Glad to see that Hitomi's face was the only horrible one. Have they announced yet if this game is on the WiiU?

Yea, the whole "background getting destroyed behind you" is gonna get old super fast...

No. What's going to get old fast is the game slowing to a crawl every match when you hit someone into the environment hard enough. Supposedly, it's some QTE paper/rock/scissors type mini game that determines how much damage you do.

The unfitting Virtua Fighter character shoehorned in makes this even more unappealing.

Akira fits everywhere. Awesome is universal.

In terms of presentation the game is looking good but from a gameplay stand point I'm not so sure. That slow motion attack is already looking lame & the whole throw opponent into hot spot for cut-scene + massive damage again will get old fast. As a mindless fun game I think it will be good but for the competitive gamer I don't think it will have much staying power.
Even though I main Akira in Virtua Fighter this announcement fails to excite me, DOA mechanics won't do him justice. I sound pretty down on the game but I do see myself buying it, just probably for different reasons I buy other fighters though.

Doesn't seem to have gotten old for people through the last 4 or 5 games in the series.

Dude, DoA is my favorite 3D fighter. As hyped as I was for SC5 is nothing to the amount of OMG I'm doing right now. I've been at work for an hour now and haven't done jack shit but watch this vid over and over.
I can never narrow it down to a favorite series, lol. If I had to rank them for me it would go SC > VF > DOA > TK.

I thought that SoulCalibur had the most intuitive system, but they treat it like a redheaded stepchild and it always has buggy shit in it. Virtua Fighter has the most refined and well thought out system and character movelists, but it lacks the presentation of the other titles. Tekken has cool looking moves with the best OOMPH factor and my favorite character designs, but the system is a bloated, janky mess of unintuitive systems (it's still fun as hell).

But Dead or Alive? It has the biggest ideas and the most potential of them all. All the right gameplay systems in place, they just need some tweaking on the numbers. Like I said, if they can get their gameplay in order...watch out.

Guess the other guy had a point about the textures on the clothes getting downgraded. Shrugs, a fair exchange for the lighting.
It looks like the designs will be more visible when light hits it at the right angle.

It's not just hitting someone into the environment, it's hitting with the power blow. A move I doubt we'll be seeing all that often. On top of that, it slows down until you chose which area you want to send the opponent to. I think people will make that choice more quickly as time goes on and they adjust to the stages.

Character redesign is enough for me to get this....

...then they show gameplay, those quick cuts seem out of place, I don't think I like them.

The game will be 60fps, but we havent seen any videos running at 60fps yet. Encoding something at 60frames doesnt change the source fps

There absolutely was a 60 fps version of the trailer floating around, and I'm not talking about that shitty re-encoded version from FSD. I'm having trouble finding it now though.

scratch that, you're right. i found it and it's definitely not 60

It's kind of silly to expect anything less than 60 in a fighter anyway.

Okay, I saw that trailer with Akira in it. That was fucking sick.

A crossover needed to happen like yesterday. I don't even know what SFxT is anymore. I think this and TxSF could get me into 3D fighters in a big way.

Itagaki's taken potshots at VF although tame compared to Tekken, but still not the sort of thing somebody with his track record in the genre should be saying.

Edit: Found one.

I'm sure there's an earlier one though.

He had nice things to say about previous VFs though.

Itagaki: Oh, I like this one. It's Virtua Fighter 2, a very good game.

XBN: Have you played Virtua Fighter 4?

Itagaki: Yes. For about 30 minutes [laughs].

XBN: Well, the reason why we're showing you a screenshot of VF2 and not VF4 is because Dead or Alive has a lot in common, in terms of look and feel, to VF2. Was this game a great influence on you during the development of DOA?

Itagaki: Influence aside, without Virtua Fighter, there couldn't have been DOA. It's that simple. Sega and AM2 didn't give me any technical help or lend me their code or anything like that—we made DOA from scratch, but VF2 was definitely the pioneer. Because of this game, we now have DOA and Tekken. I spent a lot of time playing VF2. I like Sarah and Pai.

XBN: Have you ever expressed these sentiments to [VF2 creator] Yu Suzuki?

Itagaki: We've only had one conversation, and it wasn't really about his game. We talked more about the technology behind 3D fighters. At the time, I was struggling with getting our punches to look smooth and realistic in DOA, so I looked up Suzuki to consult him on the matter. To show respect to him, I gave him a detailed write-up of my problem, which was around three or four pages, and took it with me to visit him. Since it was the first time meeting him, I was a bit nervous, and right off the bat, Suzuki told me he didn't like reading papers. [Laughs]

XBN: So did he hook you up?

Itagaki: Well, he didn't give me any real direct answers, but he did tell me one thing, probably unintentionally. He told me that what I'm doing, technologically anyway, is completely different than what he's working on. When he said that, I know he didn't base it on any actual facts, since I didn't give him any real data. But when someone with the stature of Yu Suzuki tells me that we're doing two different things, technologically, it really pushed me to find the solution on my own. What's important in development is knowing whether something is possible. Once you know that, then the rest is easy.

Itagaki said:
As a fighting game – first of all, I think we can all agree that Virtua Fighter 5 didn’t end up as good as everyone thought it would be.

That's not a potshot.

Like Akira said in the video: "I've been waiting for this moment!". Why did this took them so long? And even then it's just a cameo. Didn't they seriously consider doing a crossover game ever since the Dreamcast came out? Both games use 3 buttons (Punch, Kick, Guard/Free) so it seemed like a natural fit.

Please DOAxVF and VFxDOA next, Sega and Tecmo Koei.

VF5 was definitely a step back in features from 4. If I remember correctly, Itagaki's only real problem with VF is that they add major new features then abandon them(arenas with imbalanced terrain, etc) instead of exploring them more fully, which is true. It's an incredibly safe series, design-wise.

Woaah Akira. I don't know how to use Akira, but this still makes me want DOA5 a lot more. Hopefully this crossover will be good publicity for Virtua Fighter.

I am so impressed with this new team ninja, DOA5 looks amazing. I loved DOA back in the day since I owned every single one released last gen on the xbox and ps2, but this new one looks so good, it's like the proper next gen sequel to DOA 3. I must say i'm also extremely impressed with their graphics engine, massively improved character models, multi-tier stages with a storm of stage effects, not forgetting the fighters clothes and body get visually dirty and roughed up being thrown and tossed all about these stages. That stage in particular looks amazing already, so i cant wait to see more.

With NG3 looking as good as it does and DOA5 looking just the same, I'm there day one for both of these titles. There's nothing I appreciate more than when a developer gives me 60fps with great graphics and effects at 720p with MSAA applied. I value a clean and sharp image above all else, games like this always look best to me. Thank you Itagaki San.

If they play their cards right, it could stand to benefit both series mutually.

Imagine if, in the near future, AM2 and Team Ninja co-oped to make one singular DOA+VF fighter that was good to go on both Sega's arcade hardware and home consoles. DOA gets to go back to the arcades for the first time in over a decade (and gain a bit more "street cred" to the FGC as a result), and VF gets the benefit of working with a brand that's perceived as more "accessible" to the casuals than it is.

The thought of such makes me giddy.

Thought it would never happen, but there it is, they've actually toned down the bounce. Or maybe I've just gotten used to Soul Calibur, don't know

They still jiggle quite a bit but about as much as you'd expect someone with a d cup bra size would jiggle while not wearing a bra :p

And .. speaking of the cupsize thing , these models just all around look more realistic, before Id' say their cup sizes were anime d cups (you know, more like G cups in real life, also they looked like implants on most girls).

I'm totally for this, the game just looks TONS better with less plastic looking characters , instead it seems as though this new engine they've got can handle some pretty stunning lighting.

Hayashi's Team Ninja has yet to really impress me since the closest they came to really making their own thing was Metroid Other M and while I found it played fine it was hampered by some of nintendos orders (forcing the use of just the wiimote , nintendo writing that awful story). THIS though, THIS game looks stunning. When I first saw DOA4 back in the middle of 2005 it didn't look much better than an HD version of ultimate doa2. Even upon release there were stages that showed some potential but overall the game needed more time in the oven.

Seems the team ninja of today, starting with Ninja Gaiden 3 , have rebuilt their in house engine. The dinosaur from the days of naomi has finally been buried. Someone above pointed out the textures are a bit worse - likely a concession to get the engine to work well on both consoles. Also, the lighting man, the lighting! The rebuilt models, everything just looks so much more consistent with this entry.

Love the lighting transition from the cave to outside.

Still can't get over how awesome the character models, lighting, and shading looks. And these are screengrabs from the HD trailer.

Who knew that a DOA game would receive the most unanimous early praise of any fighter this generation?

My already overloaded frothing demand is increasing.

I haven't bought a DOA game since 2 on the Dreamcast, but now this is most def on my radar.

If Akira transitions well (he looks like he fits right it) hopefully it goes into a DOA vs VF.
