Bandai Visual has never applied any egregious filtering to their releases before, so I see no reason to believe they would start now.

So why hasn't Cowboy Bebop gotten the bluray treatment yet?

Same reason why Macross Plus and DYRL have not. They just haven't gotten around to it yet. Both Bebop and Escaflowne movies are on blu-ray, came out ages ago. They took their time with releasing Escaflowne TV on blu-ray, so they'll eventually do Bebop TV but they just haven't done it yet.

Wanting to see what the ruckus was about, I watched the first five episodes of Daily lives of highschool boys yesterday.

No need to say that I lost it pretty hard several times, it's probably been a while since I last laughed that much in front of an anime :3

Duckroll > Isn't there also some problem with Bebop having some CG post-processing, which would actually need some rework to look good? I think I read it here several weeks ago.

Bebop was mostly done on film, wasn't it? It shouldn't be a problem.

All these old series coming out on bluray is great, they literally look better than they ever have before.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

I'm pretty much blown away by how great this movie was. I basically put this off due to the bitter aftertaste of Endless Eight which really did ruin the second season beyond repair. With that in mind, this felt like one big apology letter to the fans for how fucking awful Endless Eight was and I must say that for the most part, they succeeded at making up for it.

At this point I'm actually looking forward to see if KyoAni bother with a third season. I'd be kinda surprised if they didn't given how successful this series must have been financially and I'm sure they could use the money after Nichijou practically bombed sales wise
Well... there was the K-On! movie but still...

The Vision of Escaflowne blu-ray box set comes out in Japan next week!

looks like now would be a good time to check this show out

Bebop already has recent HD masters which were used for the recent R2J DVDs (just downscaled) so it's clearly not an issue. Distributors just don't like oversaturating the market.

It won't happen with this one given the production in question, but never say never... it depended on the authoring center they commissioned the work to, and when you only have fairly old digital assets and trust in a company like Q-TEC, INC. in the use of their 'proprietary technologies' to handle tasks like video scale and such, you can only end up with things like this one here (for a fairly infamous example):

They couldn't oversaturate the market with shows of Bebop's quality even if they wanted to.

Well, it's never happened to their native HD stuff -- I should've clarified.

Althoug their Bebop movie release is a bit weird looking and the US BD looks better. JP release has some weird black crush and EE going on.

I've heard that Disappearance is really good, but I still have some reservations about watching it. How do the characters compare from the TV series? The cast was completely unlikeable in the first season, are they any better in the movie?

Nah, I knew what you meant... you know very well your stuff! I just wanted an excuse to post a remembrance about such kind of atrocities camouflaged as premium releases. Some things shouldn't be forgotten!

I think all the characters change because Haruhi has dissapeared, i.e the esper, time lord and Nagato are normal people now.

Probably why it recieves such high praise. [/troll]

This movie has been on my to watch list for forever.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Infact this is the primary reason why it's taking me so long, goddamn was E8 so awful, I only just finished off S2 near the end of last year.

That actually sounds like it might be decent then, Haruhi is by far the worst character.

yeah, the lack of Haruhi for a sizeable amount of the movie helps a great deal

Tomodachi wa Mahou
Clearly it's working!

Anyway, the show certainly has a wide variety of scenarios so it doesn't become overly rote.

What. Angel's Egg, Patlabor, Maison Ikkoku, Urusei Yatsura (the inferior second half....) etc.

That people don't respect the constitution any more.

I meant what I said.

The Maison Ikkoku anime was solid but not great. Never watched Patlabor. And everybody already knows what I think of Angels Egg.

80% of Kenshin is the best thing DEEN has done though, that much is true. But their past history is nearly as checkered as their present.

Kyon is the sole purpose for watching the show, I don't think the show would have been tolerable by human beings if he wasn't there.

Oh, well, I don't like Kyon either. At least he isn't as bad as the moeblob, haruhi, or the Rei clone.

I was like you yet watched the movie as soon as it came out on BD. I love it to death, but I'm still not sure I'll ever be able to totally shake away that terrible taste E8 left in my mouth. I know several people who loved S1 and totally dropped the thing after 3 or 4 E8 episodes.

This discussion is kinda 2009, but I'll never understand why they thought it'd be a good idea. It's seriously like they didn't want the thing to sell. Talking about that, did S2 ever came out in the US?
It's actually coming out next month in France, but at a 60€ price point it'll be a wonder if they sell more than a couple hundreds...

I really don't think you'll enjoy it anywhere as much. The initial point of the movie is precisely about the loss of everything that made the series what it was.

The Vision of Escaflowne 1-2
LG7Lj.png

My first and only exposure to The Vision of Escaflowne was the movie which I saw a few times when Adult Swim aired it. At the time, I sort of just assumed the movie would provide an aside to the series, or maybe even some sort of conclusiveness that wasn't provided otherwise. The style and quality of the movie really captivated me and drove my interest to (eventually) watch the series. I guess it turns out the movie is a retelling of the events in the series? It doesn't really matter at this point, I just want an excuse to revisit that world. Other than seeing the movie on tv, I've pretty much gone into the series blind of any reception good or bad, which I think is generally an ideal situation in most cases.

That being said, I'm specifically enamored by the design of the universe presented thus far. The different weapons and armors that people tote are really familiar, but seem... more real? Like each swing of a sword has more oomf. Though I guess that's better attributed to the way they're animated. Kinetic and equally impactful. Specifically the mechs (if you can even call them that) are really awesome in the way that they're animated. I much prefer these bulky slow swinging armors than I do the fast and erratic ones you see elsewhere.

The characters aren't really anything to write home about, but a lot can happen in 26 episodes I guess. Looking forward to watching more after that fantastic and eventful 2nd episode. Great pacing can do wonders on one's outlook of a series.

Escaflowne TV >>>>>>> Escaflowne movie. I think you're really going to enjoy this show. ^_^

The quality of the animation and drawing detail in this movie is breathtaking compared to lots of modern anime. It's beautiful every time I watch it.

Can you watch and understand Disapearance, if you don't know anything about the Haruhi canon story?

Not really. It basically assumes you know who the characters are, and ESPECIALLY assumes you've seen Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, also briefly mentioning lots of other events in the show.

But you see, the loss of everything that made the series what it was would mean I could enjoy it. If Haruhi got rid of, well, Haruhi, I think I would really enjoy it. I might sound like I'm being overly harsh or critical, so I'll just clarify my position a little. I had only heard pretty much rave reviews about Haruhi before I watched it, so my expectations were a lot higher than they should have been. And the first episode, when they make their homemade film, was quite good. But then I found out what the actual characters were like, Haruri is a complete bitch, and although it's played for laughs, it just goes too far to actually be funny. Yuki is a pointless Rei clone, right down to being so emotionless she's boring. Mikuru is at least somewhat decent, although her complete moeblobness feels really out of place. I didn't watch far enough to get a real idea of what the
esper
was like, so I won't comment on him. I know a lot of people like Kyon, but I didn't find his snide/smartass comments funny, just annoying and far too forced. If I had had different expectations about what the show was actually going to be like, I might have enjoyed it more than I did.

This really reminded me of the mansion segment in Innocence, except it was the whole movie. I know it's supposed to be the other way around, but yeah.

I really liked it, obviously. Not really going to go into detail until a second watch because that's just how I do things. :>

If that is the case, then it is pass for me. I have not enjpoyed teh TV series (except for Kyon, but that wasn't enough) and I am not attched to the series whatsoever.

it's one of those movies where you really need to see the tv series to appreciate it.

It's that KyoAni magic at work with a budget fit for a film. The K-On! movie's gonna own for the same reason.

Disappearance isn't really a standalone movie. It assumes you've watched the series and a large number of its component parts rely on that knowledge.

How much did you watch exactly, then? hahahah can't have been much :|

don't watch dissappearance without having seen all of the series. the pay off is about 10000x times better if you have and you're bound to think the movie is shitty and pointless if you haven't.

Well, the order of the episodes was really confusing me, it seemed like there was 3 different orders or something, so I never watched an episode that had much focus on him. And honestly, I really wasn't enjoying it, and I doubt watching further would have changed that.

Got damnit, it always gets me how they can turn a 99% serious episode yet still manage to fit in that 1% funny moment without it feeling inappropriate at all.

And dat last scene, why can't it be next week already!?

Yep.

Fuck I'd kill to have someone as snarky and cynical as him be the star of a proper echii/harem manga. It'd be amazing.

A post like that is always interesting to read, Typographenia. Thanks for it!

Also, you act like this is one of your first times here, but you don't need to... I remember your posts from many Japanese animation related threads, even on the seasonal ones, of this forum (although I don't remember this kind of large reviews, I appreciate the step-up)...
Sometimes I get a little too excited about things. I was concerned mainly with causing a "tl;dr" mentality.
I wish I could remember you more, but with a name like /XX/ you're so mysterious. Do you wear a top hat, perchance?

I wonder why I've still yet to actually see the bluray of Bebop's movie..? Must not be looking hard enough.
I certainly wouldn't mind them getting around to giving Bebop the ol' treatment, so long as they don't go screwing around with the aspect ratio or stretching the picture to make it widescreen. : (

Thankfully this is extremely frowned upon. Also, /XX/ is one of those people that is too reasonable for this thread ;)

This show is really cheap-looking. Lots of stills and awfully bad art for what should be the high point. And yet I can't stop watching. The team dynamics are very fun, and this show definitely fills up a niche that has been missing in my anime-watching since Giant Killing.

They won't do that.
I certainly hope not, but after what I saw of FLCL's update (one free episode from itunes), I'm not putting it past anyone.

Then again, is it wrong that I opted for the dvd version of yu yu hakusho over bluray, because I liked the slightly yellow look it had to it? Something must be wrong with my brain.
Or right!
