Alan Wake PC | Tech, performance and information thread

So opinions...

Will this run on a laptop with an AMD 3500m with a 6620g graphics chip?

I'm tempted to double dip for the collectors edition, but don't want it if it's going to be 10fps .

Well color me surprised, 30 fps! Everything max except AA and SSAO (low)@ 2560x1440 and I'm at 30 locked though with gpu at 95% so things like flares drop it down to 25 for that moment.

The tutorial is rather hectic and with quite a lot going on on the screen so I hope it's a good indicator of the performance throughout the game. I must say I'm really glad with the performance, the game looks amazing as well. Now if nvidia could give me that magical 0.9-1.0 scaling...

Ffs, that's over £6 I could have saved.

Ever since their summer deals last year, I've made it a policy to always check GMG (and the thread here on GAf) before buying a Steamworks game.

The GMG deal is just too good to pass up on day 1.

Enjoyed the 360 version for the atmosphere, soundtrack and relatively solid gameplay. I spent the whole time thinking how much better this would look without the tearing and sub-HD rubbish so this was a no brainer really.

Hope my 2500k @ 4GHz and OCed 570 can get this running at 60fps/1080p.

Be sure to update us. I have the exact set up but my CPU is at stock and wanna know how well it will run before I buy it.

GFX question for you guys. It's not directly related to Alan Wake but since it's a very dark game the problem is worst than for a brighter game.

So I noticed that when I bought my new computer a couple of months ago with my Radeon 6870 everything was too bright in windows and in games. So basically I'm stuck with using Powerstrip in windows to reduce the Gamma by a LOT if I don't want to have a ton of color banding. I also often have to reduce the brightness all the way to the bottom in games to reduce the banding to minimum. So for example in Dead Island and Alan Wake I'm all the way to the left at 0 and in Dead Space 2 I even had to go in the ini file to put a negative value to Brightness to get something not completly ugly. BTW I didn't change monitor when I bought my PC and it was fine before with my old NVIDIA card.

The problem is always worst during cinematics because of the compression (I doubt I could do much about that) but I'm wondering if anybody know a good solution for that in game?

It's really starting to get on my nerves...that shit is annoying!

BioShock Infinite is like playing some homeless guy's vivid imagination
I'd love it if someone with an i3-2100 and/or a Radeon HD 6850 could post impressions.

fuckkkk that looks good. I loved the shit out of AW on 360. I have more than a capable build to max 60 fps @ 1080p. Ughhh Bite or wait Bite or Wait

Runs pretty good on my gtx480; all maxed @ 1680x1050 I average 45-50 fps, which is not bad.

I tested 3Dvision too, average around 25 fps at that resolution (meaning 720p3D at a playable is going to be easily achievable).

I get a strange flickering bug every now and then, especially over trees, anyone know what's up?

So glad this finally came out. My 360 had died just days after buying this game and I didn't bother buying a new one, so never played through it.

Sure. That's available as a commandline option. See more here:

http://forum.alanwake.com/showthread.php?t=7759&highlight=noblur

You can check for latest info on the SLI stuff in the same forum.
Holy crap, major respect points for the command line options (I saw the blur option worked for one person, but not for another person) as well as the info, such as where save files etc. are stored.

Thanks for not having (as far as I know) draconian DRM, by the way. I think I'll grab this on Steam tonight. :D

I love this game. Played a lot on 360, and I'm having a blast playing it again.

And it looks really, really good, even if it kind of shows its age (low poly models and everything).

The only DRM it has is that it's Steamworks. Which means you should probably check it out on GreenMan Gaming since they're having a 30% off deal right away.

LMAO!

Nice touch with the QR code in Chapter 2, guys.

It translates to
"Huh. Turns out this isn't too bad even if you're not sitting on a couch when you play it. Who knew!"

Edit: Spoiler tagged an easter egg by request.
lol

I wonder if there'll be an actual comfy couch easter egg.

Game works perfectly on my 6870. FXAA@max, 2xMSAA, LOD and Drawdistance @ 80%, everything else maxed [incuding fov].

I am playing this while sitting in front of my 32" 1080p monitor [samsung hdtv].... and... its... GLORIOUS.

Runs like butter for me maxed out (560ti, 6 gigs, i5 760).

Wasn't crazy about it on 360 (couldn't take the wooden models/animations seriously), but I'm looking forward to giving it another shot. It's certainly a god damned impressive tech showcase, even more so on PC.

And they say that the graphical jump in the next generation of consoles will not be big. Well if the jump looks like this, them it will be big.

The flare looks so fucking cool. Do the prerendered cutscenes still look like doodoo?

Yeah, the quality difference is so huge it's laughable. You go from a beautiful, crisp image to a dvd quality cut scene.

Sucks but what can ya do

Game is running great for me and looks fucking damn good. Much easier to play with KB/M as well. Still not sure I like the rampant shooting sections, the low-key sections are just so interesting, wish they were able to keep the other features in. But that's long past, can't wait to dive in farther.

Any impressions with a 5770/6770? Can't find any

I use a 5770 - but mind you, I run in window at around 1440x900 or so - with 4x MSAA I believe? If not 4x, then 2x - everything else Max, and the game is running quite good.

Downloading right now on my glorious rural Australian internet. By the sounds of things im guessing i could probably max it out at 1080p with 2x aa with xbox-ish performance on my 5850, 2500k 4.3 ad 8 gigs ram.

This doesn't seem right?
O9oyT.png

I will install it this weekend and see how much of an improvement it is over the Xbox 360 version. After getting 1500/1500 gamerscore I expect this run-through on PC to feel like a whole new game.

I'm definitely going to get this since I never played the 360 version and the game is supposed to be really good. I love that the PC version looks far better as well. They put effort in it.

Runs beautifully for me. 1080p, all settings maxed with 2xAA and FXAA set to high. Only saw slight dips when the flare gun was shot. Barely noticeable.

Rig:

i5 2500k @4.2ghz
GTX 580 1.5GB (290.53 drivers)
8GB RAM
Windows 7 64BIT

The GMG deal is just too good to pass up on day 1.

Funny how $10 dollars changes everything. I wasn't going to get this until the summer sale or something once I found out it was $30, but lo and behold, I see this -33% off on GMG 5 minutes ago and I bought it.

Color me surprised but I can it on high at 1080p and it runs great.

My specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 @3.4
ATI 6850 1GB
4GB ram
Windows 7 64-bit

soundtrack tracks aren't the same as the ones that came with the Xbox 360 collectors edition. there's a handful of tracks exclusive to each version. neat!
