Dragon's Dogma Demo Impressions

I found everything about this demo to be simply amazing. At first It didn't live up to my expectations, but when i created my characters and finally climbed on top of the griffon and lit his wings on fire by stabbing the shit out of him, it all came together. When the griffon started spiraling through the air and crashes into ground, i had the same sense of wonder as when I first did a spin on the desert colossus in SOTC. I literally said "HOLY SHIT" outloud and got a bit of a manly tear. The manticore instance didnt feel as good but i only played it once so i suspect when i go back it will also be awesome. That being said, having my pawn distract the manticore while i did the skyword slash and hacked the shit out of the snake tail was amazing. I'm pre-ordering this without hesitation.

Best character customization ever. I can make the funniest dudes ^_^

Also, the demo was super short and super easy. Neither option took more than like 10 minutes and I don't think I got hit once in either one :-(

Yeah, I've seen videos of just people mashing a button at the Chimera's butt over and over and it would die from their pawns killing it, they're all like "man this game is easy!", gets hit and his pawn would heal him so they won't even die even if the chimera hits him every once in a while, since Salde is tanking and everything.

Capcom has made a terrible mistake with this demo

If you want to give it another go, you could solo it, it's a better demonstration of the game and you need to avoid spells/attacks, and it's not too hard since it's a prologue.

I've been playing the PS3 version of the game. The only time I ever notice framerate issues is when first entering a new area.

Hype!

Played the demo last night.

Loved the graphics, all the different moves your character have.

The battles were fun and intense.

I havent really been paying to news of this game so sorry if its been asked a lot already - how open world is this game?

I imagine not big like Skyrim , but will it have sidequests, loot, etc.?

Journalists says the actual map size is a lot smaller than skyrim, but it seems the developers are saying it would take a while to travel across the map (they said an hour or two), and journalists says it does take a while but mainly due to monsters getting in your way.

The open world design is similar to those games though, and I think some said it's about the size of oblivion, so I'd expect something like that (never played oblivion myself).

Yeah it appears to be a full blown RPG despite Capcom refusing to call it that. There's towns with quests and merchants and all that stuff and there's loot and a seemingly in depth skill system. It looks to be as RPG as western ones get.

Don't know what the class is called that you use in the griffin fight but you can shorten the startup frames of the RB+B spinning air move that does massive damage by jumping then doing it quickly whilst airborne.

So jump with A then Hold RB then press B. I soppose you can press RB and B at the same time and will do the same thing. Use it when the griffin is downed. I don't think you'll start off with that move straight away, seems overpowered. You can kill a goblin straight away if all the hits connect.

I'm guessing Capcom will give you the option to cancel moves into it. . . then it's game over for most small fry. It does splash damage and clears the area if enemies don't block too.

This has probably been asked before, but I don't have time to go through the threads, so here goes:

- Any way to make this game full screen? Letterbox, seriously?
- Do you have stats in this game? Could find the inventory, but no characteristics page.
- Any news on a PC version? Modders could have a field day...

thx

How long before you anime dudes collaborate to make a team of little girls called K-On or something? If you do, put it on YouTube lol. Gamertag seems to be the way to go. I kind of want to make Geralt and Triss.

The character creation is awesome. You could easily make you and your pawn two little freaky, balding, wrinkly, big-eyed "psychic" (mage) kids ala Akira. So freaky.

I loved the parental control names, especially:

DD is open world right? Or is it more split into zones?

Also, how big was the install on PS3 if you don't mind answern' Shidoshi?

Tried out the "Set your 360 to 720p mode in the dashboard"-trick, and it definitely helped, the tearing is still there, but it's minimal, before it was extreme.

Weird bug

Is this true? Lol I'd so love to try this.

Yeah, give it a try, I only tried it a few times on my other account, with my tiny character the Griffin would fly up when I climb on it, but on my fat character it would just hover and move forward until I run out of stamina

Oh man, I completely forgot about doing this for some reason. I have a UK and JP account alongside my US account. I didn't wanna edit my characters but now that you reminded me, I can mess around with the characters on my alts. I might even end up making something better and have to bring them to my main account. But first I'll try the little kid and huge fat guy stuff. =D

Finally managed to play the 360 demo and the frame rates are better than ps3. The screen tearing was awful though! However, setting the console to 720p worked. The screen tearing was barely noticeable after I did that.

1) Awesome find, tried it and it's true, lol.

2) You have got to be kidding me, for the longest time i was worried that the game wouldn't let me have two or more characters on the same console, and this is all i needed to do? Goddamnit.

Yeah, the Capcom references in those names is a nice touch.

Also, I made my pawn some kind of freaky slenderman.

i didn't have any reservations, but it's good to see this comfirmed. 1 month.....

Just to be clear, what I mean is that if you were to ask me if the game has framerate problems, I'd say only when you're switching zones (as in, say, leaving a town). If people are super-picky about framerate, they might find more issues than I, but I've never felt like framerate was affecting my enjoyment any.

I'm curious to try the Xbox 360 version of the game, though, since some people have said they noticed tearing issues with that demo. I tend to notice that far more than I do framerate issues (unless we're talking noticeable issues).

LoL. When you select Missile as a moniker your character should just scream out "Welcome!" when approached in the "pawn shop".

Doing the Chimera alone was a lot of fun, but bringing at least one pawn along is even better.
3 would be a perfect number i think, 4 seems a bit much.

If you make an overweight character and climb on the Griffin, the Griffin will struggle to fly and will barely hover above ground =P

Thats a nice touch. I grabbed a harpies legs and it managed to fly up into the air with me hanging on. I guess if I was heavier I could have weighed it down and pulled it to the ground.

Just played then demo and really enjoyed it. Much more than I thought I would after what I'd heard and read. Combat was nicely handled, fast paced and with the grab and climbing mechanics it added an extra level of depth. The only thing bad about the whole experience was that I would have had even more fun with this if I was able to play with my friends. How hard could it be to replace any of the ai with a player character at any time. Games have been doing this for years. I can only hope they see how mind bogglingly crazy this oversight is.
Saying that though I'm still going to pick it up :D

My understanding is that yes, it IS big like Skyrim.

Thanks to all of you for the replies.

Hearing that it is open world makes me infinitely more interested. Will be looking for more info on this game.

Now @derrick - why would Capcom deny it? Fear of saying they are just copying someone else's game?

Sounds like just bad PR and marketing to me :p

They didn't really show off anything about the RPG aspect of the game until later last year or the beginning of this, but the development team didn't seem afraid to admit they wanted to make an RPG that was inspired by oblivion and dragon age in multiple interviews.
