying that As an xbox gamer. I still have a reason to buy an xbox as long as I can’t play those games on other consoles. Should they decide to follow through they will have made up xbox gamers minds for them…. So who would be left to sell an xbox too?

I love their hardware but I’m starting to accept the idea that series X might be my last xbox.

Look at it this way, if Xbox is no longer competition for Sony, then we REALLY NEED Nintendo. Playstation without a competitor would be a disaster, so that would leave only Nintendo to compete with them.
They won’t compare directly with each other. And given that many buy multiple consoles they will only have two consoles to worry about anyway. As for Sony potential going unchecked and taking the piss with their further enhanced foot hold….. well….. it’s the juggernaut gamers created… so they just have to reap what they sow with that one…..

They won’t. Their survival depends on them not competing so directly with Sony, in that kind of AAA space. Nintendo are not suddenly gonna build a high powered machine to re- enter the graphics arms race they left back in the GC era. I dont see Nintendo ever putting out hardware that perform on par with a PlayStation of the same generation. Even switch 2 won’t have PS5/ series X levels of capability, that’s a given with Nintendo.

Only opportunities Nintendo likes is the ones where they are in their own Lane.
Nintendo has a history of driving in the left lane and the right lane. Nintendo will do whatever makes them the most money. They do not have to match Sony with console power. They just have to offer enough that prevents them from getting some third-party titles or performance being too poor. I hope they stay the course, after all, their handhelds are where they truly shine and I would like for them to continue with their hybrid approach.

Everytime I read something like this, doesnt that mean Sony will shoot themselves in the foot and its up to consumers to vote with their wallets?

If a company feels like they can do whatever they want, its up to us to let them know they cant.

A couple of people seem to think we will hear something more concrete tomorrow

How in depth that goes I have no clue
Can’t wait to hear the tired ”We hear you” speech. Maybe we’ll get a round table talk with Phil saying some sweet PR lies too just to please the fans. Then we’ll hear the Twitter super fans say everything is fine nothing to see here again. Exciting times.
🙄

I think the OEM route would be a mistake and would open the door to some unintended consequences MS may not want. They’d be smart to keep the hardware to themselves
It would be essentially Android with Xbox OS (app store) under Microsoft's control.

I think we hear a lot more about an Xbox branded handheld quite soon as well
They need a handheld with Sega branding for Asia :messenger_tears_of_joy: Will probably sell more than Xbox within a single month

Internet discourse isn't considered...

Okay, so they're not going to listen to their audience even if the general consensus is otherwise negative?

Gotta listen to your audience to some extent.

That sounds like back to normal for Xbox.

I will point out that the biggest "disaster" generation Sony had was when they were competing with Nintendo AND Xbox. Not only would they still have Nintendo in the console space, but even Sony has expressed concerns that the PC market can (and will) cannibalize their console market. People are also discounting that MS would be the largest third-party publisher (if this were to happen) and would still hold influence in the market. People like to blame Sony for $70 video games but it was 2K (I think) that started that. Most publishers, first and third parties, were ready to jump on that price point, which is why it happened.

I am more interested in who we hear it from.

You can't run a gaming business if you listen to a tiny minority, when the vast majority is ignoring your product.

Those being vocal about their love for Xbox are but a fart in the wind.
So ofcourse their reaction is not to be taken into consideration, because they're meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

OEM route is far better than abandoning hardware. If I could buy a console that had the Xbox system UI, Xbox Store, Gamepass and Steam it would be far, far better than what I have now. All digital with store competition to keep prices down. You'd also get PS games when they go to PC so I could stop buying that system. The only reason anyone would ever buy a PS at that point is if they are an extremely hardcore Sony fan. The other system would be far better, cheaper. If that is what their plan is, it wouldnt really matter what gets put on PS. The future after that would eventually be multi-store streaming boxes like a Roku or OEM multi store boxes if you want to play digital locally. But who knows. I'll just wait and see what happens.

They are in the situation they are in because they have listened to their "audience" too much.

How many times have we heard "Ill wait for _____ to come to GamePass" even with games that deserved their money.

HiFi Rush (their most critically acclaimed title) is coming to PS5.

Sea of Thieves (their most successful GAAS title) is coming to PS5.

Blade (their Marvel IP) looks like it's coming to PS5.

I bet you Forza Horizon 5 is coming to PS5 and Halo is coming to PS5.

Why? Because it 100% falls in line.

They didn't even put the ABK games on GamePass, when it only took them a few days after the Bethesda purchase to put 20+ games on GamePass.

It's starting to look (to me) like the played their fanbase like a fucking fiddle.

Be careful what you wish for.

If Gamepass did come to PlayStation platforms it would presumably be a limited version that only includes previously Xbox/PC-only titles. Third party non-MS titles that are already on or are already coming to PlayStation for individual sale would of course be conflicting.

As for future MS-published/owned titles coming to Gamepass at launch on PlayStation, that'd probably be unfavourable to Sony as they'd likely get more from individual sales royalties vs a cut of a small sub.

If they could make it work, it'd presumable be like EA Play. Or if they really wanted to add value, they could have it be an add-on to a required PS Plus sub. If it happens I think Sony hold a lot of leverage.

I think at best we see a "Game Pass Lite"; and perhaps there'll be a focus on bringing Xbox, 360 & X1-only titles from the past over. Maybe they could build a wrapper to run them on PS just like they do the BC on XS.

:messenger_hushed: :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy: Some of these comments to Sarah Bond's tweet are straight up insane..

They are fucking quiet on Phil but go straight to abusing background music. Phil fucked up for a decade so maybe send the abuse his way if you are that cowardly to begin with.
Someone got hurt real bad.

I feel for TimDogxxxxxxxx. I believe he is a sincere gamer. Only a real gamer would camp outside a Target and abuse people who bought Playstations. I'm glad Phil broke bread multiple times with such a positive role model for gaming. Classy dudes.

Glad that people are at least talking about this.

It would be awful if Phil and co. throws poor Sarah under the bus and make her announce this. It should be none other than Phil himself, who has been in charge of Xbox for nearly a decade now.
If there is any time for him to break out a new t-shirt....it's now.

Ban that useless cunt. Can you pre-emptively block a user before they make an account? I wouldn't wish him on the Ouya fanbase. All 14 of them are good people.

It wouldn't even be sustainable for MS to put 3rd party titles on GP if GP were to release on PS.

The costs they would have to make to cover loss in revenue from PS would be insane.

Yep. And now, as an Xbox gamer starting to see reality. Tell us how you think Xbox have handled this?

I thought all of gaf had pcs...my heads in a whirlwind right now at all this port begging.

Are everyone liers, including Phil?

Anyway, hopefully Microsoft are clear in their statement about this and they stay true to their words for a few years.

I personally think they will test the waters like sony have been doing with pc, to see how late porta perform. Then once they have the numbers they will make a defining decision.
Whenever there's a hint of a MS first party game going to another system, usually Switch, they come out port begging despite not wanting/needing an Xbox because they've all got PCs with 4090s in them 🤡

Are you daft!? Lmao Minecraft has been on everything since Microsoft acquired them and every update has been everywhere same with eso and fallout 76. They specifically changed Indiana jones to just Xbox and canned the ps5 version according to the court documents. Using Minecraft is just facetious. They also could have let Sony put those games in their most recent direct or the press release after the direct. Stop reaching .

Yeah.....Minecraft is on everything and yet STILL Microsoft didn't talk about the game being on PlayStation during last year's direct. You still don't get it, do you?

From Jez’s Twitter post.

“Microsoft has essentially decided they aren't going to make enough money with the current strategy.”

From someone who has zero real experience of running a business even I could have told you this probably at minimum 2 years ago. Gamepass was never making enough money without raising the price substantially in which case you would push people away. Subscription services are just not viable long term for games, that’s the truth.
