jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
A comic shop opened up in my miserable small ass town, and everything that is good in me is telling me that I should support one of the few things this shit hole has going for it.

That said...

..I haven't followed comics since the Age of Apocalypse series (Which I am told is actually being done again? Irony?) Anyway, I picked up Schism and Re-Genesis... and, well.. I thought it was bad. Keeping in mind I am coming into the X universe almost completely blind now, but it just seemed like cheap, shoddy writing. Like, fanfic bad.

So, I ask: What should I pick up? I read that Whedon did a run on X-Men, should I start there? Help me ComicsGAF, you're my yadda, yadda.

don't read super hero comics. there is one really good super hero comic (wolverine & the x-men), though. it's about 7 issues in so if you can nab those, you're good to go. no need to really know anything beforehand.

The comic 'saga' has only one issue out and it's sure to be brilliant.

also see if they have the locke & key trades. so good

SLOTT did an amazing event. Unfortunately that was the only good one in some time. :(

I got halfway through Spider Island and stopped reading, I could not stand the writing at all. It's just so jokey and full of asides that it was distracting, and the villains were ridiculous if (like me) you weren't a longtime Spider-fan. On the other hand though, I can see that the writing style is kinda similar to that jocular Stan Lee style, but I can't stand it.

I know some long time Spider-man fans that hated Spider-Island but I loved it (Hardcore spidey fan) but I can see where folks wouldn't find it enjoyable.

Marvel events tend to be MEH, not a big fan of events themselves but hoping this one delivers. If anything it's the end of Bendis' run on Avengers which is good news since he's been out of steam for awhile.

I don't think it's the greatest of titles but I met Selwyn Seyfu Hinds last week writer of DOMINIQUE LAVEAU: VOODOO and he was a totally chill, awesome dude. If you have a chance you should totally check out the first issue.

I did, and really didn't like it. It just seemed like they'd thrown so much into the first issue and nothing really stuck - the endless cod-Cajun narration, the disjointed chronology, and the only characters that really said anything were in a constant state of panic so everything was all on one level.

I like the idea of a voodoo heroine but I think I was looking for something a bit more slow burn, perhaps? Something a bit more Gabriel Knight-esque, perhaps, rather than RAAAR MONSTER and loas and people's heads getting chopped off etc.

In my experience, you can't go home again.

When I was in grade school and early high school I loved the X-Men.

Now, every time I try going back things are so far removed, so "different" (while remaining the same), and just generally butt.

I'd suggest looking around the shop - see what looks interesting to you and go from there.

I agree about whedon.

ViewtifulJC may be on to something. Gamebit and Northstar are in the new Astonishing X-Men run.

I was going to buy it because I like Marjorie Liu as a writer, but I can't buy a book with Gamebit in it.

I totally agree the first issue was a mess but the dude spoke with a lot of passion and is putting a lot into it, so I'm going to give it a couple of issues.

AvX #1 was pretty darn good, I thought. Bendis dialed back on a lot of his usual terrible dialog tics, and the story already has more heart and character then all of Fear Itself(sorry Birdie). The conflict is around this big Phoenix Force, but the heart of it really comes between the disagreement of two army leaders, Captain America and Steve Rogers. They have such a firm stance in their beliefs, and it creates this emotional tension that Fear Itself just didn't have. There's hard choices and consequences for all the actions in this issue, and I really can't wait to see how it all pans out. And best of all, Bendis isn't writing the next 6 issues! Wheeeeeeeee!

Oh, and Romita Jr hasn't looked this good since his ASM run with JMS. The secret is(as it was with the JMS run) those Scott Hanna inks. I know its blasphemy to insist anyone is a better fit for Romita then Klaus Jenson, but Hanna just makes his work look better. Everything is so much cleaner and tighter then his recent Avengers work. I'm excited to see his work on the next four issues. And arguably Marvel's best colorist Laura Martin is on-board for all 12 issues, working her magic.

So yeah, I'm down for this event so far. I really hope it all pans out right.

WOW!

I have to completely disagree. It's been a week since I've read it but totally left a sour taste in my mouth. I thought the art was lackluster and it moved a glacial pace. I love JRJR but the art just wasn't there. I'll reread it on Sat but hey, glad you loved it.

It's important for the industry for this to succeed.

Whedon's run is pretty great, also, there is an ongoing you might like called Wolverine and the X-Men. It's probably my favorite ongoing series.

Also, for fans of AoA, the Uncanny X-Force run by Rick Remender is an absolute MUST READ.

I thought I was the only one that didn't like Spider-Island, for some reason I've never been a big fan of Slott's writing on Spider-Man.

Ha, I posted almost the exact same thing this morning. Brofist!

I'd say you'd be in the minority there. But then again, you admit you don't like what makes Spidey great.

Either way, it was heads and tails better than Fear Itself, World War Hulk, and Siege <spit>.

Well, you don't see Al Gore getting punched out by Spider-Man every day

Al Gore is probably the Chameleon, is my guess. It's more dramatic(and funny!) when they don't explain it immediately, so it's Spidey punching a politician.

Well I do like some Spidey, big fan of the Ultimate run, that's my Spidey and it's still quip-tacular. I just found Slott's writing too... pally? Like everyone was best mates and they were all spouting in jokes and none of them were very funny.

I did read the Cloak and Dagger mini and that was great, Emma Rios is really something special.

But really, events in general are rarely well executed. Far too scattershot and self important with very little in the way of actual drama or story.

Also, those Spidey pages above are properly WTF inducing. It's embarrassing.

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"
They use real world locations. I don't see the big deal.

that may be true, but lets not pretend our worlds are similar despite being as such. it felt wierd when they did the 9-11 issues too(but since the majority of 616 takes place in marvel, i guess its necessary) but what reasons are there to include real world figures in storylines?

you must not like marvel because they do it all the time.

the obama shit? bendis sneaking his bald head into new avengers? yup, all that shit can go.

Can we just pretend Uncanny X-force 20-23 didn't happen. Horrid art on top of a story that was all over the place and that I didn't care about. Save us Opena, bring us back to the holy land.

.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Glad that... unpleasant arc of Uncanny X-Force is over. That was all not good, both story and completely whacked out art. Hopefully gets back on track from here, I've missed it as the highlight of any given comic book day :/

Dan

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
This is actually what I hate the most about Marvel. It's one major reason I like DC more.
Yeah, seeing Marvel try to incorporate 9/11 and Obama into their world is just fucking bizarre. It's just way too messy and desperate for attention.

I picked up Wolverine and the X-Men 1-4, X-Men vs Avengers 0, and Uncanny X-force.

I'd suggest looking around the shop - see what looks interesting to you and go from there.

You are exactly right. Everything is as you said. Prof. X is powerless and walking about. Logan is a member of every team ever, and has children. Cyclops is with the White Queen, while some child is running Hellfire Club. Magneto answers to Cyclops, and there is apparently only 200 muntants left on the planet.

So much shit has changed.

I did actually look around the shop, and it was honestly dazing. So much to select from (with much of it being familiar, but so very different.) I wanted to pick up this Grendel collection, but sadly it was marked up beyond my interests.

Aside from that though, Uncanny X-Force is really good as far as I have gotten into it. I am just about to get to the Dark Angel Saga (so 11 issues in?) And I am still hungry for more, mainly because, like I said I left off reading comics at Age of Apocalypse, and the series is foreshadowing AoA being evolved with the plot in next few books. Convenient.

Overall, I am happy with what I have picked up.

Thank you guys for the suggestions. Feels good man.

Midtown comics in new york sure is nice. Visited ot kill time b/t buses and bought Unknown soldier v1 to read on the bus. I rather liked it. Also just ordered unwritten vol 2 off amazon. feels good. Now i just have to stare longingly at hickman's ff trades, and more volumes of Unknown soldier, and thelast few vols of sandman i dont have, and all those batman trades i don't own, and and and and......

no thanks. im a physical copy guy. I spend 15 hours a day working on a computer screen, the last thing I want to do is move my hobbies over to another digital screen.

LiQuid!

I proudly and openly admit to wishing death upon the mothers of people I don't like
I know everybody bitches about Marvel double shipping books but I wish they would quintuple ship WatXM. :(

Caught up on my big ass pile of neglected DC books for this month. Holy shit @ Issue 7 of Demon Knights. Dat art and dem duels! So much action. Huge payoff for one of my favorite comics. I shouldn't have waited this long to read it.

Green Lantern was great this month too but most of the stuff I read from DC was somewhere between "alright" and "why do I still buy this?"
