Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

OK guys, here's one for you. Been waiting to type this one after getting everything else out of my system today. My brother recorded the SpikeTV airing of the conference and last night made plans with me to watch it along with one of our best friends later tonight at his house, have some pizza, ect. Of course, there's no way I could resist watching the stream today ahead of time but I had no problem with the option of also seeing it again on a big 55 inch TV in HD (don't have cable) so of course I accepted this invitation, and it was a great backup plan just in case my internet had an outage or something, ya know? So...tonight I'm going in poker faced like I haven't even watched the conference yet. I'm gonna eat some pizza, sit back, and smile along with them at NSMB U and smile with them at Pikmin and then cringe at their reactions to the rest of the show. It's gonna be a paradox of strange wonders. Re-watching one of the worst conferences of all time on a 55 inch LED TV seeing my brother and friend go.... o_O

Has there ever been a launch besides Dreamcast not launching with an EA Sports title?

They are laughing at us.

I just don't think they were ready. If Retro, and Monolith, and EAD, and HAL had great things ready to go, they would have made it in. The games they're working on must be so early in development......

Nintendo won e3 again.

The more I watch these, the more I see that MS/Sony aren't really about the games. I don't get the impression they're about making awesome games and experiences anymore. They always say they are, but then they release shit like Kinect and Wonderbook. MS/Sony is purely about the money and business decisions. I'm not saying Nintendo isn't in it for the money as well, but again, this really seemed to hit me this e3 watching all three conferences. Nintendo is about the games. Not turning your tv into an entertainment stations. Not monetizing DLC (I know they're starting to this gen). Not releasing games that need 20 patches to get right. They're all about, "what would make a fun game" whereas others are "what would sell".

I also see a company willing to admit its mistakes and try to make it up to their customer instead of MS/Sony saying 'too bad, deal with it'. I bought all my Sony products day 1 and so far have been burned. 3DS was day 1, but at least Nintendo tried to make up for it and they're dedicated a whole other conference to show they're backing their product up.

Do I care that Wii U isn't going to have a billion fucking shooters? Fuck no. I'm sick of shooters and the very little it has done to evolve the series.

Still, while I say Ninty won e3 and had a decent line up, I don't think Wii U is for me with its plethora of older ports and uninteresting gameplay (I'm not sold on the pad controller and how you'll interact with it). Likely going to stick with the good old PC and hope the Vita and 3DS can get me my other fix.

Doesn't matter, like someone else said, they could have dressed up a few minutes of in development gameplay. They need to stop with this "Not ready yet, guys! TOP SECRET until next year!" mentality for every single one of their games. Not showing or announcing anything from Retro and their other in house studios today was a crime.

yeah, and by the way, understand I'm just tugging your chain. i don't really expect anything special, it's all in good fun

As for Pandora View, I haven't looked at it, but isn't that just like the face tracking that has been around for a while now? Not really sure what that's all about?

Heh no problem, I understand.

Pandora View is the Tokyo street demo we saw at last year's E3. Nintendo has a few news ones at E3, where they place you on a trolley or in the middle of a festival and basically the Wii-U is a window used to look around the whole environment. For example, you can turn left, and you will see what is to the left of you through your Wii-U pad. It hasn't really been used to it's full potential in an actual video game yet, but it uses the same gyro technology that is used for aiming in ZombiU, and OOT/RE:R/Face Raiders on 3DS.

Picture a Mario Kart, with the regular view on the TV, while a first person view is on the Wii-U Gamerpad. While driving you can use your UPad to look around you, and use it for aiming where you throw turtles. For example, say you have a green turtle. While looking on the TV screen, you see luigi pull up on your left side. You could aim your UPad to the left, line-up Luigi on the UPad screen, and fire off a turtle. Obviously it's risky becuase you would be taking your eyes of the main screen, but that's what makes it fun.

Not necessarily, it's clear now this was a presentation of only the launch window, which I would guess goes from the (probable) November launch to... GDC maybe?

I am now convinced the big problem with the wii u is the 3ds. Why make a wiiu title when you can make a hand held title with much the same systems for a lot lower cost?

I don't think Nintendo expected the success they are having after the start. Now they have and it is a big problem for them.

In the two conferences left, expect a 3ds hardware revision and lots of games. I think they will push hard here and leave the wiiu in a very difficult place.

To me it looks like they are foresaking hardcore to mobile, not picking up the wii-sports player crowd abd relying on the gamecube like sales of the mario and zelda crew. Only chance they have is if it is cheap, which is likely why we still have no price.

Because they don't know what to do.

Watching now.

Pikmin 3... New Super Mario Bros. Wii U....

The games don't look visually mind blowing. But that's OK, just deliver 60fps gameplay and clean 1080p graphics, and I would be happy with that.

Then Batman Arkham City?

That's it? Two first party games, and on to the third party stuff?

Hmm....

Oh and now Scribblenauts Unlimited. Looks cool.

Montage time....

Darksiders II, Mass Effect 3, Tank! Tank! Tank (this looks interesting), Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Trine 2: Directors Cut (cool), Ninja Gaiden 3 and the Aliens game...

Well Nintendo's montage had a bit more variety than MS's conference montage.

Wii Fit....
and Reggies body is ready! :p

Gotta appeal to that casual market these days...

Uhhhhh yeah.

Now music talk....

SiNG

Gotta appeal to that female casual gamer demographic....

3DS... that 1st and 3rd party line up looks good! Can't wait to see more.

Now Lego City... Wii U...

Oh... that's enough from me. Continuing watching the conference... :p

I still want some clarification on how that Dance Central Wii U game works.

Do the dancers (up to 4?) hold wii-motes and dance? (we still need to buy wii-motes for the Wii U? Any word on a new wii-mote model?)

What does the person holding the tablet do?

Will the Wii U also use the Wii's sensor bar?

If anybody has that video archived, I'd love to watch it again. I didn't get a clear view last time because I looked away in embarrassment. Now, I am intrigued.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
To Much Mario from Nintendo in 1 year and not enough other stuff...

This year on the Wii/Wii-U/3ds...

Mario Party 9
Mario Tennis
New Super Mario Bros 3ds
New Super Mario Bros U
Paper Mario
Luigi's Mansion

Heck if it wasn't for Icarus Nintendo might have only released Mario related titles on the 3ds this year.

I like Mario, but I'd like some variety from the big N.

Just going to post some random thoughts I had during the conference since my mind is too confused to put it together into a nice paragraph:

- Great entrance from Miyamoto

- Pikmin 3 looking nice.

- Feel hyped for the rest of the conference this is just the beginning.

- Why is Reggie talking for longer than the entire Pikmin demo when he said this show would be all about games?

- Why is Reggie talking so much about Miiverse when they had a pre conference yesterday to get it out of the way? Just repeating the same information.

- I love 2D Mario but it would be nice to move to a different art style.....I'll still love this as well though :)

- The demo reel just showed near enough the exact same games as mentioned last year.

- Why are they dedicating so much time to Arkham City when it has been out for a while on other consoles? A bit embarrassing.

- Why are they dedicating to much time to Sing, Just Dance 4 etc?

- The usage of the Wii U control pad screen is very disappointing so far. Mario and Pikmin will hardly use it and the rest feels like random stuff for a 'non player' to use, like the 2nd pointer in the Galaxy games.

- A quick 3DS run down? Nice. Eh? Mario looks a bit dumb having to collect all those coins. Why have you said this is a quick comment and are now blowing your load despite having a 3DS specific conference coming up.

- Where is a graphical showcase exclusive to sell the game to the hardcore?

- Where are games like Alien: CM showing off some cool controller usages?

- Why are they spending what feels like absolutely ages showing Nintendo Land? The guy is struggling to explain how it works and I'm itching to see something exciting.

- Will there be a trailer to end things on a crazy note? OMG something is coming on the screen.....oh it's more Nintendo Land footage :(

- If I buy a Wii U at launch, what games can I get in the months after?

- Are third party studios sabotaging the Wii U, so that it is dead by the time Xbox 3 and PS4 come out? Hmmmmm.

- Nintendo is in big trouble. They lack direction and strong leadership. Future planning is unbelievably poor.

Well, maybe Japanese developers would rather make 3DS games than Wii U games but Western developers? Hell no.

Nintendo showed better graphics capabilities last year with their tech demo's.

Think about that.

Agreed. A huge mistake as well. All they needed to do was have a hardcore first party title showcasing the U's graphical capabilities. It should be as big a selling point as the new controller. All of the first party titles on display looked no better than Wii titles imo. What's the point in having a GPU that's at least 2 gens ahead of the Xenos and RSX if you don't have any games demonstrating it..?

The likes of Arkham City, Assassin's Creed 3 and ZombiU looked miles better than anything that Nintendo had, including Pikmin 3 for gawd's sake. In fact, the likes of Warner Bros., Ubisoft and Sega also demonstrated better use of the GamePad too.

I can't believe they've made such a mess of this.

And like I've said before, where are the likes of Madden, FIFA, Tiger Woods, Battlefield, Medal of Honor, Black Ops 2, Far Cry 3, Crysis..? This is a complete disaster.

I was incredibly optimistic after seeing the pre-E3 Nintendo Direct, thought that Miiverse coupled with the new controller was a sign that Nintendo had finally started to get things right but now they've seriously messed things up. Bugger all first party titles to interest hardcore gamers, bugger all third party support with more than a few major titles missing. It's going to have a worse launch than the 3DS.

I was thinking that the U would have sold 10-15m units before the PS4 and 720 were released but I really can't see that happening with the piss poor display of third party support we've seen so far. Terrible.

EA makes no sense, as was posted in the other thread- they both porting Mass Effect 3, but not Madden?

I missed the conference because I had to work, how was it? Ratings?

Basically it was an awesome intro with Pikmin 3 and Miyamoto, NSMB U looked hot, Batman Arkham City gamepad demo, new Scribblenaughts then the last half was literally a non stop trainwreck of nothing but music based and casual mini games.

What worries me about Nintendo is that this is their first HD console, they haven't had 6 years to get their engines etc ready. I know it took Square and other Japanese devs a lot of time and money to get their shit together on the PS360.

Just Dance 4 right?

I have no idea how it is working but if Wii Remotes are involved, the sensor bar must be as well right?

True but I was talking about a choice between them. If you are making a nintendo game? 3ds. Otherwise next gen.

Nintendo are not in trouble yet, just not making progress out of their regular market. Remember there will be pokemon. This thing will do ok.

All about price now to see how much better it can do.

You know, reading your post I pretty much agree with most of you wrote and especially the part about the billion shooters made me think of something: Is it just me or does our society slowly revolves more and more around a Highlander "The can only be one!" mentality?
I mean not just with games, I mean in general. Consoles were said to wipe out PC gaming, Smartphones will kill dedicated handhelds, Android will lose to iOS or vice-versa, Windows Phone is already dead, tablets will take over desktop PC, etc.

The same is reflected in gaming where more and more seems to revolve about a cinematic experience so I'm kind of glad that Nintendo seems to be some sort of counter-weight that tries to balance things out, I realized they did that with the Wii but the Wii U really is a bit aimless at the moment with what it wants to do, I agree with others on that. Developers are also affected by this, in the past gaming was mainly dominated by eastern games while now a certain westernization set in all over because it sells however I genuinely wonder why it's hard for things to live next to each other and maintain a balance.

If they can get the family to play games together it can be a success. Clearly that's what they're aiming for. The question does Wii U need hardcore gamers to support it in those early years. If so will they buy it? According to most people around here they won't. Then there's the question of whether or not the casuals will even care. They've already got their iPads, Kindles and phones and on top of that Durango is rumored to launch with Kinnect. Nintendo is really betting the farm right now on getting Wii owners to migrate to Wii U and I'm not sure they were ever going to pull it off again.
You're right, but it's a big 'if', and I don't think they've shown any titles that can get the family to play together in the same way Wii Sports did. The potential is there in Nintendoland and NSMB U, but the 'must have this console' title (allowing the other games to flourish) isn't there yet.

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
I wouldn't be surprised if the shareholders start asking for Iwata's head. During the Wii years Nintendo pissed of the hardcore but they always had the mainstream press, and the casual. The wii U is a different thing all together and it's Iwata's baby AFAIK. I mean jesus they've had 3+ years to plan for this shit.

I'm having an experience inverse to the Sony conference: on reflection I'm not as upset as I was beforehand. Yes, they completely botched the WiiU games presentation, but I just can't be too upset at Pikmin 3, two new interesting looking NSMB games, Paper Mario, and that interesting Zombie thing.

I'd say I've switched from C- to C+

Someone please explain to me why the fuck there are three methods of control?

GamePad, Wii U Pro, and Wii Remot + Nunchuck... Why the fuck are there so many?

A November port of Madden won't sell anyways, and then we have the same situation we had on the 3DS- a giant bomb and no interest in a followup.

Madden Wii for Wii's launch did perfectly fine at a minimal cost to EA.

Because Nintendo wants to do something new but they don't want to ditch the hardcore again like they did with the Wii. As The Magician said, they are directionless.

And to think I had prepared myself to download a whole bunch of trailers and teasers for Wii U games once the conference had finished.

What a bummer.

Maybe nintendo has changed to much to really appeal to the core base. They just dont know how to do it anymore. There is NOTHING new on wiiu. Mario and wii clones and year old third party ports.

Nintendo had to really get it together to sell me a wiiu and they didn't even get close. It is pretty much the most unfocused product. Disparate Control schemes. Rhetoric to appeal to the core gamer yet nothing shown.

They cant even appeal to their base fans...

Expect games like me3 to bomb big time. Who the heck will buy this on wiiu???

Worst e3 ever from the big three hahaha. Money will b saved

Yeah, there was a lack of a single megaton and there was a serious lack of interesting third party titles.

Although...what does third party titles even mean these days? What was even shown off at the other's conferences? It seems like the console market is incredibly tiny at the moment.

You left out the Dust Collector, I mean balance board. But yeah, there's one controller in all of that mess that may be good (gamepad). Couldn't care less about the rest.

Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, Grand Theft Auto 5, Skyrim expansion, Dark Souls expansion, Darksiders 2, Borderlands 2. Third parties mean EVERYTHING. It's why the Wii is dead now and the 360 is thriving.

I would love to see Nintendo have an E3 like Sega did in 2000. Sega went all out with the Dreamcast that year. One of the best floor shows ever. Please Nintendo watch that conference!!!

Actually I would love to see Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo produce a conference like that where its all about the damn games!!!

Maturity, bitches.
I missed the conference because I had to work, how was it? Ratings?

Nintendo Direct was better. In fact it was better than most of the conferences.

Nintendo's can be describe as passable, but seeing as it was meant to be the grand WiiU blowout it makes it doubly disappointing.

We all knew MS was going to be bad so them being bad doesn't hurt. Nintendo seems to have hurt a lot of people.

Good thing I watch these conferences just to make fun of them in my IRC room.

If they were smart they would have locked Ubi Soft's Watch Dogs down as an exclusive. That shit looks like it was designed from the group up for the Wii U. But nope, they just got Rayman and AC3. Those look great and all, but Watch Dogs is really perfect for this controller, and is a totally brand new, mature IP, which they really need.

Great, now even my hype for NSMB U has been deflated a bit. It looks like forced, tacked on motion controls will be in the game even if you're using the Gamepad. Get ready to shake your Wii U pad:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/06/05/e3-2012-behind-the-scenes-of-new-super-mario-bros-u

IGN: Where did Flying Squirrel Mario came from?

Tezuka: One of the fun things about this is trying to think of some new transformations for Mario. We really, at this time, wanted to give some degree of freedom of movement in the air. That's where we started. The key point there is "some" freedom. If you allow unlimited movement and the ability to do whatever you want in the air, then it doesn't amount to any sort of gameplay. There has to be a limit to what you allow people to do to make it enjoyable and make it challenging.

If you look back in the Wii version we had propeller Mario, that allowed you to do a lot of vertical movement, of course. And this time we just wanted to do something a little bit different. That was the thought that brought us to Flying Squirrel Mario. One thing that I actually really like about it is when you're in the middle of your glide, and you give that little flip to the Wii U GamePad, you get that little updraft or boost. He gets a little extra momentum. I especially like that part.

He also goes on to say that HD made Miis integration easier. What?! I love you Tezuka, but seriously?

Hey guys, I wasn't able to watch the conference live because I was working, I only was able to see disappointment on GAF! XD

Is there a place that uploaded it already so that I can watch the whole thing?

I just watched the conference and it was so excruciating I had to stop several times to let the pain subside. After reading a handful of comments on here I see the feeling is mostly mutual. Pikmin 3 could never be considered a true system seller but it should at least have been a SHOWCASE. Instead we get barely better than Gamecube graphics and countless examples of throwing pikmin at barriers, not really worth the wait was it?

Nintendoland just smacks of desperation. A bunch of their most iconic characters shoehorned into a mini game compilation, how the mighty have fallen. Probably because they don't have the resources to deliver a truly next gen game at launch for any of those franchises. My gut reaction to this shambles was that their home console business could be dead within 4 years. I hope im wrong but I defy anybody to disagree with the possibility.
