Just traded in my Old 60gb PS3 (won a new slim a few months ago) for a 3DS with Mario Land 3D.
Whats the best RPGs i can get on this thing?

There's Devil Survivor Overclocked, a DS port with added features. It's a complex strategy-hybrid RPG. I don't know much about it. It might be hard to find at this point being an Atlus game.

Otherwise there's Tales of the Abyss coming to NA in February (already out but hard to find in EU) which is a straight PS2 port. It's a traditional RPG with a realtime battle system that controls kind of like Smash Bros. I really recommend it.

As for upcoming RPGs, off the top of my head there are Paper Mario, Beyond the Labyrinth, Kingdom Hearts, Fire Emblem, and Monster Hunter 3G (if that counts?), all of which should be 2012.

i can't wait for paper mario, final fantasy: bravery default, fire emblem, and kingdom hearts! all those games look fantastic and i'm hoping the 3ds will keep rpgs coming after those are released.

gonna give Persona a shot, as for DS back catalog... Phantom Hourglass or Spirit tracks?

I think most of GAF considers Spirit Tracks the better game, and I agree.

Don't forget to pick up the free Zelda game on the eShop. It's only free until February.

Sweet thanks!!
This is my first nintendo system since the Cube so im pretty excited about it :D

I've never played Cave Story before and I received the 3D version as a gift. Started playing it and I'm having a blast. The game has a lot of charm.

It's definately a great little game...

I'm really impressed with the system and how many great games are out before the system has reached a year on the market..

I currently have 7 games, for it probably I think this is the fastest hand held console ive had in a long while for acquiring quality titles in the first year

I just got my 3DS today with Super Mario 3D Land. Damn the game is amazing GAF. I'm a little concerned at how short it appears to be compared to the Galaxy games but that's probably because I'm enjoying it so much.

I'd kill for a 3D remake of Mario 64 but I don't know how likely that is considering that it has already been re-released for the DS.

I tried RE Revelavtions and was impressed by how good it looked for a title this early into the 3DS lifecycle. It's a shame they went with a Silent Hill style aesthetic for the enemies though. I was hoping for more of a standard zombie-fest.

If anyones short on numbers in their friends list, feel free to add me (0473-8507-2924). Just PM me with your FC so that I can do the same

Seeing BD is just dated 2012 in Japan, I'll go on a limb here and say Spring 2013 at the earliest.

As for a new Zelda, yeah they're working on it, prolly holiday 2013 or something.

And yeah 3DS is full backwards compatible.

DS has probably the best diversity and library from nintendo since the SNES.

Thankfully Nintendo kept the tradition with their hardware and the 3ds is backwards compatible

Yea, the DS actually has the finest library of software on any gaming device ever (PC excluded), especially for fans of platformers, puzzle games, and rpgs. Anyone with a 3DS who never owned a DS has a ridiculous amount of amazingness waiting

Just given WWE Allstars a go after my Amazon order came through (£10).

First impressions aren't fantastic, really. I was a big fan of the console version but the 3DS version is a little rough around the edges and the general pace and FPS of the game seems "off" to me. As console to handheld ports go it's actually not bad, all things considered, but still a little disappointing nonetheless.

Not a big fan of trading games but may see if I can get more for it than I paid and use the proceeds towards Revelations and the CCP..

Personally I thought it was fantastic. It's probably the best portable WWE game ever too...

Having played some more WWE All-Stars...it's average at best. Granted, I can't think of any other handheld WWE game that I liked better. I'll keep at it though by trying to unlock all of the characters and maybe their outfits. The latter will take forever, though. :/

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games demo is up on the eShop. Just downloaded and went through the events twice. The demo has five events: 25MM Rapid Fire Pistol (kinda fun), Football (Soccer...better than I expected), Trampoline (didn't care for it), 100m Backstroke (didn't care for it although this was the only one that required the stylus) and BMX (decent). Overall, it was rather underwhelming. I was set to purchase this game next month but now I'm having second thoughts. Maybe I'll wait to see if I can get it for $25 or less. Also, like the demo for Resident Evil: Revelations, it has a 30 count play limit.

I've also begun to play my GBA Ambassador games. I finished Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones just last week and it was entertaining from beginning 'til end. I had never played a game in the Fire Emblem series before so this will get me to start playing the others when I make time. Earlier today, I completed Wario Ware, Inc.: Mega Microgames. That, too, was my first time playing anything in the Wario Ware series. That game kept me on the edge of my seat; I dread the three seconds I have to figure out what I'm doing. *laughs* Short but sweet. I'm not sure which game I'll start playing next but I should probably finish the other grand prixs in Ridge Racer 3D that I've neglected for months.

And even i am moderately surprised
I picked up Zoo Keeper 3D yesterday - not expecting anything other than good old Zoo Keeper out of it and just hope "Hitler Boss" mode is still in there.

Like I say, there wasn't anything particularly "wrong" with the game as such. It just felt ever so slightly slower and more clunky than the console version, and the visuals were reasonably disappointing. If I hadn't already played the console version I think I would have enjoyed this more.

Anyone pick up a Circle Pad Pro? Just tried to play it with Mario Kart. I know the game doesn't technically support it, but tried to see if I could still play the game normally with the extra grip. I couldn't, due to the button placement restrictions on the 3DS itself, but I wish MK supported the CPP. The game felt really comfortable with the extra support and I'd love to use the triggers for power ups and drifting rather than the shoulder buttons.

I haven't picked one up yet (won't be released until 2/7/12 here in the US) but I'm trying to figure out how I'll be using it. I currently have the Nyko Powerpak+ installed on my 3DS...maybe I'll end up switching it back and forth just to use the Circle Pad Pro on the games that are compatible with it that I'll be playing in the next few months (Resident Evil: Revelations, MGS: Snake Eater 3D and Kid Icarus: Uprising). Speaking of MGS: Snake Eater 3D, there's now a $10 promotional credit toward a future purchase at Amazon if bought from there. Get on it!

Luckily for me, I locked in for a price of $34.99 back when preorders were taken at Amazon over a year ago.

Also, the US is getting 3D Classics: Kid Icarus by way of preorders of Kid Icarus: Uprising as well (through Amazon, not sure if other retailers will do the same): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002I0EMBI/?tag=neogaf0e-20

For 3DS RPGs, so far confirmed for western release there's only:

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
Tales of the Abyss
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Paper Mario 3
Dragon Crystal (Virtual Console)
Zelda II: The Adventure if Link (Virtual Console)
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (Virtual Console, Ambassadors only)

Though I'd say it's likely we'll also see:

Fire Emblem Awakening
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy
Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D
Fantasy Life
Inazuma Eleven Go
Crimson Shroud (Guild01)
Rune Factory 4
Beyond the Labyrinth
Dot Eater: New PicDun (eShop)
The Sword of Hope (Virtual Console)

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
NGamer rated MGS3 93% and it's the 2nd best score they gave to a 3DS game since launch. Looks like the final build is pretty awesome :)

I'm on the fence about Tekken 3D. I prefer VF and it seems unlikely that anything other than TTT is going to really get any serious attention. That might actually be a good thing since I would get beasted on a little less often. I am pretty keen on seeing Bloodline rebellion as well.

I so want MGS3 to be good. I really hope they polished everything and that the framerate got sorted out.

I'm pretty happy with my library so far and I'm still missing Shinobi, Ace Combat, and 3D land.

There's pretty much no RPGs yet. It sucks :(

I just ordered Mario and Luigi: BIS from Walmart for $15 though, hope it's good!

Thought I'd share some thoughts on Beyond the Labyrinth while I'm waiting for my 3DS to charge.

I've said it before, but I think the game could be very divisive. One reason is the battle system - I think like much with Resonance of Fate, the unusual battle system could be a turn-off for a lot of players.

It's pretty complicated, though to its credit, the game does a great job of easing you into it. Basically, you have a team of four party members, and each member can be one of three alignments: rock (red), scissors (green) and paper (blue). If you hit the weak point of an enemy, the damage you do gets put into a reserve. The next player or enemy to attack who is of the same alignment as that HP gets healed by that amount. For example:
1. Red player attacks green enemy for 200 damage
2. 200 HP worth of green HP enters the reserve
3. Green player attacks any enemy
4. Green player gets healed by 200

This makes turn order very important. You can adjust the strength of your attack, and as you progress in the game, you can boost the range by which you can adjust your attack strength. The stronger your attack, the longer it is before your next turn rolls around. As a result, it's no good blasting an enemies' weak point if their turn is going to come up before you can grab the HP you've knocked off. For example:
1. Red player attacks green enemy for 200 damage
2. 200 green HP enters the reserve
3. Blue player attacks green enemy for whatever damage
4. Green enemy's turn comes up
5. Green enemy attacks and heals itself by 200 HP

Once you get the hang of it, working out strategies is very satisfying. This is just the foundation of the battle system, however. So far I've run into enemies who have special traits, for example one who changes alignment when you hit its weak point. (If you think about it, they're great for getting easy heals if you get them in isolation.)

In addition to your four aligned party members, you have the girl who you guide through the labyrinth. She has no alignment and her charge time is pretty slow, but her attacks are unique. Every time you attack and do damage, that damage is added to her magic gauge. On her turn, she attacks for that amount of damage. To make things more complicated, you can set your aligned characters to add to or multiply the value in her magic gauge when they attack. And there are enemies who can change whether your aligned characters add or multiply.

The other reason why it might be quite divisive is story-related. Big spoilers for the first hour of the game follow:
You start by playing an online RPG in the style of an 8-bit dungeon crawler. Three other players join your party as you wander the dungeon, chatting through the text chat function and fighting monsters, when you start hearing a girl crying out. Static fills the screen, and then the girl appears. The world has transformed from 8-bit throwback to lavish labyrinth, right down to the interface.
The girl can see you through what she calls "a window", and you can see her. However, sound is only one way, so she can't hear you, and she can't see the chat log either. You don't control the girl at all - she's entirely AI-controlled, and you move completely independently of her. She still talks to you, though, even though she can't reply, and your party continue to talk amongst themselves via the game's chat function. You don't really know much about your party at all, though you get to know their personalities through the way they talk. The first person to join is Pokira, who's thoughtful, polite and bit of a geek. The next person to join is Nerikeshi ("kneaded eraser") who is very blunt and straight forward. The fourth person to join is LiLy, who is nice and friendly.

Not much else to add for now except that the presentation is fantastic. The labyrinth is beautiful, and the design of the enemies really makes them feel like they're a part of that world. The soundtrack is by Motoi Sakuraba's, and thankfully it's not one of his boring soundtracks. Aside from the odd appearance by the unmistakable Sakuraba bell, it doesn't sound much like anything I've heard from him before, although Lilac Mist reminds me a little bit of Star Ocean 2 for some reason. Here's a few samples from Konami:
Lilac Mist
Cleave
Decayed edge
Premonition
It's definitely a headphones game, by the way.

Too bad no one bought the game. It seems like a one-of-a-kind to me.
Incidentally, I haven't got to the part where you can customise the girl's clothes yet, but I think the detail about customising the colour of her panties was falsely reported. You can see right on the cover of the game that she's wearing shorts under her dress, so you wouldn't even be able to see her underwear even if you tried. It's kind of a shame that there was such a big song and dance about it as well, because it makes it seem like a game for paedophiles when it's really not at all.

You just completely sold me on Beyond the Labyrinth.

Haven't read the spoilers but that battle system sounds to fun to pass up. I just hope it gets localized so I don't have to sacrifice a small goat to play it.

If they get GBA games on eShop then this will be the best handheld without a doubt.

GBA games on eShop, NDS games compatible, 3DS games.

Jeezus!

I know this isn't completely related to games themselves, but does anyone know of any great 3DS cases? I'm looking for something hard shelled or silicon! I've been eyeing this and this but I don't know!
