The Wii U Speculation Thread V: The Final Frontier

Status
Not open for further replies.

Should be obvious that the opinions are not mine, but the expected opinions of all in attendance at E3, forum trolls, post-E3 commentators trying to decide who "won" or which reveal was best.

Nintendo should do their best to please everyone, and some of their properties will result in resounding "meh" due to poorly-received entries, even though of course we all loved them anyway.

I am hoping for the 3D 'Mario World'.

Mario Galaxy was certainly a step in the right direction about where to take 3D Mario. Mario went back to its platforming roots from his slight deviation into the more adventure/platformer hybrid that were 64 and sunshine. Galaxy though, still held on to some aspects of its predecessors: large hubs, lots of menus and text, collecting stars, etc.

Galaxy 2 trimmed a lot of the fat, but it could have gone even further.

We have still not yet gotten the definitive 3D platformer yet.

Fully streamlined interface. Interesting world map with hidden levels. Multiple exits per level. Secrets. etc.
Super Mario 3D Land 2 (or just "Super Mario World 3"). Really 3D Land is pretty much what I've wanted from a 3D Mario but never got except in small bits in all the other 3D games. A fancier console one in that same style would be great.

Edit: I see I wasn't the only one with the same thought.

3D Dot Game Heroes
Pretty much what I was thinking. And use the tablet to model stuff!
Good, but not mario galaxy good.
Yeah.
cause 3D Land is better than Galaxy

Thinking about it, Nintendo actually doesn't have a lot they can show that would get people unequivocally excited.

CYNIC TIME

Mario - Is a known quantity. People know that, whenever a new Mario game comes out, it will either set a new bar for the 3D platformer (that only Nintendo is attempting to reach at this point) or it will at the very least be a quality game.

Zelda - Zelda fans are jaded with a capital "J". The new one will never live up to the last one, which was always the best in the series.

Metroid -
If it's 2D - "They'll find some way to screw it up."
If it's 3D - "Metroid Prime 4? Wasn't 3 enough?"
...and Japan will hate it either way.

Star Fox - Even if they do it right, rail shooters just don't impress like they used to. Plus, there's the whole negative stigma surrounding furries. The world is a different place since the last time Star Fox was good.

Fire Emblem - Europe's getting it, so of course the U.S. is.
Six months later.

Kirby - Is the "condiment game" at these presentations. Not filling on its own, but brings the whole thing together.

Mario Kart/Sports - Are a given. No one will be surprised, regardless of quality.

Donkey Kong - Is basically in the same position as Mario now.

Pokemon - New Stadium? Great! New Snap? Alright! ...but they're all games for babies. (in the minds of the E3 crowd, anyway.)

Mother/Earthbound - Don't even think about it. Nintendo hates you, remember?

Pikmin - Everyone will love it, and no one will buy it...just like the last two.

F-Zero - See above.

Dragon Quest - Are you impressed yet? No? I highly doubt Nintendo could do anything to change your mind.

Wii Sports - If the groundhog sees this, it'll be another six years of shitty third-party mini-game bundles.

Smash Bros - A teaser trailer at best. Release date: Holiday 2014.
(Actually early 2015.)

...END CYNIC TIME

Seriously, now. I think Nintendo's recent releases have all been absolutely astounding, and I have no doubt that whatever they show at E3 will be utterly fantastic, as long as they keep in line with the quality of recent releases. That being said, I doubt Nintendo could do anything to impress the crowd at E3--last time they got impressed, the 3DS launched at $250. They won't be making that mistake again.

Just thought of a fast cheap port I'd like, with 3DS connectivity! Kid Icarus Arena, or something along those lines. Basically the multiplayer component of KI Uprising, import equipment and stuff from the 3DS game, play multi local or online, etc.

I really hope Nintendo can launch some new franchises on the WiiU. I mean Mario, DK, Metroid, Zelda and such are all great. but I really want something fresh.

I think Miyamoto said something about creating new games/franchises/mascots for Wii U

I don't disagree with you. But you're forgetting one thing. The way to "wow" people is to show them something they weren't expecting. That's why the original Twilight Princess reveal worked so well. They all wanted it, no one expected it. Same with Other M. People weren't expecting a Team Ninja Metroid game.

That's always been and always will be the key to getting the kind of reactions you want. Sure, you're not going to get a reaction to Pikmin 3 (except from me and hardcore Pikminites) because we all know it's coming. We're sure not going to go nuts over NSMB 2 when we've already seen stills.

What can Nintendo do to surprise us? Original IP. StarTropics WRPG. Kid Icarus Wii U. Flash the Retro logo and then a franchise that they've not been tied to (or that Sheik game). Those could get a reaction. You can go down the list of Nintendo's franchises and say that they won't "impress the crowd" but that's because we know, this gen or next, we'll eventually get another F-Zero or Zelda.

I think one of Nintendo's Wii U headliners will be another IP revival. And I'm not talking about something like Donkey Kong Country Returns, but something that has next to nothing in common with its even older and/or more obscure predecessors, like Kid Icarus. Something like Star Tropics, Wild Gunman, Teleroboxer or whatever.

I remember Hal_Laboratory dropping the "Retro is doing Donkey Kong" bomb a few days before E3 2010.

I'm expecting the same this year ^_^

Not sure if it will happen or not but I recall hearing a rumor on many gaming sites last year about GTA V coming to WiiU. After the unveiling of Liberty City Stories many people assumed that was the rumored game. Coincidentally, another GTA rumor is heating up about an October 2012 release. GTA V coming to WiiU for the launch...?

Hmm.. a fan campaign where folks send their severed left toes to Nintendo HQ as a sign of support for the revival of StarTropics? Amazing idea!

This plan needs more pitchforks. How about we wander the streets of Redmond harvesting little toes ending in the wee hours of the morning with bucket of toes as an offering to Fils Amie?

Ok Valve have not revelaed much about developing for wii besides maybe lord gaben saying that he thought the valve engines would transition perfectly with WiiU. is There a magical Cakebox coming for WiiU in the same vain as the orange box? Is there a valve game coming to WiiU at all and who will be publishing it? Would there be Portal 2 game and CS:GO double pack coming to WiiU as these are the two standout games (L4D is another on its own) that can be released by the end of theyear that will show off the WiiU different play styles that could lend itself very well to the tablet as well as getting a well known shooter and have interplatform play.

Does anyone have any noise regarding possible valve games?

Although on second thoughts for the most part I will still probably play the PC version if there are no WiiU exclusive features...

Half Life 3, timed exclusive for Wii U.

Everyone would be banned on this site in one day.
