Yeah, exactly. This argument doesn't hold up because Buzz Lightyear basically invented that face. I mean, as soon as they first show him, he looks like that.

What the fuck is this thread

A bunch of quality CGI movies have been made outside of Pixar. I've enjoyed How To Train Your Dragon, Tangled, Rango, Kung Fu Panda and Despicable Me more than the last 4 years of Pixar work.

Honestly the only Pixar movies I love are The Incredibles and Ratatouille, especially the latter. Dat Brad Bird.

Completely agree with this with the exception of Rango, which was good, but for me personally, short of spectacular.

Buzz gets away with it though because that expression represents Buzz's character perfectly. As for some of the others... Not so much

Eh, I think all companies have their ups and downs. I don't view Pixar as God's gift to man like the majority of the planet do, but I can also see why DW gets constantly ripped on. Still both have works that are in my top ten animated films of all time (Monsters Inc. and How to Train Your Dragon), but there's tons of other studios I'd rank above them.

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is an amazing movie that should be seen by all.

As for Pixar, their first 5 or 6 movies were all amazing classics which I will watch for years.. Some of their laster ones however have been less then stellar.

Wall-E for instance is one of the only movies I have actually ever contemplated walking out of the theater for. There is nothing redeeming about the 2nd parts agenda they were cramming down your throat the entire time.

I think Pixar produce better stuff in general than Dreamworks, but Dreamworks as a company is meant to be a better place to work at.

How is it mature? I have dreams. I have a passion for certain things. Cooking is not one of them but lets say I am intended to relate to it metaphorically.

It does not change that fact that I hate the main character, the supporting character, the love interest, the villian... The situation, and the way they treat those around them. Oh yeah and it is not funny, or heart warming, or in anyway relateable.

Fuck that movie. I love everything else Bird has done so I will stop being a dick right now. But that movie is shit. I am stopping being a dick now.

lol Wow. Are you for real? Almost everybody has dreams and aspirations so therefore everything else the movie was trying to do in and around that timeless theme was pointless? Uh huh. Your personal taste aside, this post is so dumb and poorly worded I'm not even going to bother any further.

Huh, I'm surprised there's not many love for Kung Fu Panda. I loved the film, especially Kung Fu Panda 2 which actually furthered Po's character development.

Anyone here seen this? It's very impressive and I found it to be more emotionally engaging than most Pixar films.

I think it requires a bit know-how about the biography because I didn't catch all the details about the relationship with the non-linear storytelling. It's still a great film, even if the nudity weirded my mom out hehe

This is actually what Pixar fans look like when they talk about those movies.

Edit: Plus, the classy looking chick in that pic looks like she'd obviousy much more appreciate a ribald anecdote about Larry King voicing a cross dressing bar keep in Shrek 2, amirite?

I like how the OP lumps "all animated movies" into the CG camp.

No Studio Ghibli love?

I like how the person replying to the OP presumptuously assumes I think of hand drawn and other forms of animation as an after thought. I LOVE hand drawn, stop motion and other animation techniques. But the point is at least in American cinema they're almost non-existent at this point and the OP itself is mainly a rant against over commercialized CGI fare. Anyways, three of my non-Disney/Pixar, non-CGI favorites that I can't live without:

The Iron Giant

I love this pic because I can just imagine replacing "dreamworks" with "pixar" on both sides, replace the dreamworks faces with pixar faces and you can make the exact same point.

Looks like I was beaten on that observation, but yep, humanoid things plus sellable characters plus shitty love story = animated movies these days. I don't care who the hell you champion and who you hate, it's the same crap and same formula.

So I hear. A girl who recently graduated from the department I work at did an internship for Pixar and was offered a job at both Pixar and Dreamworks. She chose Dreamworks and is now working on How to Train Your Dragon 2.

There are lots of non-Pixar CG films I like but Pixar is by far the most consistent when it comes to producing really high quality films. They deal with some pretty mature themes while still being fun for kids.

How come? Not the first time I've heard this and I'm just curious if you know of actual reasons.

Hey, you're the one with the nonspecific subject line. But I very much enjoyed your selections so we're good.

Okay, I really hate the stories in most of the Pixar films I've seen. Toy Story seems to be the only one I enjoyed.

I mean, look at UP and its talking dogs. Everything else seemed pretty plausible up until that point. WTF happened!? How about controlling a human being like a marionette by pulling its hair in Ratatouille? All human beings in the future are bedridden pigs in Wall-E? The things Pixar comes up with in their films are really absurd. It's like they create these stories just for the sake of having a story so they can call it a movie instead of a demo reel.

Their CGI skillz are the best, though.

You do know that these films aren't always supposed to be approximating life, right?

Better work-life balance, better chance of promotion, better benefits, higher salary, and it's union based.

It constantly comes up in the top US companies to work for, whereas Pixar doesn't.

Nope, pretty awful and obnoxious. Character designs were super random and senseless. Like most DreamWorks movies it relied heavily on pop music in order to make various scenes and montages more 'entertaining' through the sheer force of nostalgia. Then of course there's Will Ferrell yelling at the audience for 100 minutes.

this looks better than the females in incredibles who are all badly designed, physically impossible and likely to give female body image issues.

not even opinion, it is objective reality.

I hated Hoodwinked and could not believe they made a sequel.

This. This is the only movie in the history of movies that I can not even begin to fathom why people liked it.

It's the only movie I've actually wanted to unsee. Pure shit. More than pure shit, just awful.

It's a shame The Incredibles animation and design blows Megamind out of the water overall.

All I'm seeing is interesting character design (incredibles) vs bland character design. Obviously it's not supposed to be mimicking reality. In fact the designs are pushed so much that it's past the point where it'd cause female body issues, because it's clearly a cartoon.

The "Up sucks after the first seven minutes" argument has about as much validity as a Peter Molyneaux promise.

I was very disappointed by up after he takes off in his house. I felt the same way about Wall-E after they leave Earth, but even Wall-E's opening isn't as good as Up's. It just feels like they go from writing a great story, to manufacturing one in a storyboard room. Too many gags, that range from good to bland fill out the rest of the movie. Even South America wasn't as cool as it should have been.

I will say I love watching it on Blu-Ray though. The director's commentary/cine-explore with the ridiculous blu-ray visuals make it really nice to watch at home.

As far as my favorite movies non-Pixar, I really like How to Train Your Dragon. Rapunzel is nicely done in some respects, but it's style isn't very fresh. It's more of a technical exercise of translating a recycled, sometimes tale style into CG. They do it really well, and get something kind of interesting out of CG though. I don't know, the whole film just feels like it's running on 7/10 levels to me.

Really? I think one has no design opinion, the other completely works for stories sake. Mrs. Incredible's body is completely stretched out, but solid, trying to fill every role for the family. Has a very "mom" like body, exaggerated. Mirage is the slim, slender female. Clearly no kids, fashionable, the most tempting contrast to Mrs. Incredible for Mr. Incredible. Violet is thin, pretty, but unimposing by just her body. Which is her problem, not fully matured. They're perfect for the story, and all the characters have their own design theories beyond that.

Unrealistic shouldn't be a criticism for an animated film. I seriously doubt females are being given "body issues" from The Incredibles. How sensitive are we?

Really? I think one has no design opinion,

Yep. I don't think any of those MegaMind characters were consciously designed. They just slapped a bunch of random shapes together and called it a day.

All this comparison does is show how hopelessly bland DWA's human character designs are.

(HTTYD being a notable exception.)

But anyways, this is a dumb thread. I adore Pixar, but there are many studios churning out great animation.

If we're counting mocap Tintin then we should count Aardman.

Which means Pixar loses because Aardman is dabes.

I don't disagree completely. They've made some fine movies, but the CG animation style has grown bland and uninteresting. I'm sick of it. No soul.

Wouldn't go as far saying they have no soul, but Pixar hasn't really come close to topping Ghibli's best movies. Well there was UP's first 15 minutes, shame about the rest of the movie.

I honestly feel Pixar's no longer the clear leader in visuals anymore, technically or design-wise/stylistically. Especially with ILM and Weta now in the mix.

I have been pretty impressed with Illumination Entertainment. They have done a pretty good job considering they are all about working on a smaller budget.
