Noob question: If I have several background tasks that use a data connections (Whatsapp, Messenger hub, Facebook...), do they add up in their battery use, or doesn't it really matter how many I use at the same time if I use at least one?

That depends on MS's implementation of background tasks and what those background tasks are doing. If they are just waiting for push notifications, MS has implemented a solution for that in W8 that will nullify any battery loss due to multiple tasks waiting for them. Not sure if it is in WP7 already though.

Push Notifications all come to the phone over a single connection. Background tasks would have their own connections. That said, apps like Whatsapp and Facebook use push notifications, not Background Tasks.

Ah, thanks. So no further damage to my battery life if I activate several push notifications?

There shouldn't be much impact. You also have to consider though, that some apps that do notifications using polling instead of push. Though I guess this was pre-Mango and a lot of those have gone to Background Agents instead.

Low end Tango phones aren't going to be sold in the same markets as WP is currently selling in, so I don't think its relevant.

I get what you're saying, but the situation for WP apps is dire enough as it is, creating two targets with a huge difference in capabilities will cause issues down the road.

I also have to question the logic of creating a new target platform with only 256MB of RAM in this day and age. Even most of the recent low end Android phones have stepped up to 512MB. Where are the cost benefits in this case?

They're going after the feature phone market and PAYG market, where they move million of devices. Every penny counts.

Nokia Lumia 610 to set new bar for budget Windows Phones
Exclusive: Likely to land as PAYG only

Buying a Windows Phone-powered Nokia to get seriously cheap

Nokia's forthcoming Lumia 610 is set to tread new ground for the Windows Phone platform and enter the market as a pay as you go only offering.

Three new phones are expected to debut from Nokia at Mobile World Congress 2012, and sources close to the matter have confirmed to TechRadar that the budget model will be priced very aggressively in UK shops.

With the Nokia Lumia 710 already only costing £199.99 on PAYG with O2, and further price drops anticipated in the near future, it's not a great leap to think that the Lumia 610 will be cheaper still if we follow Nokia's numbering strategy.

Cheap, cheap and cheap again

Now this has been confirmed, it also seems pretty much nailed on that it will be running the super-cheap version of Windows Phone, named Tango, which is expected to be launched at MWC 2012 by Microsoft.

The new OS is heavily rumoured bring support for lower end hardware (such as fewer pixels, slower processors and perhaps no dedicated camera shutter) and fits perfectly with a cheap-as-chips handset appearing on the market.

Definite pricing for the Nokia Lumia 610 has yet to be confirmed for the new phone as yet, but the idea of a Windows Phone handset for under £100 should surely start getting the budget Android manufacturers a little hot under the collar.

I've kind of decided to just ignore anything Tango until it becomes official because its all so confusing :p

Will be interesting to see how a phone like the Lumia 610 performs though.

Well the kind of Android device you get for £100 on PAYG is a Galaxy Mini:

600mhz processor
160mb of ram
3.14" 240 x 320 pixel panel
SD Card Support
3mp Camera

And Android (2.3) runs just fine on there (within reason).

Tango rumours say minimum of 256mb of ram so I wonder if they will be able to make it that cheap.

I was sceptical about Tango but looking around at prices of PAYG phones, there really is a gap for a great handset at that kind of price, wonder if Nokia can make it happen.

Bleh. I still have hatred for low end Android after owning an Eris. It does not run fine, even making phone calls was a damned hassle.

I can't even imagine how bad Android is on something like that.
I get the joy of troubleshooting every single problem my cousin faces with his Galaxy Mini. Let's just say it's not pretty.

Also, the Mini has been around for a year now, you'd think things would get a bit better by then.

If that <100 Lumia rumor is correct though, I can understand. At that price I'd expect big numbers to be moved. Here's hoping they actually acknowledge the third world regions Tango was designed for. (lol middle east)

Yeah, it's much improved. But I think the banner wastes a bit too much space and also visually weighs down on the page.

Still, I'm grateful for this.

I asked to see a Nokia 710 at Rogers the other. I was pretty surprised at how nice it felt. At $250 it is a very good deal. Hopefully Telus will release the 800 soon too.

Am I stupid or is there no way to choose the banner images? Why can't it just use our cover image (from Timeline) ?

Much needed update, but still a lot left to do (individual comment liking being the biggest one here).

I still think MS/FB's priority should be on getting the People Hub to be a first-party app.

Nope you can't choose the images that show in the banner. You can make the app randomly generate the picture again. But thats it.

Speaking of Facebook. Yes somehow the People Hub should be a first party app.

No onto something that I'd love to also see fixed asap.

Vibration for incoming emails as a setting. I know you can set a sound for emails and when your in silent mode the phone will vibrate.

I'd like that expanded. Be able to set vibration as an option for incoming emails so you can have a ringer but email still vibrates. Another option i'd like to see is different alerts for different email accounts.

The whole alert system needs to be revamped. We had to wait for Mango for ringtones for phone calls, but what about SMS/Email, and most importantly (since I almost always use vibrate anyways) alarms!

I hate having such a modern OS and yet be missing stuff from my feature phone of six years ago..

So I’ve had a school project for the last year which has been about smartphone and smartphone applications.
One of the things I was supposed to do was creating apps, so I started on developing for Windows Phone a few months ago.

And this is the result:

A free simple percent calculator: http://windowsphone.com/s?appid=d612538b-3849-4e3a-9660-669c94ba2405

And a smoothie recipe application: http://windowsphone.com/s?appid=0606b71d-d096-4b02-b7fd-18757529875e

Feel free to rate the apps if you enjoyed them. If you have any complains regards my apps, then just PM me and I will do my best to fix the issues ASAP.

Haven't had the time to dl them, but from those screenshots, looks like you misspelled "increase" (increace).

Gonna dl later tonight, seems like you did a good job otherwise :)

Any thoughts on coding for WP?

My wife has an unlocked HTC surround. I've been trying to get it to update to mango but always get the same error. It is very annoying. I've searched the web but alas to no avail. Does anyone have any idea how i can get this update though zune? Just this little mishap from MS has severely dampened my outlook on windows phone 7. urgh

Posting the error (code) would be really helpful.

IE9 mobile gets all slow and laggy with animated gif files. What's worse is that the photo viewer/hub will not play gif animations.

Yeah GIF heavy GAF threads can be a bit of a chore to browse. I'm not sure if that's the browser or just the hardware itself.

It's the browser for sure. No way my Lumia can't handle that Victoria secret jiggly boobs threads.

MS for some reason hates gif files. Even Live Photo Gallery doesn't support animated gif.

IE notoriously sucks for gifs. It is ridiculous on the desktop version as well. I cant remember how IE10 reacts.

We are going to need a new none shitty OT soon. Someone who will keep up with it.

It's better than any other mobile platform from my experience, especially iOS. Of course it could be better though.
