Yui is the best K-ON! character
Welcome to the NHK is crap, but it had good music
Gundam, all of it, is boring
Mazinger Z > UFO Robot Grendizer

You are an evil evil man.

Grendizer is Nagi's best work and his most bad ass pilot. Sadly side characters are shit.

I haven't even seen Turn A Gundam but I've heard very good things and can accept that it was the last good Gundam show.

In fact, fuck it. I was thinking of watching a mecha anime and that is what I'm going to watch.

edit: It's a shame about Gundam X. Not many people would have watched it and it did have one of the better romances in a Gundam series (the best being in G Gundam although I heard 08th MS Team might top it)

This thread reminds me that I never actually finished Cowboy Bebop after a friend spoiled the ending for me after I missed the last few episodes during its original run on Adult Swim.

I think that Cowboy Bebop may be the only real time I've had an anime ruined for me by it's fan base.

I went into it years after it came out with everyone saying how amazing it was. While I really liked Jet, I just didn't think it was that good and both Spike and Valentine where way over hyped.

At least Trigun lived up to the hype.

You should get to it. I went in knowing how the show ends and the last ep still blew me away.

Haha man, I have not met a single person who didn't already know the ending of Bebop before they watched it.

I was spoiled about it back in the early 00s and its still my favorite show.

There are a number of reasons why I believe that, but the primary one is that anime has music while written material does not. Music adds an unbelievable amount to the experience that I can forgive a lot of the areas where an anime might have to cut corners to adapt a source material. What's gained is greater than what's lost.

A good percentage of manga adaptations change the actual story/events and characterisations for the worse.

I don't know how 'controversial' it is but the Trigun manga >>>>>>>> The TV series, in my opinion.

also based on the first 3 episodes, last year Nichijou > this year's Nichijou (it's still one of the better shows of this season though).

Especially when the anime overtakes the manga and has to create new storylines. FMA is an example of a show that did this well (IMO), but Hellsing and Rurouni Kenshin come to mind as a couple that passed their manga's and never recovered.

Here a controversial opinion: Gantz is godawful shit and the process of watching it was excruciating.

If you're looking for Haibane Renmei with tangible external conflict, watch Gunslinger Girl.

(If you're looking for Haibane Renmei for retards, watch Angel Beats.)

I've seen Gunslinger Girl, and I do remember liking it. I think I'll stay away from Angel Beats :p

People could actually tell wtf was going on in that manga? I will say that the manga had some scenes not in the anime which were fucking AMAZING.

WOLFWOOD!

vvvv -
Loved the Knives plot in the Manga so much more then the anime which fell apart in the last few episodes to me.

I dunno man I loved the ending for the anime. The way he just takes Knives back was so badass and touching.

I would agree with the Manga.

However the Death scene was amazing in both.

I haven't liked most of the slice of life anime I've watched. In fact, I've found most of it to be the most atrocious piece of trash ever and a complete waste of time.

I love how the fastest moving anime threads are the ones where people shit on anime lol.

My opinion: K-ON! > Evangelion

People love to bitch (myself included).

Here's an old argument that some IRC/newsgroup goer's might remember (and also my opinion):

Robotech is better than Macross. Macross is so damned corny at times that I wanted to throw myself off a bridge to avoid having to watch culture
defeat the Zentradi, who just couldn't fucking handle the singing of Minmay
.

I'm enjoying Gundam Age. The generational concept is cool. Everyone hates it.

-_-

This is why they keep making crap like Gundam Age.

I'll join the RahXephon > Evangelion camp.

Naruto himself is actually a pretty great character, at least pre-Shippuuden. He just gets shafted by constantly playing second banana to significantly worse characters. (It doesn't help that his series has gotten worse and worse over time.)

Bleach's Soul Society Arc is one of the best shounen fighting manga arcs ever. The rest of the series is tripe, and apparently the big twist in that arc is the only great idea Kubo has had for the series. Well...I guess this isn't really a terribly controversial opinion.

Kamina is overrated. Simon is the superior badass.

Death Note is one of the better comedy series of the past decade. It is a comedy series, right?

People seem to forget just how many utterly terrible episodes were in the first half of the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime series.

Fantastic Children is quite possibly the most underrated/underwatched series of the past 10 years.

The first Ghost in the Shell movie has no real plot to speak of until about 15 minutes before the end credits roll. The justification for its popularity at the time must have been "it looks like the main chick is naked all the time!" because it otherwise has no real redeeming qualities. The second Ghost in the Shell movie has a ridiculous amount of psychobabble, even by anime and GITS standards, coming out of the mouths of people who are supposed to be law enforcement officers. Apparently Section 9 only hires philosophy professors. On the flip side, the Stand Alone Complex TV series is fantastic and strikes a perfect balance between the franchise's penchant for philosophical musings and good old fashioned action.

Durarara!! has a more interesting cast overall than Baccano!

Endless Eight was entertaining to watch, particularly as a kind of social experiment.

Nobody in Scryed is "manly."

Akira is a terrible film with great animation.

Kiki's Delivery Service would be great if it was the first 3 episodes of a 26 episode series but is completely lackluster as a stand alone movie.

Always thought Macross was complete trash. It's just so god damn silly and it takes itself so seriously.

I agree, most of them just don't really appeal to me. I liked Usagi Drop though I'll admit.

Only watchable parts of DBZ are the small character centered pieces (going to school etc), actual fights and mainplot are crap.

Magical Project S is the best thing to come out of the Tenchiverse, and an underappreciated classic in the magical girl genre.

I don't know if it's controversial anymore, but: Ninja Scroll sucks.

Fushigi Yuugi was a really good show (TV series; massive diminishing returns as you go through the various OAV releases.)

Chibiusa > Usagi

Ping Pong Club > Cromartie

What don't you like about it?

I'm guessing it's the fact that some of the main characters are children?

Even despite that, the tone of the series is still quite serious, and the narrative is entertaining me. I don't see how it's considered a bad series when it's supported by an intriguing concept of having a new protagonist for every generation. To me, that's refreshing for a Gundam series.

So I saw the "controversial opinions" thread in the gaming section and I was about to post when I realized that most of my "controversial" opinions about games have at least some vocal minority of backers. Some of my less mainstream opinions about anime, however, are seemingly mine and mine alone. So I thought I'd start this thread for animu fans to vent their unpopular opinions about animu, and maybe find out if other people have unpopular opinions as well, and in that case these people can rejoice and be hipsters together. So, without further ado...

The Cowboy Bebop dub is good, but way overrated. Steve Blum and Wendee Lee (and whoever the hell played Jet) can't emote for shit.

For that matter, Cowboy Bebop itself is 50% overrated - by which I mean that roughly half the episodes are bland, formulaic, and utterly disposable. The other half are phenomenal and completely deserving of the hype. Since the last few episodes are among these, people tend to look back and remember only the good parts, and thus get it into their head that Cowboy Bebop is perfect. Which it's not.

The first Fullmetal Alchemist anime - an excellent, if flawed series in its own right - is way, way better than Brotherhood - an uninspired, watered-down, mind-numbingly literal adaptation of the manga with way worse music, direction, dialogue, voice acting and characterization.

Rebuild of Evangelion is to Evangelion as the Star Wars prequel trilogy is to Star Wars.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is better than the original movie.

The dubs of FLCL, Trigun and Rurouni Kenshin are unwatchable.

I love the dub for Evangelion, even though it is kinda hokey and the show is kinda not.

I find most Miyazaki movies boring and most Kon films leave me cold.

Yoko Kanno is not my favorite anime composer, and much of her post-90s stuff is unremarkable.

Naruto is one of the better shonen series and I'll take it over Bleach, One Piece or Dragon Ball any day.

Kenji Kamiyama is a hugely overhyped director whose shows are stilted, excessively talky, poorly paced, and utterly devoid of believable human sentiment.

Misc. overrated series (in order from least to most overrated): Haibane Renmei, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Darker Than Black, Baccano, Monster, Elfen Lied, anything by Kyoto Animation.

All I can think of for now. More to come. Probably.

I....I cant...resist...

"Slice of life" covers a pretty wide variety of genres, perhaps you just haven't been watching the right shows. Do you have some examples? As someone mentioned though, Usagi Drop is an example of a good slice of life type show, so try that out.

The animation, the refocusing of the series on children, etc. For what it's worth, I didn't like Seed/Destiny/etc either.

The age of the characters has little to do with my dislike for it. I love War in the Pocket (0080) despite it having a child protagonist.
