Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

wow... fma movie 2.

last 1/3 of the movie went crazy dark, went all akira... and force lightning duel o_O.

Still not digging how they animated the hair in this film... looks like squids o_O.

Otherwise a pretty good movie. A lot better than your average shounen anime feature film.

Yeah it's good to see people taking screen cap and writing long feedback about random anime, once in a while it got me back to watching too.

I just tend to see really short posts in here most commonly. Good! Glad to know I won't be shamed out of the thread on my first day!

Give it a week... mwahahahaha!

Yeah we get some lengthy reviews here and there, but most of the posts tend to be short since we are usually focusing single episodes vs full shows.

The images were a nice touch.

You'll be glad to know that your impressions have piqued my interest in that movie. Providing pictures is also great as I can get a taste of whether i'll like the art (In this case, I do)

They Were Eleven

One major point involving Frol and another crewmate (forget the name) felt really shoe-horned and handled poorly towards the end. MAJOR SPOILER:
Frol turns out to be a hermaphrodite (as was another crewmate previously before becoming male), and will be granted the chance to become a male upon completion of the test. On Frol's planet, everyone is born genderless, and only the first born is allowed to be male. The males are allowed to marry many, many wives, and the wives do all the work. In order to escape being married off to a neighbor with 8 wives and is 18 years older, Frol wishes to become a male by proving the qualities through the test. However, when things seem dire towards the end, Tada suggests becoming a female, moving to his planet, and they marry. Frol accepts, but later on we learn that Frol still has the chance to become male after all. Tada breaks the news to Frol, but Frol says that she will become a woman if that's what Tada still wants. It made me angry at first, since the entire purpose for Frol's hard work was to become male but throws it away because of Tada's suggestion. However, due to the rushed nature of the movie, I realized later that they had essentially spent two months together over the course of the film, and it is entirely possible that these types of feelings had developed between the two of them. Again, this feels like a flaw with film runtime more than anything. It just came off pretty poorly, but I felt somewhat better afterwards about it. Well, you know, other than the many years Frol had been alive before these events driving that desire to become male. The whole thing about gender roles and inequality just felt really weakly handled. It could have worked just as well without it, since they didn't have the time to make it work well. I don't know.
That's a fairly major point in the original manga. I can't speak to how well it's handled because, well, I haven't been able to track down a copy of the film yet. However, the manga itself isn't particularly long, so I don't know how well it would work as a mimi-series, perhaps more things could be fleshed out.

Good! I probably should have taken more time to make the pictures look a little better outside of auto-contrast, but sharpen filter always looks so bleh to me.

edit:

It just felt like something they really wanted to do, but just ran out of time to do it or couldn't conceive a better way of weaving it naturally into the events of the story without losing sight of the main plot. Either way, it was a little surprising, and I might have preferred it were dropped altogether, if only for spending that time on the crew as a whole or the passage of time.

Well, it's pretty hard not to pick something up for that price.
Especially when there's a multitude of B-movie-ish anime for $3-6!
I can't tell you how many times I tacked those on to my orders...

I've got several on standby just waiting for my next depressing purchase spree.

Pirates has been slow paced, but I'm not sure why something as generic and dull as Rinne no Lagrange is being used as the counter-example. Both shows are just now showing signs of going somewhere with their latest episode.

Well, even though I'm watching Rinne I agree that it's not a particularly inspiring title, but it's well made and pleasant on the eyes. I suppose people enjoy the characters, or something.

Sounds like something I could use as filler. Need to keep that in mind next time.

Because out of watching the two, I simply like one more than the other, and feel that one has progressed in establishing itself a lot faster. I can just be ham-handed with my opinions sometimes is all, so naturally I completely disagree with your assessment of Rinne due to my fun-factor and the derivation of my enjoyment. On a scale of my enjoyment charts, while Rinne can be generic it is not dull, while Pirates isn't totally generic but it's definitely still dull.

Regardless, a show about electronic warfare is not fun to me as I plain and simple prefer more hot-blooded action and expression.

Sailor Moon 45

All right I’ll keep this write-up real short.

Wait what? Holy shit, what the hell? .....

I can’t believe THAT just happened. Usagi is worthless. She is the Mark Sanchez of Sailor Scout team leaders.

Rei is a god damn boss. Ami is weak sauce. All the other girls fall in between except for Usagi who is the definition of FAIL.

The only death scene that really got to me was Rei’s. Her crying out for Yuichiro was ;_;

One episode to go. I don't even know what's going to happen. Well I kind of do since there's like another 150+ episodes to go after this. But I'll just conveniently ignore that!

[Rinne no Langare - 6]

I don't think I have much to say about this show that I haven't already said on multiple occasions. The aesthetics are great, the cinematography is above average for a TV series and the effects animation is great. I just find the show, overall, to be pretty dull.

It's not that the story is particularly bad - it's actually very average - it's just that the 'characters', such as they are, can't possibly hold up up such a premise. Perhaps if there was none of this 'serious stuff' it would work better, I don't know, but there's nothing really interesting happening.

Dirty Pair 24

So after 24 episodes of teasing, they get real classy and show some tits. At this point its rather funny because I was expecting a bit of that when I started watching given the premise and when it was made, particularly with the amount of shower scenes in the show already, but it never happened until now. Struck me as kind of odd really, why now? Perhaps it was because they were doing a parody of the Psycho shower scene. It was pretty great episode though, the girls play bait for a serial killer. It was a good murder mystery, much different from the usual for this show. Now that I think about it, the episode reminds me a bit of another Hitchcock film, Rope, in that the entire episode takes place in a single room. In general it parodies a lot of thriller tropes, but those two Hitchcock movies definitely come to mind here.

And if your asking yourself, did he just post about this episode because of the tits? Yes, yes I did.

You probably weren't expecting that kind of episode when you started watching Dirty Pair huh? I think it says a lot about Yuri and Kei that you can just drop them into another genre, but with the shows usual tone, and it works well. It means the show doesn't have to get stale by sticking too closely to a formula.

Of course, it does stick to that formula for the vast majority of the show, but hey.

aaaaaaaargh

(Dirty Pair 24 is certainly an atypical episode, but I don't find the show as a whole that formulaic.)
Clearly it's working!

Anyway, the show certainly has a wide variety of scenarios so it doesn't become overly rote.
What?

Higurashi + Full Moon + Giant Killing > Anything pre-2000.

What. Angel's Egg, Patlabor, Maison Ikkoku, Urusei Yatsura (the inferior second half....) etc.
Seriously, what is your problem?

That people don't respect the constitution any more.

The Western themed episode, I forget which one it was, was similar in that regard. Stick the characters in a different genre and have at it. There was another that parodied the monster movie genre that I thought was great. With such strong leads, and given the tone of the show, its a perfect way to mix it up really. I really enjoy when shows can pull this sort of thing off, because it takes the right kind of leads to do it well. Makes for some entertaining anime that's for sure, particularly in this show where the "normal" scenarios are executed so well. In general the show does an excellent job of giving the viewer a lot of different variety in each episode, which isn't something I was expecting going in. It really would have been easy for them to settle into a standard formula for this show, but that never really happened.

No one cared about watching the Cowboy Bebop movie when the series was over. .
I cared. Because in my youthful optimism I was looking for any signs that the end of series wasn't what it obviously was. I actually thought the movie happened after the series was over, so I took it as a validation of my hopes. When I learned the truth my innocence has been crushed :(

Dear Lord. On a purely auditory and visual level this show hits so hard. The new songs in the episode were just so good, and now they're throwing in some pretty hard lo-fi electronic music. There are scenes here that just become so much better because of the soundtrack, most notably the take off scenes in this episode, and the defensive preparations before that. I almost wish it was more pronounced, because it almost feels like it's being underplayed.

Story is moving along well enough for me still. "Balance T. Moid" actually did a lot with his time in the spotlight, and I found it rather interesting that
he's not pulling as many strings as he often appears to be.
Some of the action stuff wasn't all that satisfying,
particularly when it came to the large group of enemies,
but this was still an enjoyable episode.

Flower Declaration of Your Heart Ep6

That was some good stuff. It's nice to have a pretty traditional oldschool mecha anime with some really awesome modern digital art direction. I love the way the clouds, the sky, and the sea look in this show, but the mecha action is great too. I LOL'D at the "fight" near the end.

So, looks like shit is starting to hit the fan now, and we'll probably get more story exposition soon. The preview indicates there's another flashback next week. Yum...

The Vision of Escaflowne 1-2
LG7Lj.png

My first and only exposure to The Vision of Escaflowne was the movie which I saw a few times when Adult Swim aired it. At the time, I sort of just assumed the movie would provide an aside to the series, or maybe even some sort of conclusiveness that wasn't provided otherwise. The style and quality of the movie really captivated me and drove my interest to (eventually) watch the series. I guess it turns out the movie is a retelling of the events in the series? It doesn't really matter at this point, I just want an excuse to revisit that world. Other than seeing the movie on tv, I've pretty much gone into the series blind of any reception good or bad, which I think is generally an ideal situation in most cases.

That being said, I'm specifically enamored by the design of the universe presented thus far. The different weapons and armors that people tote are really familiar, but seem... more real? Like each swing of a sword has more oomf. Though I guess that's better attributed to the way they're animated. Kinetic and equally impactful. Specifically the mechs (if you can even call them that) are really awesome in the way that they're animated. I much prefer these bulky slow swinging armors than I do the fast and erratic ones you see elsewhere.

The characters aren't really anything to write home about, but a lot can happen in 26 episodes I guess. Looking forward to watching more after that fantastic and eventful 2nd episode. Great pacing can do wonders on one's outlook of a series.

There was so much cloud porn in this episode that it hit critical levels.

Great mecha action! And I thought I would never see such hand-drawn stuff again.

There's certainly no shortage of great (traditional) mecha animation during the series, and certainly the reasons you cited are a big part of that. Faster is not always better; the slower action helps to establish a real sense of mass and weight. That's something that is really hard to do with CG mecha.

Of course the series itself is also really entertaining and has a wonderful Kanno score.

Oh wow, you're in for a real treat. It's quite the series, even though I felt weird about the movie. Also this fucking song and OST are great. Kanno is so good.

Forgive me if this comes off as too "reviewy" or something. I just needed to break my thoughts up in a way that made sense to me. I definitely won't do this with every post.
A post like that is always interesting to read, Typographenia. Thanks for it!

Also, you act like this is one of your first times here, but you don't need to... I remember your posts from many Japanese animation related threads, even on the seasonal ones, of this forum (although I don't remember this kind of large reviews, I appreciate the step-up)...
