Dragon's Dogma Demo Impressions

So what do you think, should your pawn be sorc/mag or a warrior/strider type?

What's good!?

Tell me about your character class combinations and strategy.

I'm going to be a mage, with my wife as my main tank pawn. Then a couple scrubs modeled after my friends.

Tried the demo. I would say that Dragon's Dogma is a mix between Demon's/Dark Souls and MH but leaning more towards the former. There are certainly some MH influence in there.

Saw a few MH moves, like the upper sword slashes (R+triangle) and the arrow range shot (L+triangle) lol.

I like the controls, it's actually really easy to pick up. Pawns are irritating as hell but they do help out, similar to the felynes/cha cha in the MH games. Overall, it's still a bad substitute for multiplayer.

The camera view's a bit too close to the character which makes things really confusing in some situation. Also I do not fancy the 'press select' to use an item, it makes the game lose the sense of tension.

After playing the demo, I can't help but to think that this game was made for multiplayer from the start but scrapped halfway thru development maybe due to time constraint issues. Will maybe wait for the inevitable Dragon's Dogma G with online multiplayer :p

Edit:
Overall a pretty decent demo and I enjoyed it. Finished the Chimera fight two times too, one with 3 pawns and one with just 1, which is much more challenging and fun.

Hrm, not a very good demo. UI was an absolute mess and things seemed a little too easy. Combat was flashy and entertaining enough, at least, but it was all over fairly so quickly. And although I could still tweak a few things to my liking, there's a ton of uggo character creator options too. Not really sure if we needed more than one Humpty Dance guy nose, but Capcom put in a dozen anyway. Just in case!

I'm still interested in the full thing, combat was enjoyable, but they could've done a much better job showing this off to the curious.

"Well, gosh, my experiences with the demo turned me off the game, but, Game Informer gave it a 9/10! They know what I like better than I like! I'd better buy it anyway!"

It's certainly happened before on gaf. Nothing to be ashamed of, really, positive impressions and hype from a community you respect is a powerful thing. And, please, no one is every swayed by Game Informer. Edge and Eurogamer however? I wouldn't be surprised if they both praise it leading to many on gaf picking it up. It's happened to me before.

But my suspicion is that there are people here going in ready to hate it because of all the crap Capcom has been giving us lately.

Played the demo.

A bit disappointing. Hud is horrible, so many icons and useless text, and it felt more like an action game than an actual A-RPG game.

But I think that will buy it, the archer gameplay reminded me of my role playing character I use with my friends.

You can hide the control display in the hud. Go to option in the main menu.

And to those saying it's too easy. It's THE DEMO. How often do demos actually give you a challenging section of the game? It's very rare. Same goes with Diablo 3 and all the people freaking out over its difficulty.

It could still make encounters with grunts seem less like filler moments until OMFG BOSS!

Every encounter felt the same with little to no strategy. I don't see why I shouldn't feel this way, since this is what Capcom felt would give me an impression of the overall game. My impression is there is a lack of strategy in battles and that leveling up in this game will make battles pointless.

The fu-... Wha... What?

You're top down WoW will be here shortly. This game is in no way generic and comparing the two is pointless. Thanks for your thoughts... guess you're done here then, eh?
Yeah I'm done. I wish the game the best. PM me if there's a problem.

You can finalize that idea based on the demo, but Capcom has said that strategy will play a large role and the previews will back it up.

So they made an easy demo, but if you pass on the game for the lack of strategy there that doesn't change the case that you will miss out on what the retail game truly offers. Choose to miss out, that's your choice.

I think like a 30 minute time limit to just run around and maybe even get your ass handed to you by a higher level foe would have made a better impression with some. That said, I really can't believe that some people are judging the difficulty of the game based on the prologue quest and one against a low level Griffin with a character with leveled up and locked in stats for demo purposes.

This is why open world games with hours upon hours of content are so hard to demo, as it can only give you a general idea of what the game feels like, but not what it is going to be like hours into it, when you wander off and come across enemies that will destroy you until you level up. Every preview makes it a point to mention that the game is by no means easy, and you will often find that you need to retreat and level up more just to progress. Keep that in mind.

As for myself, this little taste only confirmed that the game is exactly what I have been watching in all the footage. It served it's purpose for me. As I have seen and read enough to know that once out in the open world with my own character that I will be leveling up from scratch, the game will present plenty of challenge against foes like Drakes, 'holy shit' moments and many laughs as well. Could not be happier and can't wait.

Since it's gonna be released next month, I don't think it is an early build (unless Capcom wants to fuck with our minds), just a very limited one.
Demos are often earlier builds regardless of when they release them. It takes less time away from the dev team if they can release a demo they've already made for E3 or an earlier event.

Sorry I don't buy in to PR speak. I've yet to see a preview where they do a different combo than the standard one, so forgive me if I don't believe people who are mashing combos all the time when they say there's strategy to the combat, or others who say the combat is strategic and then bash DMC.

And, well, yeah...isn't that how passing on a game works?

I might not pass. Going to try the game tonight with less pawns and see how that goes.

Of course it's an earlier build than the gold one, but I still don't think it's a really REALLY early build.

Really enjoyed the demo - just enough to get me excited and wanting more. Spent way too much time making my character and pawn. Loved the lighting in the Build up to the Chimera fight, and how the sun was setting in the Griffin fight. I just want to explore Gransys dammit!

I'm sold, they can have my money.

yeah, can't find it anywhere on my 360. Will download the PSN version.

edit: ah, looked on xbox.com

"This offer is only available to Xbox LIVE Gold members."

I wonder how many health bars the larger monsters will have when you and your pawns are level 200.

Well, not sure about level 200, but we have seen footage against the Drake with about 7 health bars and the developers of the game got their ass handed to them and had to retreat on each occasion. The game is not going to be Fable, if that's what you mean.

anybody else get massive graphical glitches on 360?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZxCUOM8tbU

happens in both missions (other games on my 360 play just fine, so I'm pretty sure the system isn't dying)

Nothing of the sort in my demo,I would suggest deleting and redownloading...I had a weird glitch after the demo was finished, that little achievement like icon that says the demo is done downloading kept looping non stop, had to reboot the 360 for it to stop...

Ugh,not really feeling it properly. Too many texts cluttering up the screen and I never know what my pawns are doing, combat will take some time to get use to not to mention the lack of dodge button.

Biggest mistake I made is to play like Demon/Dark souls since L1/R1 does combat differently. Bowing is definitely Monster Hunter.

I guess I need to play more to get a better hang of it.

Yeah, the lighting is really nice. During one of my attempts at the Griffin encounter it spent a long time up in the air, so I was pelting it with arrows but the sun set when it still had a health bar left or two left. Then things got rough!

Four lamp lights running all over the place while this invisible Griffin swooped us constantly, cloaked in the darkness. My mage refused to give the party fire weapons so I had trouble shooting it out of the sky. We managed to dog pile it when it landed briefly and then three of us were stabbing the shit out of it in mid-air; the lanterns on our belts lighting up the bloody, arrow-filled Griffin.

Finally it came crashing to the ground and things were all quiet and incredibly dark. I really like the night in this game!

Truly one of the biggest missteps. How no one on the dev team saw the potential of co-op within the first 6 months of working on the game is beyond me. It seems obvious to absolutely everyone that isn't on the dev team.

Cause Capcom has the amazing talent of putting people in charge of projects that will, in some shape, fuck the entire project up.

Keep replaying the demo fighting this griffin is fun as hell. Especially grabbing onto it as it takes to the skys and stabbing it.
