What's the gaming word you hate the most and why?

Narrative.

Usually because for the most part it's a buzz word used to describe on the back of the box the two-bit story the game has.

(popular title)-killer

ex. - Zelda-killer

I don't hear it much nowadays, but this was such a stupid term. Yeah, that one killer game is going to be the downfall of said series, nevermind the sequels that are going to come afterwards, they don't count for some reason.

"Amazing". Not really just a gaming term, since it's used to describe Goddamn everything these days.

I can't recall the last time anything "amazed" me. Let alone the latest sequel to Series X.

And why yes, I am a curmudgeon. How did you guess?

Gamer is a good one, but I gotta go with adding an unnecessary letter before RPG. The only acceptable one is SRPG for strategy RPGs. ...and occasionally ARPG for action RPGs I suppose.

Streamlined. Just fucking call it what it is: dumbed the shit down.

I'm going with this one. Too many games have been wrecked because of this.

Also, can somebody explain the whole "entitlement"? Seriously, in what context are people using it? Mainly because I dont remember seeing people using here.

Generic

Used often on GAF, and usually with no further details. Its utterly meaningless.

If you're going to use the term at least take the time to spell out what you mean. Please.

Thank you. I think most imbeciles use this word when they don't like something -- or are simply trolling -- and lack the vocabulary or the rationale to explain in adequate detail.

'plat'...

i will never understand the urge/need to 'plat'. particularly in the case of playing a game far beyond the point of actually enjoying it, & simply in order to 'plat' it...

People calling me/someone else a noob in an online game. Not only am I not offended at all by hearing that, but it makes the person saying it sound like a 10 year old school girl with rage issues.

Since GAF = gaming, I'll post the words used here that annoy me the most.

"entitled" - the go-to word for anti-consumer GAF.

"hyperbole" - you'll usually find this used within the first five posts of any thread. It's definitely in the running for most overused word on GAF.

"advent" - I get it guys, you want to add a bit more gravity and importance to your views on some era of gaming.

"journalist" - nothing these bloggers regurgitate even comes close to journalism. Let's not group these corporate mouthpieces with adults who do real work.

I always hated when "Man God" used the word "fresh" in all his impressions. It was one of the reasons I fast forwarded podcasts when I realized he actually liked a game and was about tell us how new and "fresh" the game was.

ironically, i hate the word gamer. i just hate being called one. im a person who likes to play video games. i dont get paid to play, i play for fun.

I hate this word, too; but, on the same token, is there a good terse means of replacing it? The majority of people I know play games, but most of them aren't as passionate and obsessed with them as I am--what's a short way to describe this to people? Gaming Enthusiast?

"Random" whatever when people are commentating/talking about a match (ie random Ultra, random hopkick, etc). It can be poorly timed, accidental, or a legit read, but it's become a catch-all for anytime people don't understand why the player chose to do a move.

A person who plays games. What do you call a frequent movie goer? A movieer?

Immersion or Visceral. They are fall back words to act like there is a ton going on to merit the use of those words.

I don't mind any terms, because they're all silly. But if I had to choose, it would be dudebro. Some people like to talk down about some gamers because their tastes aren't the same, so they have to label them as casual or dudebro.

No, a Movie-goer. Or a Film Buff / Movie Buff.

I'm not necessarily looking for classification, just curious if an acceptable term exists to describe a person for whom gaming is an usually large part of their life. I think "gamer" is common because it existed before niche games (eg. JRPG's) truly went mass-market (eg. FF VII).

Also, I'm sure it's already been said, but I hate the term "Halo Killer" b/c I don't understand why Halo needs to be killed off for another FPS to be just as good of an experience.

I feel like at this point people have complained about the use of "entitled" more than it was actually used.

You must have had the privilege of avoiding the ME3 ending controversy. Unless they took the more interesting (and perhaps more valid) approach of defending an artist's vision, almost all of Bioware's defenders claimed that people who hated the ending and wanted it addressed were "entitled." The word almost became a meme in less than a month. Oh no, those angry, entitled customers are demanding that the conclusion to a story heavy trilogy not be total bullshit.

Chronicles...

I don't hate the word... but for some reason... I get turned off by a game with that word in the title and have no urge to play it.

Not really a gaming specific thing but when people use the phrase "Epic Fail" I no longer consider them to be a real person. Nails on a chalkboard to me.

I don't see why you see that as so ridiculous. It was essentially an issue of entitlement, with two valid positions, however overused that word might be.

Can't think of any synonyms to entitlement.

Even in those topics it very quickly became a thing of "well I guess you'll probably claim I'm entitled but etc etc etc." It's actual use in a criticizing manner by the majority of people was really short lived. It was dead in the water almost as soon as IGN used it.

The only other place I remember it coming up a bunch was in the Street Fighter X Tekken on-disc DLC kerfuffle.

Many of mine are already taken, so I'll add 'greedy' or 'arrogant' to the mix. The amount of mental acrobatics necessary to misalign a billion-dollar corporation's goals with your own is staggering.

"Retro" gets me like no other.

"Retro" is not the same thing as "old" oh my fucking god stop it.

1. Awww ='(

2. Retro is a culturally outdated or aged style, trend, mode, or fashion, from the overall postmodern past, that has since that time become functionally or superficially the norm once again. The use of "retro" style iconography and imagery interjected into post-modern art, advertising, mass media, etc. It generally implies a vintage of at least 15 or 20 years. For example clothing from the 1980s or 1990s could be retro.

Maybe be more specific about what kind of "retro" you're talking about? For example, there's a trend in indie games right now of using early 80's-style pixel art that annoys me; it's just a superficial choice rather than an homage or stylistic choice. Kind of obnoxious. So I can understand that getting mentioned in this thread.

This.

Grinding is a plague to gaming. It rewards losers who just have more time to waste instead of rewarding skills. I also hate that word.

Grind.

Just brings to mind many failed attempts at playing JRPGs and the current trend of people copying Call of Duty's reward system.

Farming, is a similar one. I hate the idea of people playing a game a certain way just to improve a particular stat or achieve a certain goal and turning the game into something the developers never intended it to be.

Yes and yes. Fuck em both.

Hate is a strong word, but I sort of dislike the usage of "casual".

Also, this thread must be a nightmare for linguists.

Any psychologists here? Would a psychologist explain to me why people would feel perturbed by semantics and/or pragmatics?

Casual....

Unless you play games for e-sports, EVERYONE is a casual gamer.
Even if you are a 'hardcore' gamer in you're choice of games.

You are still casual.

P.s- Grrr. I consider a dancing game hardcore. It takes alot more effort lol.
