physical games are dead, long live physical games

Major game releases will not even fit on a disk.. having a disk does not mean you have a playable game..you're actually better off with a purchase from GOG where you can download the installer, and download the patches and keep them backed up.

Just saw these new PS5 listings for RE2, RE3, and RE7 at my local specialist retailer. I did wonder why Capcom never did a physical re-release of these games, considering how popular they still are and the fact that they already received digital PS5 versions quite a while ago.

I'm also slightly annoyed as I bought the PS4 physical version of RE3 just last month.
Welp, I tweeted about this, and it kind of blew up with people starting to mention @Capcom in their quote tweets, etc. 🙃

I hope my local game retailer doesn't get into trouble, and neither the European distributor which provided them with the info about these upcoming RE PS5 releases. 😅

Via Gematsu:

Publisher One or EIGHT and developer Team EARTH WARS will release physical standard and Deluxe editions of LOST EPIC for PlayStation 5 and Switch on August 8 in Japan, the companies announced.

The standard edition will be priced at 3,828 yen, while the Deluxe Edition will be priced at 9,680 yen. The latter will include a copy of the game, an outer case featuring a new illustration by Namie, the original soundtrack CD, an 100-page art book, and an acrylic stand

It looks like a Czech video game retailer from which I sometimes buy my games from has the PS5 version of Still Wakes the Deep up for pre-order for €35.

Edit: Now I see that it's up on Amazon as well but only on the European stores.

Pretty excited about this one since it's from the devs who made Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Death Esther, two of my favorite narrative adventures (walking sims) to date. They also did Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, but I haven't played that one yet.

It is insane because I've got new ps4 copies re2 and 3 and look at that... they reprinted the damn boxes. so close. Well at least I got both versions now... ps5 does require you to have the ps4 disc in there though

Yep, for these PS4 versions they just updated the box art to include the mention of the free PS5 upgrade (my RE2 and RE3 copies are the same since I bought them in the past year).

They probably move a considerable number of these copies still at retail so it's worth it for them to do a proper PS5 physical release to increase sales even more. :p

Will probably double dip though once they get a release since I'd like to have the native PS5 versions (hopefully with all the DLC on disc) in my collection. :)

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I'm still so incredibly salty that the physical copy of Chained Echoes that I bought (and paid for upfront) in 2022 still hasn't released.

I keep putting off playing the game because I want to play it on a cartridge, but at this point I might as well consider the dream dead, as the production company keeps pushing back the target date.

Just got my sealed copy of Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena from Canada. I'm going to let my 11 year old open it up and play it, and THEN I'm going to tell him these games are the reason why I'm a little psyched for the Indiana Jones game.

so you are just going to ruin indiana jones for him? :p
That company is nothing lie it was in riddick and the darkness days

People wont realize what we are losing/what we have lost till it happens. I expect some level of outrage when it eventually clicks.
It’s tough to make this argument sound convincing when all it takes is to look across the pond and see that PC gamers have managed very well without physical media for almost 3 generations at this point.

Situation on PC is different. There is actually competition, you can buy keys on multiple stores, GoG and most of Steam games (easily cracked unless Denuvo and even then) can be backed up.

And there are even more reasons but I don’t feel like typing them out. Console gardens are closed and locked in comparison.

Pleasantly surprised to see that Chants of Sennaar will be getting a physical release for the Nintendo Switch this summer (it's up for pre-order on VGP - $49.99 / 36.99 USD). Will most def snag it as soon as it shows up at European retailers.

Here's some new physical releases that were announced in the past week and caught my eye:

1. Rogue Legacy 2 for Switch and PS5 (this physical release is being handled by LRG - https://limitedrungames.com/collections/rogue-legacy-2)

GMG65HbWwAAax9N

2. Kingdom Come II PS5 and XSX versions were listed across various retailers in Europe and in the US as well (this confirms that it will receive a physical release day one alongside the digital version).

3. GINKA for Nintendo Switch - PlayAsia has both the standard and limited edition (they're the Asian Multi-Language versions). Release date is September 19, 2024.

The only way to make physical mean something again to me is to use big ass snes/genesis carts again with mappable hardware with a rewritable section of rom just so updates would last forever.

This will never happen for a ton of reasons but mainly the cost of manufacturing.

Here is another one, still sealed waiting for proper moment.
I was looking for XSX version but couldn't find it for some reason (only digital codes etc)
$25 including shipping.

So there will be no Rest For The Wicked physical, that is actually bad news.
Wait, no. It will receive a physical release, at least that's what the CEO said there in the tweet I've linked. :p

There's an XSX listing for Teardown that's still up on amazon.de. That said, I think the PS5 version is not that bad either especially as it has a pretty okay dualsense implementation from what I heard.
