Starbound announced - new game from Terraria artist + new studio

Why is Pinkie Pie in this game?

So apparently I'm purchasing this game with all of my money.

O.O.. after the 100 hours spent in Terraria like a drug addict, this game sounds very cool. Terraria concepts expanded with Sci-Fi and space exploration?.. omg. And the spritework is very good.

Holy shit. My money is ready.

I swear to fucking God I was working on a little game with procedurally generated planets. Man this sucks because I suck and they're Re-Logic. :/ Okay I'm kind of exaggerating, but it always bums me out that whenever I think I found something decently original, during the making of a prototype the game apparently already exists/is being made.

Don't worry, it happens in everything in life.

Sounds groovy.

Wonder if you'll be able to destroy the terrain in this. That sprite work is great, too.

2D sidescrolling procedurally generated planets along with the whole 'random alien/gravity' element; would use standard weapon gameplay (mouse cursor to shoot and whatnot) with some metroidvania and more original weapon systems and/or building/RTS elements. I was in the very early prototyping phases. Oh well it's not like it's a complete copy; coding's fun so I'll just continue on and change some core elements.

Ouch, that's rough. Don't worry though, the later games in a new-ish genre tend to be the big hits. Just watch Starbound to see what could be improved on... ;)

Day 1, this is the kind of game i've been waiting for. Of course I imagined it as some sort of Mass Effect Metroid fusion, but this is close enough.

I really like the concept. It sounds different enough from Minecraft that I can imagine myself playing it without getting the urge to close and boot up Minecraft instead.

This game could be amazing if it delivers.

First I was going to post something snarky like, "Which game will this one be ripping-off?"

Then I saw the screenshots and thought, "Wow, looks a lot like a more visually impressive Terraria."

But then I read the details... and I'm sold, assuming impressions are good. Terraria is a fantastic game despite being a completely shameless 2D clone of Minecraft, so I assume it will be awesome.

1. "Procedurally generated" anything is an instant attention-grabber for me.
2. I definitely like the art style of this one more than Terraria.

Yeah, I've always had a baseless but nagging suspicion that Terraria contains heavily modified RPG Maker (PC version) sprites. I've always gotten that feeling looking at and playing it.

Probably because it literally used stolen FF sprites before release, and the edited versions are still pretty similar. Not RPG Maker specifically, but definitely a sprite set that appeared in untold thousands of RPG Maker games over the years.

Sort of like how in those Graal Online games, they're all serious about making them original IPs and banning user-created content ripped from other things, yet half the "original" sprites they use for their own content are Link to the Past edits.

I am not at all surprised to hear that. Terraria is a great game, and some of the greatest games/series in existence are clones of other games (like Streets of Rage)... but, that said, Terraria is really, really shameless about it.

Was so excited when I saw this thread, Terraria was one of my favourite games of 2011. But then I saw those jiggling breasts and canceled my pre-order.

I really really dislike the art in Terraria, and this game looks only marginally more appealling, but I really really want to play this game if it is all like that description.

"Same artist as Terraria" isn't enough to get me excited, considering the art was the (only) thing in Terraria I didn't rate, but interested definitely I am.

The guy who did the art for Terraria is the designer on this; he has other people doing the art, as near as I can tell from their site.

So can anyone explain what exactly happened with the other Terraria developers? The whole thing is really confusing.

Blue was mostly a producer/bug fixer who disappeared for personal reasons.

Re-Logic is taking a vacation because he's having a child, so Tiy is the only one who is still active right now.

The plan is for Terraria to continue as well though when Re-Logic comes back.

Totally missed this announcement. Makes me feel a little better about the continuing development of Terraria being abandoned.

Can't wait for this. Wow.

I never did sit down and try and play Terraria. Love the theme of this game, though. I'll buy this too. I'll maybe even try and play this one:)

It's a really interesting article with summarizes what we know about the game so far. It definitely sounds similar but yet very different from Terraria, especially in terms of narrative and scope.

Some interesting points I particularly liked, there are a TON more at the link though:

Net Code

- “Our test server is running on a terrible connection and we’ve had around 10 people in with zero troubles”

- “Latency is pretty well handled at the moment; I play with a friend from Australia and I’m in the UK”

NPC Escort Quests

- “There are times you will have to actively carry NPCs off of a planet with your hands full, so you won’t be able to use your guns. Your friends will really need to help you”

Weapons

- “The game even procedurally generates the graphic used for the guns, right now there are 21,000 different visual styles for rocket launcher. Then, each of those styles can be coloured individually. By release time, there will be many, many more; that’s just for rocket launcher”

- You can use any weapon you find but can only manufacture ammo for a researched weapon – “that lets us place things at key locations for missions and set pieces”

Building/Crafting

- There will be a UFO attached to the player’s home world which can be used to pick up and place NPC’s, as well as terraform on a large scale

- There will be tiers of crafting – “most of it will be done via the manufacturing facility on the station, which will reflect the various tiers of crafting, i.e. it will have levels”

Monster companions

- You will be able to capture enemies, take them around with you and train them to fight for you (think Pokemon)

- “We wanted to keep the monster system relatively simple to start with. Most monsters can be trained to use ranged/melee attacks, some can be taught to fly or swim. They have inbuilt stats like defense, attack damage, speed, etc that will increase with kills”

Quest/Story

- Story missions take place on pre-generated worlds “hand crafted for specific gameplay – we want some really good platforming/combat gameplay during the missions”

- “Quests” are different from story-based “missions”, quests will take place on random planets

Mission Editor

- “We’re looking for a really easy way for players to create their own missions, in the engine”

- There will be an in-game mission editor, that you can use with your friends (think Little Big Planet)

- Created missions will be playable online

Steamworks

- If it happens, Steam release will come with Steam support, Steam friends, achievements etc

It really does look like some of the things they wanted to do in Terraria is going to be used in this game. In any case, w/ the current state of Terraria, I'm just going to unofficially acknowledge this as Terraria 2. :p

I'm guessing that where those Deathstroke and Superman outfits in the OP come from. Dat user generated copyrighted material.
