I personally think that helped but Naruto and Bleach really resonate more with their target audience (Ninjas , guy with Spirtual powers and a huge sword) imo

I can say, anecdotical mind you, The art style is really what kills OP here. Every friend I talk to says they couldn't get into the manga because of the art was hard to tolerate. Not sure if that applies everywhere, but that's my two cents thrown in as to why it's not as sucessful as the other two

No not really. The most popular mangas during that time was Dragonball and Slamdunk in my town, so we probably perceived that One Piece unconventional art as immature, seeing as the nearest manga with that sort of art was from our childhood; Doraemon.

Say what you will, but it was a time before scanlations got popular and we had to spend a huge part of our allowances to buy our comics. And being kids, first perceptions counts, a lot.

Of course, One Piece got increasingly more popular as time goes by and is one of the most popular manga/animes now in Malaysia. Still second to Naruto though.

Let's be honest here, OP's art can be downright awful at times and Oda's busy panels where it seems he just throws shit on a wall don't help things either. The War arc is a pain in the fucking ass to read because you had to stare at pages for minutes at a time just to tell WTF just happened.

I like OP art style, though i agree, it can get pretty messy when too much crap is going on. But yea, I much prefer OP's style to most of the other samey junk out there since at least OP's style is different
