TERA |OT| F2P starting in February! Were you expecting a parade?

This game has the best adrenaline rushes of any MMO I've played since the original EverQuest, and that's something I never thought I'd see again. The visceral feel of combat, the dodging and slashing, is just amazing. Especially when you arrive in a new area and take on a BAM that's designed for a group, all by your lonesome.

NfM1N.jpg
That BAM is hilarious it jumps back when you walk up to it. It's one of the few mobs that understood that he's fucked the moment he laid eyes on me. :D
With this said how is a pvp server fun at all?
It's really fun, it's a welcome diversion from time to time. With the whole channels thing going on it isn't intrusive either. It adds a really interesting dynamic and a random factor to the game, which I personally enjoy a lot.

Oh wait, this game has no lock-on, you can solo BAMs and you gotta move your ass to not get hit. Like Monster Hunter.

Wow, way to dumb down Monster Hunter, and I don't even care for the game all that much. MH is a lot more technical with a very deliberate pacing. TERA is much faster (and twitchier) in comparison. The two are both action games, but the similarities end there.

Yesterday I went to solo the Torpid Kumas pair for the cores quest in Celestial Hills, and what started as me versus a Torpid Kuma turned into me versus two Torpid Kumas and a Mercenary Naga. In the end only my glam rock 'zerker was standing. I love the fact that BAMs hit everything when they attack, including other BAMs. Made the brawl so much more fun, turning enraged ones on each other.

Most FPS games also have no lock-on and you can solo Bosses and you have to dodge to avoid getting hit. I guess TERA is like Call of Duty now too.

The point is that the inclusion of BAMs in TERA (which is a great feature) does not automatically make the game like Monster Hunter and telling people that is a disservice to both the people you are informing and the games themselves. Yes, TERA has BAMs in the game, and you might get a Monster Hunter vibe while you battle those particular mobs, but the BAMs in TERA are just one tiny iota of what the game is about.

You realize MH wasn't all big monsters either, right? Zones were littered with smaller enemies as well and fighting them feels identical to fighting regular quest mobs in TERA. You even got quests in MH to kill those smaller monsters, or to gather materials. The two games have a very similar focus as you reach higher levels (hunter ranks in MH): skill-based combat against large monsters that you can tackle with a small group or solo if you play well. It's not a mystery why people compare the two. The big difference, imo, is that TERA has a way smaller emphasis on crafting and the crafting that is there isn't as satisfying. I'd love to be crafting cool armor inspired by the BAMs or world bosses I'm killing but unfortunately that's not a feature in TERA.

World bosses in particular are really fun to fight, but so far they seem to drop even less loot than regular BAMs. Pretty disappointing.

The classes in TERA play at different paces, just like the weapon styles in MH. If you think the game is twitchy and doesn't emphasize a deliberate slow pace, you're not playing the classes which feature that. Berserker in particular is pretty close to MH-style combat with the heavy/slow weapons.

So how does using a controller feel? Do you feel as in control as with a keyboard?

I want to get a controller and plug this sucker into my tv if its not a disadvantage.

Do BAMs drop rare loot? (or are they more like an elite in WoW?)

I've only ever played WoW in the MMO realms, but it seems if something like these are suppose to be group tackled, their loot would be pretty 'unbalanced' to be given all to one player? :p

I'm going to buy Tera on Wednesday, after playing WoW on and off for 4~5 years I can't be bothered with it any more. I never really played it 'hardcore', was only ever in social/levelling guilds and done 5 mans. No raids or anything.

I quite like doing things solo (especially levelling) with the occassional group work/dungeons.

Not sure what class to try in Tera, probably one which can do things like solo BAMs forgivingly. Seems you guys enjoy doing so with a beserker or slayer (lancer seems to be pretty slow at it?). Mystic/Sorcerer if the action is more hands on than WoW seem like interesting choices to me, I enjoy being ranged casters, but it gets mind numbingly boring in WoW and obviously solo survivability is pretty crap.

Mobs can drop rare loot, but I'm not sure how biased BAMs are for it. I was questing outside the 35 instance last night and got a REALLY awesome gold (legendary) ring to drop. The mob loot would be an interesting study...

Also, you're in luck since TERA isn't really a "raid" focused game. In fact, there ARE no raids! ;) All current content is 5-man stuff.

Someone did a nice description of each of the classes, but based on what you brought up...Lancer IS slow, but survivable. DPS, however, is pretty bad. Berserker and Slayer are both great classes with great damage. I did an instance run last night with a Berserker who was doing mad damage. Mystics and Sorcs are also awesome damage dealers, with Sorcs [apparently] putting out INSANE numbers relatively early in their life.

They're kinda like those world elites in WoW, the named mobs that are rare spawns. They do drop rare loot, though I've never seen one drop a "blue" or above, but I'm sure there's a chance to do so. They most always drop lots of stuff, though, and give as much exp as some of the better quests in any given area.

A smug sense of self-satisfaction. :) No, you don't get anything at the moment. I think if you kill too many lowbies you get a temporary penalty but that's it. I hope that doesn't change too soon, but I fear it will. In my eyes the idea of open world PVP means you can kill anyone anytime. I think they've struck a good balance right now with the outlaw system.

So why roll PvP? Why is it fun? For me it adds an extra layer to the game. Call it player generated content. A band of high-level assholes group up and decide to terrorize Noobytown, and a guild of white knight types (Like BELIEVE) arrive to pvpwn them. Two players are both farming the same area, and one decides to eliminate the competition. You're riding along and see a player a few levels below you with a red name. You don't know who he killed, but you know he's a killer. And you know you have the means to exact sweet vengeance for your unknown fallen brothers.

During one of the closed betas the PVP server went down, so I worked on my character from CBT1 who was on a PvE server. I immediately realized how much I missed the element of danger from the PvP side. On the PvP server I tried to stay off the beaten path to not make myself a target. When I was killing mobs near another player, I kept my eye on them. And once I leveled up a little more, I stopped running and started fighing. And winning! Meanwhile on the PvE server I just quested. Kill X whatevers, turn it in. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Yes, sometimes the assholes will do some damage. I saw two players performing a long boring escort quest outside of Crescentia only to get pvpwnt right at the end of it by a pack of gankers. I was too low a level to help so I made like a tree and got out of there. Another time my mystic and a warrior were two-manning a BAM when a ganker slayed us both. Oddly enough he killed the BAM too and we still got credit for it. :p

Last night some elin bastard jumped my archer while I was dealing with a group of mobs. I managed to kite him and the mobs long enough to take him out. I had less than 5% HP when he finally dropped. There is nothing better than killing your attempted killer.

So there are pros and cons but for me the good far outweighs the bad. Especially in TERA, where the PVP is just so damn fun, I can't fathom rolling on a PVE server. I'm obviously in the minority, though, so take that with a grain of salt. ;)

Edit: And I should mention you can easily mitigate the damage if you're being terrorized on a PVP server by flipping to another channel. Unless you have encountered a really persistent ganker, it's unlikely that he'll jump around all the channels trying to find you again if you switch.

Agreed! Having to pan the camera around as you quest keeping an eye peeled for other players... or keeping one eye on another guy questing nearby wondering if he's going to keep questing along or start moving towards you... it adds another level of tension and fun that PVE servers just dont offer for me. Plus random pvp fights are exciting cause you never know whats going to happen as to where mobs are so predictable.

Some of my favorite memories in WoW were running battles in STV that started out as a little scrap over questing territory, then more random people or buddies or whoever would wander by and jump in and it would evolve into giant battles raging across the zone haha.

Sure ganking happens but most of the time it just a "god dammit" and a set back of a few minutes. Plus a lot of the ganking can be fun/goofy... like the level 60 sorceress on the bridge getting kamikazed by swarms of low levels. That sounds fun :)

Yeah, and MH lets you have dozens of skills and an easily mapped button that let you chain them together automatically. Seriously, I don't understand the need to insist the two games are similar, it is really misleading. If anything I'd say TERA is more like PSO than MH.

I want to get a controller and plug this sucker into my tv if its not a disadvantage.

I never did advantage comparisons between the two, I personally just always opt to play with a controller.

Personally I feel they did a great job, especially since you can fully customize it. (JUST REMEMBER THAT IF YOU REMAP YOUR JUMP, YOU ALSO REMAP THE AUTO-ATTACK OR WHATEVERYOUCALLIT THAT IS MAPPED TO THE SAME BUTTON. Failing to do this caused me LOTs of bugs before I figured out why... made game almost unplayable.) You have 18 slots for mapping skills to the controller: (4 face buttons + 2 triggers) X 3... (shift to alternates with LB, RB, and LB+RB).

You can control your UI mouse cursor with right stick and use either A or L-Trigger to select things (Y is equivalent to right click). I found this very good way to navigate a point/click UI with a controller. Once I got efficient with it, I couldn't complain.

If you choose to launch special attacks in the direction your character is facing instead of camera, you may lose some accuracy and miss more often... but it's just the way that feels natural to me (like other action games).

Now when play a range class, I place my camera over my right shoulder and to the right a bit more, to make it look just like Mass Effect... and map the main attack button to R-Trigger... basically turns the game into a 3rd person shooter RPG (ala Mass Effect). A bit stiff since the game doesn't actually use analog detection in the sticks (movement is also 8 directional fyi), but it is still how I prefer to play.

So you may opt to use M/KB for efficiency if that is your thing... personally I don't prioritize efficiency. I'm not playing PVP...

Cool thanks.

Been watching some videos on YT and the combat mechanics are such a breath of fresh air for me. Playing as a ranged character actually looks like it may be FUN, with you know, actually having to aim and not just locking on.

Might have to roll a sorcerer to start off with to give that a go :) Do races count in Tera (like WoW racials), or can you just play as you please?

I can't wait to pick this one up along with GW2.

It's one of the default high elf faces w/little customization since I just wanted to reserve my name in on time. I wish they could be more tan-skinned, so it'd be close to my own face. She looks white as a ghost in most lighting even if slight tan.

Man this place is pretty

PSO? Really?!

Dear God, make it stop.

Anyone that has soloed a BAM with a melee class can see the similarities to Monster Hunter.

In a game where skill > gear, and where gear from story quests are adequate, this doesn't surprise me.

E: For reference, I perfect tanked the boss from CR
that you read the book to start...the weird floating arm...thing...chick...?
And by perfect tanked, I mean I took zero damage. I was wearing pretty standard gear at the time, so it sort of just proves the point I guess!

No, I mean compared to K-TERA. Prices in NA-TERA are out of control, many of them ten to twenty times as high as they were in K-TERA. Every time I sell something I feel like I'm skinning people alive, I make out like a bandit with every sale. I just don't get it.

From doing a bit more reading into Tera, it seems like there isn't much weapon customization?

As in each class has a specific weapon type and that's it? If so does the game basically focus on unique skins for this weapon type or what else to differentiate higher tiers?

I do like that WoW has a pretty good amount of weapon customization. Might miss that a little here.

It's actually not as much money as it sounds due to how gold scales with level. I think the dyes for example are like 5k per if you get them from the vendor (the short temporary ones).

If you aren't a lvl48 sorc, you're a gimp sorc!
So the game is great? Hows community? people socializing?

How is the story? Well written, or standard so-so ala Aion?
Game is great imo, lots of fun with the combat. PvE wise the BAM's(always fun to solo) and instance bosses have a pretty nice challenge. The World PvP is pretty fun and pretty interesting what people think up. Area chat always makes me more stupid though. The guilds are pretty receptive since it's in early stages.

edit: Haven't bothered with the story, but I'm assuming it's average.

I come into this thread everyday, it makes me want to play. Diablo 3 is only 7 days away. Can i play both even if there is a sub to pay?!

lol I just dont know if I would play both, but I am really impressed with all the impressions and screens you guys are posting.
