Gunslinger Girls 03 - END
I'm so glad the "cost saving" techniques of Episode 2 was an anomoly, overall it was a good show, an insight into turning little girls into weapons who are ultimately still little girls, and the different ways the girls were treated by their handlers to differing results, the way the girls blushed was utilised in a way that made them look very affectionate towards their handlers in an effective manner without giving off an excessively outwardly emotional expression on their face, I can't remember the last time blush was used this way instead of usual perma blush on every part of the female anatomy and the moe moe kyun variety.
This only makes me very very scared of the comparison shots for season 2, maybe I should let sleeping dogs lie.

The first episode was character drama, not "hard" sci-fi. I assume more science will appear when Mutta starts his astronaut training, but we'll have to see. The setting is very-near-future, and seems to be aiming for what could realistically happen by 2025 (if space agencies were properly supported). I think you'd like it.
BRS was probably more entertaining.
There's no space travel/sci-fi yet. Mostly about leaving regrets behind to pursue true bro-love, so it's all about character-building.
Sounds like a show i might enjoy.

Speaking of hard sci fi, is there anything else out there like Planates? I'm going to be watching Space Bros in hopes of scratching that itch even a little bit, but I'd love more.

This episode chronicles the story of four female friends who all go the same school. I cant remember their names, but you dont really need to. The red-headed lead character is passionate, the blonde is restrained and aloof, pink haired girl is quiet and the one with dark-green hair is normal. There are other people in the show, but you know they arent important because they only have brown hair.
Set Up
I might be wrong about some of these girls personalities, but as they werent developed in this opening episode I have to work with what I got. Apparently they all used to go to this really bland looking rock (hereafter referred to as the Wishing Rock) and wish that theyd all go on to be idols together. Then they stopped because, er, I dont know. It wasnt covered. I guess they grew up?
Story
Flash forward to the present and these girls all go the same the school. Except now their perfect lives have been disrupted Red and Yellow had a falling out over tennis! How will Pink and Green resolve such a crisis? Even worse,
Will friendship survive such upheaval and trauma?
Nobody cares, least of all the audience, because we havent really been introduced to these characters, so any crisis they might have completely fails to resonate with us because were not invested in their lives. Compare and contrast with Oniisama E where a crisis of friendship occurs a few episodes into the show, once weve become attached to the characters. Having such an incident occur this early on is pointless and ineffective.
Nevertheless, a scheme is hatched to bring Red and Yellow back together, using the power of the Wishing Rock. Together, they all make a wish and
. Apparently this is really boring, as no-one looks or sounds remotely excited. Afterwards, Yellow stomps off as if nothing ever happened. The end.

Ive already hinted at the problems with this episode, but just to reiterate: This show apparently stars very boring clichéd characters that are poorly written. Nothing that they do is interesting or endearing. Its extremely bland and forgettable on every level.
I dont really know what the director was trying to do with episode either. There wasnt a single scene where a mood or tone was established. Its not just the absence of Secret Base, its the inability of the visuals to convey any kind of emotion, coupled with that bland script. It didnt help that the pacing was kind of poor either, with a couple of scenes going on far longer than they needed to we got the point about two minutes ago.
Boring visuals
To give you an example of this show fails on a visual level, Ill just talk about this shot:
This is supposed to be a key scene in the episode a powerful confrontation between two good friends. Now, ignoring the fact that we havent established why these people are friends (because thats a problem with the writing, not the visuals) there are plenty of other problems here:
- The camera is situated as if the characters are performing on some kind of stage and were viewing them from the side-on. This is extremely lazy camera positioning, clearly done either because they have no budget or talent.
- The camera isnt particularly close to the subjects. This separates us (the audience) from their discussion.
- The frame has no depth to it, making it look flat and boring.
- Pink and Green are standing still as robots, arms perfectly to the side with no indication that they know or care whats going on. As this scene is shot from the side it doesnt even look like theres an eyeline match with these girls they appear to be starting vacantly into space. These four girls are supposed to be good friends!
All these combine to make the shot completely ineffective in conveying the mood of this scene to the audience.
To summarize:
There characters aren't established in this episode, but the show acts like we care about them anyway.
The little that we learn about the characters is boring.

The cinematography and editing is very, very bland.

Not sure how I feel about Chibodee's childhood trauma that causes him to be afraid of clowns or how poorly he handles it. Can't really hate on getting a song from Rain though. How ruthless his opponent was in pressuring him on it was pretty good though.
One would also think the kids added to the show would have been extraneous but they're used rather well in illustrating how much more approachable and open Domon has become.
This is actually a really accurate summary of this episode.

Seems like this might've been better as a later episode in a longer series as I might appreciate the peril the cast faces where as of now I'm indiffferent. Episode 3 is far more engaging as the technobabble has largely been dropped and we start getting to to the heart of who
Maya is.
Sailor Moon S 91
Artemis/Minako exchange when the topic of cat care came up was hilarious. Creature appearance from the puzzle amazing in its own right and it apparently being made out of puzzle pieces gave it a surreal feeling. Definitely one of the better visual experiences in the show thus far. Also, the Sailor Senshi are jobbing early this time around. Bring on the upgrades.

What a wonderful episode. The show possesses a great charm and a potentinally silly concept was given enough grounding to make it believable and fun.
Not sure how I feel about Chibodee's childhood trauma that causes him to be afraid of clowns or how poorly he handles it. Can't really hate on getting a song from Rain though. How ruthless his opponent was in pressuring him on it was pretty good though.

Yeah, I am aware, it's just I can't call him Space Kotetsu if he doesn't at least look like him.
It's what's inside them that counts. (I get what you're saying, but the position they're both in makes them feel similar for me regardless of how they might look. Space adventurism replaces superheroics, but the similarities are enough to make me think them quite alike.)
I just... can't take the MC seriously when he looks like a 3rd grader from a 4koma or something.
