Good, thats good.

I love how they won't allow you not to have AA!

PC woot woot!

I saw the title, the first thing my GAF mind thought, was "Dennis will be pleased". It's glorious on 360 as is, albeit noticeably sub-HD and with a liberal sprinkling of tearing. Seeing it unleashed at 1080p60 with 8xMSAA will be magical. Will that performance be possible with a good enough rig?

Just bought the game hopefully the 5870 can run it reasonably.

Post back soon because I have that card as well and would like to know what I'm getting myself into if I get the game.

Oh and ^5 to the guy from Remedy. Love your games!

Against better judgement I've decided to download the game even though my 560 will probably blow up.

It won't do, will it? >_<

Not posting anytime soon. The max i can download is 1.4 mb a sec, plus i wanna finish off Saints Row 3 and Space Marine before getting into another game.

Sorry, was at the bottom of last page and I need to know before I purchase, it's essentially up to GAF if I buy AW or not...

Oh shit, I don't know if I should get it or not, some of the performance comments are making me second guess.

I have an iMac 3.4Ghz i7, 6970m (overclocked to about 6850 performance) and 12gb ram. Would it be possible to lock it at 30FPS (using Dxtory) with reasonable settings at 1080p?

A friend of mine is playing on a 560Ti--is yours a Ti?--and it's running well, I guess. He hasn't complained.

yea Ti, when I turn off SLI I can rather painlessly reach 1ghz on the core.

I understand the resolution and textures are higher quality, but never once during the 360 version did I sit back and go "This game is ugly". I thought it was amazing. The design and setting of the game is enhanced and improved on the PC for sure, but it's still the same art design and gameplay.

Found this on the Alan Wake Steam forums. Basically stating that the sliders for LOD and Draw distance are bugged. Here is the post and 2 people also saying they noticed it as well...just a heads up.

Hey guys from Remedy. The Slider for the Draw Distance is currently bugged.

If its turned to the right the Draw Distance is closer but it should be far away. And left side is the other way arround of course.

Please fix that. I also noticed some weired Tree flickering on the Boat Scene in the beginning. Please fix that too.

Otherwise Awesome game. Got it on Xbox 360 already :p But i just had to buy it on PC too

Yepp just noticed that too. LOD one is bugged too.

looks good. more sterile clinical look tho since everything is so clear. i think depth of field would improve the atmosphere of the visuals.

Sure. That's available as a commandline option. See more here:

http://forum.alanwake.com/showthread.php?t=7759&highlight=noblur

You can check for latest info on the SLI stuff in the same forum.

just tested AMD HD3D with iz3d. it works, but there are at least a few minor graphical glitches. distant mountains are missing some polys in one eye. some of the fog effects seem a bit off too, but haven't looked too deeply at what or why yet.

just going to test TriDef 3D.

I have a GTX460 1GB, and it hasn't dropped below 30 fps so far.

I play at 1680x1050 with 2xMSAA, max draw distance and lod distance, everything on high except SSAO. I think you'll be fine with a 560ti, even at 1080p.

I'll play a bit more and see how it will run as soon as more stuff happens.

Yeah I had that flickering with the trees on the boat and in other places if you angle the camera a certain way. Overall it looks beautiful on my plasma, even though some of the foliage doesn't look so great. Game is good though and I like the atmosphere, just wish the cut scenes were in 1080p.

Stunning.

The demands are way overblown by most and there's plenty of settings to dial back. You'll be fine.

Edit:

At 2560x1440, well yeah, that aint going to work. You really shouldn't be using a 1GB graphics card (SLI or not) at that resolution.

I'd try hardware scaling 1080p, should look good.

HD3D is way more messed up with TriDef. regular mode has shadows tweaking out all over the place, and virtual mode completely messes up most of the alpha objects. going to see if i can tweak iz3D to get rid of some of the defects... but it looks pretty good in iz3D to be honest.

Oh man, I caved... I had $2.50 credit as well, and with the exchange rate into AUD, I got it for $16.60. Will post performance details when it's downloaded.

Sorry guys. I just copied and pasted the above from the Steam forums, upon testing this myself the OP was wrong over at Steam forums. The sliders are working as intended as noted below in the reply to the OP at the officail Steam Forums.

Agains, sorry for posting B.S. :(

*************THIS IS INCORRECT**************

I just tested this and the OP is WRONG. In the beginning of the game, when you finish the first part at night and you are now in the day time, when you get to the Cabin on the lake, walk back up to where the car is parked.

In this scene, you are high above the water, over-looking the lake house and the mountains and other buildings in the far-backround.

Reducing the Draw Distance all the way to the Left causes the building and tree's that are on the mountain in the backround to disappear and reappear (draw in) as you turn the camera. Changing the slider to the right elminates this all together and there is no draw distance. With it to the left there was even a small mountain appearing and disappearing as you panned the camera. Slider to right eliminated all the draw in, not even one tree was popping up, they were all solid.

**The slider is working as intended**

For the LOD, same thing. Sitting on top of the same area, I turned around and walked towards the gate and you can see the textures on a stack of logs changing as it loads in the higher resolution textures. Turning the slider all the way to right, it is completely perfect, no changing of textures. This slider is also working as intended. Having the slider to the left causes it to display lower end textures and as you approach items it loads in higher rez. textures. Having the slider to the right elimates this and has the higher rez texture loaded in at a farther distance...again working as intended.

Please ensure you test stuff OP before posting false information. The sliders are working as intended and you can test this yourself easily. I am glad I did, because I turned them down and went to the top of the cabin area and noticed nasty draw in and LOD issues.

So much talk about the gfx..
Can anyone enlighten me about the gameplay/story?

Is it like Max Payne in the dark? Or more like Alone in the Dark?
Is it mostly fighting/shooting, or are there adventure/puzzle elements?
Is there any freedom / choices to make, or is it a linear, cinematographic experience?
Are there things like sidequests, NPC's, dialog options, inventory?

Thanks!

just some more notes on AMD HD3D with iz3d. shadows are rendering at screendepth and fog against the sky is vanishing when rendering in 3D also. alan himself looks slightly motion blurred even when stood still. some parts of distant objects (like distant mountains) aren't properly situated in 3d, hopefully iz3D, tridef or remedy can iron out these issues to get a perfect HD3D experience for us AMD peeps :) disabling the vector blur fixes Alan being blurred, but the other problems remain.

edit: oh, performance. in 720p framepacked 3D mode my performance is about half what i get in 1080p in 2D.

Looks fantastic to me. But I am getting a weird graphical bug where it should be dark inside buildings, but instead it is well lit. Will sort it out tomorrow, it's really late.... *hugs remedy*

full res, not downsampled, 2xaa, fxaa low.

LMAO!

Nice touch with the QR code in Chapter 2, guys.

It translates to
"Huh. Turns out this isn't too bad even if you're not sitting on a couch when you play it. Who knew!"

Edit: Spoiler tagged an easter egg by request.

Couldn't resist the Green Man Gaming deal of 33% + no sales tax (as a Washington state resident, I have to pay sales tax on Steam), which pretty much made it a 43% discount.

I'm still deep into Kingdom's of Amalur, but I'll definitely download and give this a try tonight. I've been looking forward to playing it for years.

It's not too unlike Max Payne. Like MP, it's a primarily a third person shooter. Max's twist is bullet time, Alan's twist the light/dark mechanic that has you sort of dispelling darkness from enemies with your flashlight. There are some hidden nooks and crannies to explore, but it's a mostly linear affair.

Is it mostly fighting/shooting, or are there adventure/puzzle elements?

It is mostly fighting/shooting, but there are some brief story-focused segments without combat.

Is there any freedom / choices to make, or is it a linear, cinematographic experience?

There are no choices or branching paths in the story, as far as I can remember.

Are there things like sidequests, NPC's, dialog options, inventory?

No sidequests or open world stuff, it's strictly chapter to chapter progression. No inventory, aside from the ammo and batteries you carry.

Really enjoying this, controls well with M/KB and the massively improved visuals really make the game more enjoyable.

It was also in chapter 1, but use spoiler tags as that was an easter egg that some people would of wanted to discover it.

The no blur one does not work. I tested it several times and when the game loads I get a "no world load" message and a black screen right after. The remedy intro plays out, then I get the error and a black screen.

Any other way to turn off the motion blur when turning around?

The Chapter 1 one gave me a link to the Alan Wake Facebook page.

As for the spoiler tags.. I guess. Only because you asked so nicely. lol

the command worked for me. HD7970, Win 7 64 bit here.

I'm in exactly the same situation, except for the Washington state sales tax issue (Pennsyvania here). I'm deep into Amalur but I couldn't resist the sale.

The lightning is wierd... i'm sure there's something wrong. The Dinner right at the start when Alan arrives is so bright, then in the cutscene it's dark... the nearby corridor is also messed up. Is this right?

I had this problem too. I fixed it with resetting CCC to std. and restarting the game.

Game is running decently on my 470. Love having the FOV slider in the options also, nice touch, and it works properly without the screen getting all crazy and fish-eyed.

Really cool port of the game so far. The sound mix sounds even better to me than it did before, maybe the audio compression is better? I haven't played the 360 version in a while so I could be misremembering.

Slightly higher FOV is really nice and you are right, the PC version has uncompressed audio.
