I've always wondered the average brick piece count for a Creator item. I always thought they're low (around roughly 200) but then I saw someone post a pic and noticed it said 1000~.

you're giving me cold feet on the TIE fighter. Need some of you to post nice pics up to persuade me to get it. I could always put my VIP points towards the Dino rescue set that my daughter wants for her birthday I guess, but the TIE seems a great companion for the X-wing

The Tie Fighter might not be nearly as fun a build as the X-Wing but it does look nice, and is a a perfect companion piece for the X-Wing.

Just finished the X-wing, it was really good. It has some really cool parts to it. Picked up the Toy Story Pizza Planet truck along with a stand alone Woody minifig also. I think I've decided to pick up the Shuttle Expedition next due to the recommendations.

That Auto Chassis set you have a pic of here was my holy grail in Lego as a kid. I never got it. I drooled over the box whenever I went to Toys R Us. My three biggest pieces of pride as a kid were:

I am getting bodied by the imperial shuttle. It might have been a bad idea to start with instruction book #1, which is building the cockpit and body of the shuttle. So many gears and complicated pieces, it's surprisingly complex for someone who hasn't played with Lego since I was 8.

I finished but it took me awhile, time to move on to book #2. I am very afraid I messed something up with book #1 because I can't move the gears, which I am assuming control the movement of the wings. But I'll keep moving forward for now.

My brother-in-law got me one of the Architecture sets (Rockefeller Center) as a gift and the Lego bug's come back, hard. I made the trip down to one of the nearby Lego shops and was about to put down cash for the WV camper but my wife then caught sight of the Harry Potter Diagon Alley set and she HAD to have it, soooo....

I'll save the van for a later purchase, and the wife and I'll be building the DA set together.

I like the Queen, thought it was a fun build I really like how it looks when done.
Lego put some nice touches in with it like the lamp and captains room.

I just went through 2 of my orders from Brinklink tonight. So much stuff now! Just need
the other 2 and the order from lego.shop to come and I can get started on my mid-evil
scene!

Pretty cool design with the midi scale Star Destroyer.

You start off building the spine of the ship by connecting two girders, like this:

The connection point is a hinge, so once you complete the spine you actually fold it in half, which forms the basis of the star destroyer's wedge shape.

That looks pretty good... but it's in an akward place between two stools.

It sacrifices much of the blocky aesthetic that makes these block toys what they are... but nonetheless still has some studs and unusual panel lines.

Like... if I wanted something that looks really accurate, the first and obvious choice would be to go for a die cast model (typically 1/18 scale).

OTOH... I don't like that lego Ferrari either I'll stick with minifig or miniscale lego toys for their charming blocky proportions and lego block abstractions of real details.

I agree with everything else you said but the reason for choosing the 911 over a die-cast model was that you still get the joy of constructing the model. Of course, you can't make anything else unless you whip the wheels off and call it a house.

what do you think of the new VW Camper? Thats very smooth and could be considered 'un-lego' looking due to lack of visible studs. Same with the Imperial shuttle. I love both of them

And Lego has had its phases of using lots of custom pieces in the past (not as extreme as that porsche though)

That's a fair point. But there are plastic model kits as well in that case... even Snap fit kits which can fill that niche between construction and appearance better than the megabloks.

I love them... they definetly still maintain a strong lego aesthetic (which while the studs are a strong part of, aren't the only facet of, by a long shot).

The problem I suppose is when you start getting into the realm of custom multi plane geometry that couldn't be abstracted as anything else. Previous lego sets that did that sort of things like the Bellvue sets were kinda shite as well.

There's a line between a well designed lego set and a multi-part constructable toy that happens to have lego studs on them (which I feel devalues the unique appeal of LEGO)... and I think its very much upto the designer to recognize how and where not to cross the line there.

Pet Shop just arrived after scoring it cheap from Amazon!

Also spent last night sorting through both an old box of LEGO from when I was young, and a cheap set of old bricks from eBay. Turns out between them I've just about got enough to rebuild this:

Just have to buy a handful of blue 1 x 2 slopes from Bricklink to restore it.

This was the first LEGO set I was ever given (as a six or seven year old) so the little boy in me cannot wait to get all the relevant bits together.

The grown up me, however, can't wait to get cracking on that Pet Shop tonight...

(And news of the Double Points promotion means I might cave and get the long-admired LEGO Death Star next month...)

Agreed. Actually I think that's one reason I'm loving the new sets, there seems to be a renaissance of using standard pieces in innovative ways which I really like. VW camper and modular buildings are great examples

Yup. I'm a massive hypocrite in a way. Although I love that MegaBlocks 911 and wish they'd make more (the £10 models are fucking awesome too), when it comes to 'proper' LEGO I want to see bricks and studs, not custom parts. That's why I bought the 430 rather than the one of the bigger (but dodgier looking) Ferrari's.

I couldn't stand that Technics phase of using pipes for bodywork.

I thought it would be fun to watch a competitive build of some LEGO sets, BUT NO! Now I appear to have been infected with the highly contagious LEGO bug. D:


My problem is that there are very few sets out now that I want to get! I'm not really big into Star Wars anymore so there are very few sets that I want from there. I do find myself loving the little TIE Interceptor™ & Death Star™, but it's not going to be nearly enough to satisfy my LEGO craving.

I really like the idea of the Architecture sets, but there aren't that many that appeal to me other than the Rockefeller Center and Fallingwater ones. The LEGO site says that there's at least one new one coming in March, which I'm looking forward to seeing. I love the display aspect of these and I really am looking for sets that are a little classier than the majority of the sets out there.

Unfortunately for me is that the set the really caught my eye is the 8070 Supercar!
At $120 (if I can't find it at Walmart on sale) it's more money than I want to spend, but this thing seems to be exactly what I was looking for.
--It looks like it will be a fun, complicated build
--It has two different, great looking builds (
--The motorized aspect of it looks extremely cool.

I still have a motorized AT-AT from the Dark Side Developer's Kit from when I was a kid, but this looks cooler in every way.

I hope the LEGO store that's closest too me has one in stock (never been to a LEGO store before!), but if they don't I suppose I'll just order it off the online store.

Have you seen the old Mega Bloks McLaren Pit Stop sets?

They are pretty impressive in size and pieces for the money (can be found online for around £15 each) I think there's a 2007 and 2009 model, the older being a little chunkier but it's still nice imo. At least one of them has a wacky alternative build but no paper instructions for it, if it means pulling the stickers off I wouldn't bother.

Well, I just got an offer for an Imperial Flagship 10210.

New and sealed, $290 (don't compare this price to what you pay in the US, we pay a lot more for LEGO in Europe, or at least here in Switzerland).

So, should I get this one instead of the Queen Anne's Revenge or Black Pearl?

Imperial flagship is going up in price as its discontinued. I think its the biggest ship in the pirate 'fleet' and is the only one with two decks. Up to you - I think i'd be tempted. I mainly jumped on the Queen anne as it was discounted (and my daughter loves lego blackbeard)

A spot of googling should sort that for you. I think Peeron.com has most of them scanned in. I usually just put 'LEGO XXXX Manual PDF' where XXXX is the product number.

peeron is good for old stuff - it can be a git to navigate, so try brickset.com to search for the set, which can then direct you to the instructions on peeron. eg http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=6892-1

lego.com also has instructions in pdf but I don't know how far back they go.

Finally if you want printed instructions, you could try bricklink.com, but old stuff might be thin on the ground and/or expensive
