EDIT: From Bleeding Cool this morning: Dan Didio celebrates one decade of being a DC Comics exec

In the article he lists the 10 "high points" of his tenure at DC. In chronological order they are:
-Batman #608, the "Hush" storyline by Loeb/Lee
-Identity Crisis by Meltzer/Morales
-Superman/Batman #8, the "Supergirl" storyline by Loeb/Turner
-Countdown to Infinite Crisis, the $1 anthology comic
-Superman: Earth One by Straczynski/Davis

Well since we're coming up on the end of the month and some books I originally picked got Satchwar'd, I figure I'd post what the OT would have looked like sans bizarre editorial choices:

These are books involving female characters I have enjoyed over the years for various reasons.

Batman: Thrillkiller

57N7A.gif

gaw9d.gif

In this Elseworlds tale, Bruce Wayne's parents were murdered by their own servants and poor Bruce was left with nothing. He sold his only possession, his house, to Barbara Gordon, who had earned a fortune off her murdered mother's insurance. Bruce entered the force and became a decorated detective while Babs went the Batman route. Only recently did she acquire the man wonder known as Robin. To further spin things on its head, the Joker is a woman, a cold-hearted self-professed bitch named Blanca Steeplechase. It only gets weirder.

Battle Axes

She is challenged by Gunnar, a warrior who wants to get rid of the tradition of training women to fight and institute Christianity as the tribe’s dominant religion. Cavewoman

fIQHq.gif

The story of Cavewoman is rooted deeply in science fiction.
Meriem Cecilbie Cooper is born in July 1980 to parents Robert Addam Cooper and Gail Nicole Reicher, in the town of Marshville, Oregon. After Robert dies of unknown causes, Gail turns to drugs, which leads her to fall in with an unsavory group of men. Eventually wanting to sever her ties with this group for Meriem's sake, Gail seeks the help of Meriem's scientist-inventor grandfather, Francis Peacock Reicher, affectionately called "Gramp." After first being thwarted, Gramp makes a mysteriously superhuman return, defeating the men easily and taking Meriem away on a hovercycle from the future.

At Gramp's laboratory, Meriem discoveres a time machine and a body-enhancing device that allows a living being to pass through the time stream. It is here that she first meets Klyde, Gramp's 15-foot-tall lab gorilla who has been accidentally altered by the body enhancer. Gramp then enhances Meriem as well, and the trio begins an ongoing adventure through time while on the run from dinosaurs and a secret branch of the government.

As events transpire, Gramp is written out of the story when he is killed by a Tyrannosaurus and Meriem stayed far from the cave that they settled down in. After a fierce fight with local carnivores near the "Quasi-Birds" nests, Meriem ended up naked when her clothes were torn off during the fight. Upon aging into a buxom 19-year-old, Meriem had lived in the local jungles naked (minus her hunting weapons), savage, happy, and free. Dinosaurs were taught to fear her. Meriem reunited with Klyde, who attacked her and broke her weapons. She then returned to the cave where she and Gramps had settled down. Not wanting to be naked and savage anymore, she eventually made a jungle bikini (with dinosaur teeth hanging on the strings) out of a leopard-printed snakeskin blanket. She also avenged her grandfather by slaying the Tyrannosaurus responsible for killing him, but rescued two Tyrannosaurus hatchlings from Velociraptors. One that was named Harmony became Meriem's companion while one named Peace became her enemy.

Later, the whole town of Marshville is transported into a prehistoric past.

Elseworld's Finest: Supergirl & Batgirl

It is based in a world in which Bruce Wayne was never Batman, and the infant Kal-El did not survive long enough to become Superman. The orphaned Barbara Gordon becomes Gotham's near-dictatorial protector, and Kara Zor-El as the Girl of Steel teams with Lex Luthor and the Justice Society.

Empowered

PSR91.jpg

Not only is costumed crimefighter "Empowered" saddled with a less-than-ideal superhero name, but she wears a skintight and cruelly revealing "supersuit" that only magnifies her body-image insecurities. Worse yet, the suit's unreliable powers are prone to failure, repeatedly leaving her in appallingly distressing situations . . . and giving her a shameful reputation as the lamest "cape" in the masks-and-tights business. Nonetheless, she pluckily braves the ordeals of her bottom-rung superheroic life with the help of her "thugalicious" boyfriend (and former Witless Minion) and her hard-drinking ninja girlfriend, not to mention the supervillainous advice from the caged alien demonlord watching DVDs from atop her coffee table . . .

Hotwire

il0qy.jpg

Ghosts. The cities of the future have grown ankle-deep in them as they graze off the electromagnetic waste of a billion wireless Internet connections. Most can only drift, witless and lost. Rarely, though, something comes through with enough marbles to cause real trouble. And that's where Alice Hotwire, Detective Exorcist, comes in. -Sauce

Kill Your Boyfriend

jkz4M.gif

A British schoolgirl yearning for excitement joins up with an angry rebel boy intent on tearing down middle-class England. Through their violent, anti-authority joyride – filled with sex, drugs, and anarchy – Morrison offers a scathing, often-hilarious take on the British suburban landscape, where edgy behavior provides an escape from sanity.

Lorna Relic Wrangler

gK6aY.gif

Lorna Relic Wrangler is a collection of four short stories starring Lorna a young blond bombshell that's ½ Lara Croft from Tomb Raider and ½ Indiana Jones and maybe a dash of National Treasure. Her first adventure shows her preparing for her first mission. As she warms up it becomes clear that her "superiors" are checking out the free show as Lorna leans and stretches in her tank top and cut off jean shorts. One thing becomes clear quickly, Lorna is a knock out. Once she's completed her training she's ready for the real deal, but this time she's not letting her perverted superiors peek at her.

Lorna's mission is anything but simple. She must run a course starting at the capitol building going to Washington's monument. From there she must take the very tip of the monument and run with it back to the capitol building. She'll then insert it into the roof of the building and prevent another dimension from opening. This is all to prevent black magic that was inserted into the country by the British before leaving the states. As Lorna prepares to leave for her mission she runs into her arch enemy, Posh Meow. -Sauce

Love & Rockets

BkSKs.gif

Twenty years gone, and Jaime Hernandez’ Las Locas have lost none of their charm: Maggie still struggles with her waistline, Hopey still lives in full-rebellion mode, Penny Century (as seen in her own book) remains an emotionally adrift bombshell, and Izzy, as ever, is at war both with depression and herself.

None of which should suggest that these characters haven’t experienced believable evolution over the last two decades. Indeed, each has aged as gracefully on the page as their prodigal creator has off of it. -Sauce

Many Worlds of Tesla Strong, The

KUvDy.jpg

Tesla Strong is the daughter of the Tom Strong, the premiere super-hero of Millennium City; and when her father’s educated ape friend, King Solomon, hops on a dimension-jumping, Kirby-esque surfboard and disappears, it’s up to young Tesla to search the multiverse for him. Her journey brings her into contact with many different versions of herself and her renowned family: some good (Tori Strong), some evil (Twyla Strong), and some…well…naked (Tamla Strong). In true Silver Age fashion – for such is the spirit of creator Alan Moore’s America’s Best Comics imprint, Tesla’s adventures on multiple earths lead to a cosmic crisis that must be averted. -Sauce

Medieval Spawn / Witchblade

oPZ9t.gif

Remember, too, that back in 1996, "Garth Ennis" wasn't even an adjective yet. He was a foreign star still on the ascent in the American market, doing Preacher, soon to be doing Hitman, not even close to Punisher. He did the first six issues of The Darkness, which spun off from Witchblade during that brief, bizarre moment when Witchblade was one of the hottest titles in all of comicdom. He also did this: Medieval Spawn / Witchblade, a team-up crossover that on first glance is just bizarre, and on second glance is still bizarre but telling as an ancestor of Ennis's current output. -Sauce

Monkeyman & O'Brien

bHu1p.jpg

What do you get when you mix the beautiful daughter of a brilliant scientist with an extra-dimensional radiation bath? You get Anne O'Brien, half of the dimension-hopping, monster-battling team of Monkeyman & O'Brien! Together, this super-intelligent gorilla and this uber-woman are the only things standing between the people of earth and the menace of living gargoyles, frogs from space, and the Shrewmanoid and his army of monsters! To put it succinctly, they're two rays of hope in a world gone mad! Join Art Adams for nonstop, eye-popping action in this science-fiction adventure.

Orchid

Delve into the first chapter of Orchid, the tale of a teenage prostitute who learns that she is more than the role society has imposed upon her.

She-Hulk / Thing: The Long Night

mrSHH.gif

In THE LONG NIGHT, very old Marvel villains Dr. Jonas Harrow and corporate baddies Roxxon are conspiring together to resurrect another old adversary, the android known as Dragon Man. They hope to fabricate a new army of synthezoid (Harrow's term, not mine) for Roxxon's nefarious purposes. And what are those, exactly? Does Roxxon plan to man all of its pumping stations with synthetic attendants, thus throwing the entire world into chaos? These gas companies are pure evil, aren't they? Ooh.

She-Hulk and the Thing are taking the subway for a change, while deep below them Lord Bonham and his followers (no idea, sorry) are about to emerge and feast on the living. - Sauce

She Dragon

rw2Wy.gif

She-Dragon finds herself stranded into Dimension X, courtesy the seemingly magical, limitless powers of the annoying Mr. Glum. She soon discovers there's plenty of life in the bizarre world that Mr. Glum once called home, but the locals ain't all that friendly. She-Dragon ends up being enslaved, forced into a life of back-breaking labor in the service of a brutal warlord. Of course, it doesn't take long for said warlord to take notice of her bust size, and he finds a new kind of enslaved service for her to fulfill. Meanwhile, Dragon's son Malcolm, Angel and a few other kids find themselves lost in Dimension X as well. - Sauce

Strangers in Paradise

rcz56.jpg

The story primarily concerns the difficult relationship between two women, Helen Francine Peters (known simply as Francine) and Katina Marie ("Katchoo") Choovanski, and their friend David Qin. Francine considers Katchoo her best friend; Katchoo is in love with Francine. David is in love with Katchoo (a relationship which Katchoo herself is deeply confused about).

This plays itself out over a second plot element, a thriller style story concerning the shadowy 'Big Six' organization. Its leader is a woman named Darcy Parker, who uses highly trained women (of whom Katchoo was one) to infiltrate—and to an extent control—the American political system. It uses a non-linear approach to storytelling, putting in sequence elements of the story often years apart, and going back in time frequently.

Tales of the Witchblade

BaWob.jpg

O345Y.jpg

OTBDE.jpg

This is a nine issue series that looks at the Witchblade through the ages. We get Pirate Witchblade. Mayan Witchblade. Medieval Witchblade. Egyptian Witchblade. And a few others here and there. This was a fun little series that ends with a crossover with Tomb Raider. You could probably skip the 9th issue as it focuses on Sarah Pezzini Witchblade and not a cool ancient times Witchblade.

St. Patrick’s Day reading:

Strangers in Paradise is goooood and Milk and Cheese is awesome.

I don't understand that Supergirl quote. I like the old one from when I was little and loved Peter David one. This new one he brought back was on and off bleh and when she got better and started getting really good he rebooted it. I just want to call him an asshole I guess. I hate when I see him and whichever Marvel guy talking, I shouldn't read it.
Fucking assholes

Now I can post all of the saccharine Wonder/Bat shipping material I want and no one can stop me! NO ONE! Muaahahahahahahahahaaa!!! >:D

That's not evil emanating from meeee! ^_^

Great. Now it's just a bunch of creepy dudes in here talking about funnily dressed superladies.

:( Sorry you have to go.

The guys are funnily dressed too.

At least they're not worst dressed like Juri. ^_^

Is The Pro still in print? I always wanted to check it out cuz I love Amanda Conner's art

Need to complete the Golden year on the series.

avx looks pretty bad... hopefully it doesn't mess with the only marvel title i read right now (wolverine & the x-men).

Just read More Than Meets the Eye 1-3.

I'm enjoying this more than Robots in Disguise; but I'm a bit put off how all the characters share very similar personalities and dialogue. A lot of the characters have that snarky, always witty one-upper attitude of a lot of young people.

It's more annoying than endearing.

The writer really needs to look into writing different character voices.

ready for more blasphemy? i'm gonna drop batman new 52. i loved snyders run on detective comics but this new batman court of owls doesn't really do anything for me. plus they're doing one of this big cross over events about it and i can never keep track of those.

i did start reading chew, though. very funny stuff and great art to boot.

You only have to read Snyder's Batman issues to follow Night of the Owls. All the other tie-ins just show what the rest of the Bat-family were doing when the owls were going mental.

Speaking of Powergirl, Kotobukiya just announced a Bishoujo line figure:

Bishoujo-Power-Girl-Concept_1332783305.jpg

I have a question - if you buy one of these, you pretty much have to crack one out over it, right? Otherwise what's the point? I mean, it's expensive, it has boobs... gotta get your money's worth after all.

G'wan, glaze that statue, that dirty, dirty statue...

And this is what happens when Satchy leaves us. I degenerate into encouraging perversity.

However there are also collectors and I do not want to ruin the after market value of my toys and statues.

So, what's coming out today that would be a good jumping on point?

I would suggest what has worked for decades.

Walk into a shop.

Find something that catches your eye.

Go from there.

Publishers should not need to always cater to readers who can't deal with something that has existed for decades. Although Marvel and DC do their damnedest.

Thinking more about the statues and figures, and for me it's like comics. If it's by an artist / sculptor / studio whose work I enjoy, and it's a character I like - I'll buy it. If not. No.

At some point I need to purchase that Dragon bust before it becomes even harder to find. :(

Got to say, I loved the endings to Secret Avengers and FF this week. Uncanny X-Force had a good resolution but I am really looking forward to the next issue just based on Phil Noto's teaser image.

AvsX #0 was a waste, which I guess shouldn't be a surprise. Anybody else thinking about going to Midtown Comics for the signing event for AvsX #1 next week?

Like for anything?

Maybe Avenging spider man? it's a team up book featuring spider man and this new arc has Steve Rogers!

Yeah, for anything. Right now I'm thinking about:

AxX #0
Avengers #241
Fantastic Four #16
Astonishing X-Men #48
Captain America #628
DareDevil #10

How does that look?

Didn't see this posted here. The Toronto Star had an interesting interview Cebulski, talent coordinator at Marvel, and the journo posted the unedited interview (over lunch, Cebulski is a well known foodie) on his blog

http://porkosity.blogspot.ca/2012/03/fed-122-comic-scout-cb-cebulski.html

Talks about double shipping, piracy etc.

GREAT interview. Very revealing. They really are releasing mini-serieses under the same title and calling them regular serieses.

I'm not against Mags joining the X-men under the leadership of Cyclops, no x-man would follow him. I just think it's out of character him being so cooperative. There's no tension, he just blindly follows Cyclops.

One of the few times I though he was acting on character was when he found out about X-Force and asked/blackmailed Logan into killing that nazi guy who tortured his family. That's the real Magneto right there!
Wait, when did that happen?! (title/issue?)

The "Epic Bat-Fail" line was the last straw for you too, eh?

i don't know, the whole story doesn't seem special in anyway. if i'm going to read a super hero book (like watxm) it's gotta do something interesting. i stopped reading invincible, too - the book just drags on now.

i think i'm just tired of ongoing series'. the "perpetual second act" thing gets to me, especially after reading so many wonderful closed-ended comics over the years. i even grow tired of fables.

thankfully there are some awesome new stuff to keep me satisfied:
chew
locke and key
saga
peter panzerfaust
wolverine and the x-men (so long as bachalo does more art than bradshaw)

i still need to start unwritten but people keep recommending it to me so i will get there.

Yeah, for anything. Right now I'm thinking about:

AxX #0
Avengers #241
Fantastic Four #16
Astonishing X-Men #48
Captain America #628
DareDevil #10

Well it's my personal bias but i am not really enjoying the avengers right now, if you're gonna get anything get Secret Avengers. Marvel does recap pages so it shouldn't be that hard to follow.

not sure about Captain america or Astonishing but Daredevil and FF are in the middle of an arc.

Aquaman #7 is a new arc, and i'm really enjoying it so maybe check that out
