The Formula 1 2012 Season |OT| The Year of the...uh...Platypus?

I think assuming Ferarri had a word with Sauber is reasonable.

However, to think that Perez ran wide because of the already aired radio message is stupid. We all heard it - he could have backed off if he wanted to. He could have easily span/ended in the gravel and I don't think he'd ever risk it. Furthermore, why would he? The radio message probably just interrupted his rhythm.

Really hope Perez doesn't take the Ferrari seat. Better to be a big fish in a small pond, than a small fish in a big pond, eh?

Great race overall. I somehow missed how Button and Massa were at 16/17 for most of the race. Maybe I fell asleep.

Yeah, I honestly think Perez was going for that win. He could easily have ended up in the gravel, so it was no forced mistake.

Looks like Vettel may have lost a few fans with his temperament today. Gotta say I definitely think less highly of him now :/

There's already two opposite comments on my vid of it. I expect a full on argument soon!

It doesn't change my view of him. He was angry, shit happens. He's also probably frustrated he's not had the performance of last year yet. It's a shame, but it happens.

Bad day for us in the Sub-league competition, down to 13th overall.

If he wants to further his career and actually be in the position for a title hunt, where else would he go?

Yeah but moving to a team in disarray is maybe not the best way to advance his career.

No worse than Lewis' monkey backmarkers comment.

You may be pissed after such a bad race, i'm ok with this. But there is no excuse for disrespectful behaviour & comments. Flashing the middle finger? Calling Karthikeyan an idiot? Come on Mr Vettel....

What a shame Perez was told that the team needed that position, just before he had the 'misfortune' to go wide on that turn. But I guess if he wants to take Massa's seat this or next year he better get used to Ferrari team orders.

People actually thinking Perez faked an accident is just beyond ridiculous.

Oh, also, as much as Sky sucks, did anyone else LOVE their parade lap?

The music and the way they had quick snippets from the drivers was awesome. Really got me hyped. I think that was a great addition. I didn't notice it for Australia, maybe because I was half asleep? I don't think they did it then, though.

And you don't fake a mistake/accident in autosport by going over a wet curb intentionally unless you're an idiot.

Seriously.

Schumacher did the exact same thing and that worked out pretty well for all involved.

Ferrari will sort themselves out. A few bad years there will end up being worth it if he can fight for the championship further down the line. Realistically there isn't going to be a free seat at Red Bull (Vergne or Ricciardo will replace Webber if he leaves) or McLaren.

They've been grooming him for a while and clearly see him as a future Ferrari driver. The likes of Red Bull, McLaren and Merc all have drivers the're grooming or in McLaren's case already have a stable driver line-up. There's no other top tier team he can hope to go to.

And this Ferrari are still a lot more competent than the Ferrari of the eighties and early nineties.

I've never seen an F1 driver NOT give some the finger / call another driver a wanker / flash all sorts of hand gestures.

Seriously, you could probably pull video on pretty much every single F1 driver today doing that at some point in their career. These are highly competitive people who are full of adrenaline in a high pressure situation. Some do it far more than others though (Alonso and Webber spring to mind).

The comments are of course another story.

Just watching the build up I missed this morning and got to this point. It is pretty similar to what 5live used to do on the parade lap, maybe Crofty brought the idea with him.

He certainly let himself and his fans down just as Lewis did with his comments.

Perez recognised that was already running on the edge so he failed, not because the added pressure neither from Ferrari to Sauber nor Sauber themselves.

As some has said before, he could have ended easily in the gravel. Slowing down would have been much easier and riskyless. After all, he ended +2.XXX to Fernando, even losing time.

Psychotext, is not nearly the same making hand gestures to showing the middle finger. Not even close.

Suggesting that Perez went off the track to please Ferrari is just silly.

If he wanted to avoid passing Alonso he would just have started to break a bit earlier and driven with bigger margins. Then after the race he and Sauber could have said that the the tires were going away.

You don't go off the track like that on purpose. He could have lost it over the curb/artificial grass and he didn't know the grip off the track. The risk of beaching it in the gravel is just to big.

Edit: Same thing already said above...

I don't think it was a Ferrari-order. Conditions were very tricky and it could have ended in tears for both of him (just look at the error he made, he almost ended up in the gravel).

I also don't think Peter Sauber is that kind of guy :D

Where are you from? Because in the UK they're pretty much all equivalent. In fact, I'd be more offended at being called a wanker I reckon.

What makes the "middle finger" so special to you?

From Spain. The middle finger in Spain is the equivalent to the "V"? (I don't know how do you call that) in UK.

Shaking hands it's just "I'm very upset". Middle finger is "I'm angry and fuck you". Quite a difference ^^

Could have done without the music but the snippets were alright.

Disagree. I fucking hate it. And it was in Aus.

Apparently I've lost a metric fuck-tonne of points on F1RM, I'm not even in the top 50 any more and I was 37 after last week. Wish I could check the site but it's slow as balls.

Not seen it, but is this basically what 5Live did/do?

Not really. In the UK, I'd argue that people regard the middle finger as *nastier* than the v-sign... but still not deeply offensive.

And this is why everyone secretly wishes that you'd leave this thread. You're a terrible loser.

+1

But Karthikeyan was already out of Vettel's way. I need to see it again but I remember Vettel cutting across Karthikeyan when he had the entire width of the track at his disposal. The puncture was no one's fault but his own.

Yes. Think Lewis passing Kobayashi at Spa last year. Same type of incident.

I meant more the incessant critique. After the incident having to answer the questions of 'is he still as good', having to yield to Alonso as a team mate during a period of trying to rebuild himself. Being completely outclassed by Alonso consistently and having to deal with equally consistent terrible calls from his side of the garage. Then just falling further back down the field as a whole. Just last year alone his on track altercations with Lewis and some other drivers coupled with the media attention on both him and Ferrari for not delivering really showed a shift. He seemed to always come out worse off and his blame game behaviour didn't help with getting him back on track, he became increasingly irritable and vocal. I think just a lot of smaller and relatively mild issues have spun out of control with him and it's gotten to a point where there is simply too much for him to do to be redeemed. There are limits to everyone's abilities and expectations on Massa won't match up with where he is now because there's simply too much to tackle now. /

That was a pretty level headed analysis of events in Massas universe, good post

Great race once they came back from the red flag. Happy that Alonso won even though I was kinada hoping to see Perez win, which would have been amazing. Lots of great overtakes and good results. Should be a fantastic season.

I think you'll find that I'm one of Lewis' greatest supporters at least in this thread, but his comments were uncalled for and simply crass. He did apologise though, off the record.

Lewis' comment was clearly tongue-in-cheek, though. Surprised you didn't get it... Maybe the UK humour too sophisticated?
