DmC E3 Demo Walkthrough - Mission + Boss

This is from the Capcom stream earlier. It's a walkthrough of both segments of the demo, but more importantly it's one of the few walkthrough demo's in which the actual mechanics are described button by button. I've been following the game pretty closely and even I finally really learned the controls + mechanics for the first time by watching this.

The boss fight segment begins at around the 19 minute mark. It is by Capcom, so I apologize for the PR filler - but it's mostly all demo and game. The quality is of a streamed video.

walkthrough - begins at 1:55 ends at 18:40. Boss fight is from 19:00 to end.

I'm very satisfied with what what I'm seeing. The other impressions from gaffers who played it offers a lot of confidence as well.

That boss fight was fucking ace too. The design and presentation are very well done.

That......does not look bad at all.
Looks a bit rough still, but i dont think it is the trainwreck everyone was proclaiming it was going to be.

From a technical visual perspective, it looks pretty good.

The combat still looks rough and imprecise, and the character/enemy design is still atrocious.

That dialogue! "Fuck you!" "No, fuck you!" "Fuck you!" "Fuck you!"

Extra cheese with that DmC?

Is it just me or has E3 this year been an f-bomb extravaganza?

The combat looks a little slow for my tastes, but I can see the appeal of it for others that are looking for something more "manageable", for lack of a better word.

I'm just spoiled by Bayonetta, I guess.

It has been. I love Dead Space but one thing that caught my attention in the co-op was the excessive "fucks" in the banter.

Yeah we were discussing the video in the other thread. Lots of new mechanics and moves shown in the video:

*Osiris and Arbiter have their own Stinger-like moves. Osiris has the wide arced lunge forward and Arbiter just throws out a projectile at long distance. They claim that it's done by doing forward, forward + Y with the corresponding stance trigger held down. The Arbiter projectile seemed to be done in the air too as he did it a bit later.

*Dodge is on 2 buttons (LB or RB). You can Dodge in any direction and also in any direction in the air but it's limited in range. You can also do an empty neutral air dodge which would probably help in maintaining distance while also evading attacks.

*You have double jump (Air Hike) and you also have the Angel Glide (basically Trickster Star Dash) done with LT + A. Don't know what the demon equivalent of that is.

*On top of the regular dodge, there are also Angel and Demon Dodge. Angel Dodge seems to be like a "phase" dodge that you can add on top of the regular dodge to cover great distances really quickly or do like a multi dash like an upgraded Trickster. The Demon Dodge can only be activated by timing the dodge with the enemy's attack and if you do it right it slows down time briefly. It at first looked like a shorter version of Witch Time but that's not the case, it seems to power up the demon weapon. More details once we learn more about both of these dodges. Dodges are done with Dodge button + the Triggers.

*Whenever you do a pause/delay type combo, the weapon charges up visually indicating that you have paused long enough and are able to do the second combo now.

*You can Parry enemy and boss attacks. Parrying the boss attack caused it to expose its head which allowed Dante to pull it so he can combo it with relative ease. Parry shows up in your style meter ranking.

*When you reach S ranks or higher, the combat apparently speeds up but it's hard to gauge from footage. Music also pumps up and gains more instruments etc.

*HUD is not finalized.

*Devil Trigger is on L3 + R3. Launches enemies and slows down time while also giving damage boost, probably speed boost and health regeneration. In addition, comboing while in mid air extends the timer.

*Double tapping the Angel/Demon Whip attacks (RT/LT + X) causes a close quarter attack like either a Kick or an upper cut in mid air. The uppercut move is useful to propel enemies even higher but there is a maximum ceiling to the height of combos (a bit lower than the max height in the DMC games).

*There are no Taunts in the game because of narrative reasons

When you come in terms with the fact that the gameplay just won't be as fluid as in previous games, DmC looks good. The visual style is great and the platforming looks way more fun with the transforming stages (yes, it's just a gimmick, but it adds to the atmosphere a lot).

It still is, and will be, a step backwards for the series' combat.

There was one instance where Dante sounded exactly like Jesse from Breaking Bad. was even expecting a few lines ending with bitch.

And as a fan of DMC since the original, I've effectively been converted. Day 1

Although the game speed is a little slow due to the framerate, I'm digging this game the more I see it. Not day 1 worthy imo, but definitely a purchase.

Edit: Oh yeah, no taunting makes me sad. ;_;

I have to admit, as a whole, it doesn't seem like the clusterfuck I thought it was going to be (I guarantee the bitching helped this team right some wrongs). There are some pretty interestingly decent things shown here as well.

Still.. as a long time DMC fan this just doesn't feel right. The combat seems slower and not as fluid, the gothic art style and setting is gone, it's still 30 FPS... it just doesn't feel right. like it just isn't meant for me anymore.

And I also haven't seen this game do anything that Bayonetta doesn't do as good or better combat wise. I know it may seem unfair to compare it to a God-Tier action game, but Bayo is the standard right now...

Did a complete turn around on this. PC version definetly helped since im now expecting a consistent framerate.

Looks great, looks fun, im gettin it.

Only ever played DMC3 and parts of DMC1 but I still take joy at the complete knee-jerk HATEFUL reactions gamer had to the original designs of the game and watching the complete 180s people have taken after...you know...they saw more than a 2 minute announcement trailer.

Well, if it doesn't have infinite invincible frames dodging, that's at least one step up (I love Bayo).

Oh shit didn't know this was announced.
I expected it though, considering DMC3 & 4 on PC, but confirmation is nice.

There's no GFWL right? I mean there is no MP announced, so doubt they'll go that route.
On that topic, aint it refreshing not having an IP blasted with MP/ Co-op?

As I said in the other DmC thread, this is the best video by a country mile (that's available so far) in how it delves in to the combat system and the available mechanics. Obviously we haven't seen everything and even combo-wise, I'm sure there is plenty of room for some incredible stuff.

Obviously I will forever have problems with the controller layout but I'm also excited to learn a completely new control setup. The potential is great.

I'm looking forward to playing it now. I have the DMC HD Collection and DMC4 if I ever need to return to something I'm more used to and that offers a different style of action game.

But yeah, I've warmed up a fair bit during E3.

Combat is kind of broken. You can just infinite chain devil/angel grabs on all the grunts. Not that they would be much of a threat anyway. Their attacks were extremely slow and telegraphed. Hope they fix that before release. It makes the combat in NG3 look like NG1.

Everything that wasn't combat was pretty neat. They should have just made a Super Magnetic Neo style platformer.

I'm hoping there will be plenty of enemies who aren't susceptible to cheesing with the Devil Bringer, including enemies who can break the grab. I'd like this on even the most basic of grunts (maybe on higher difficulties sure, but it should be default) so that I can't infinite chain.

It might just be a case of the heavier enemies requiring the angel grab so you can get to them quicker, with the lighter enemies weak to the devil grab. But then that doesn't necessarily lower the cheapness that far. Definitely need counters, parries and breaks for the enemies IMO.

In the full game? Maybe. In the demo I played? Nope. Even then, I was just styling with those devil/angel grab moves. You can button mash a no damage run.

Unless you mean that the enemies need to use those moves. In that case, hells yeah they do.

The negativity was in effect long before the game was even revealed based solely on the rumor that the game was being developed by Ninja Theory, and for very good and legitimate reasons based on their past output. This idea that all the complaining was just about a character redesign is a strawman.

Well I think it's safe to say now that Ninja Theory has outdone themselves and the crow is ready to be served.

The biggest problem for this game is MGR:R. Sure it will be a decent beat'em'all on par with what God Of Wars does but no way what I'm seeing is going to be on the level of DMC1/3/Bayo. Looks pretty for sure.

Gah this game looks so satisfying. Never doubted you NT.
Haven't you, like, played their games? lawl.

Stop being silly. The video you see today is a product of those hateful reactions. The game's changed dramatically since the many trailers we've seen, and the combat is still subpar.

I just love GAF... game looks just like it always has.... yet suddenly everyone's run out of crap to talk about Ninja Theory so all of a sudden it's acceptable to like it.

Certainly there's nothing markedly different to this and what we have been shown before.

Even if this game turns out worse than DMC 2, that would still be considered better than what many Gaffers have been saying about the game since the teaser released.

I'm still stung badly by the 30 fps thing, only because that's a DMC staple. Still, I think I have enough faith in the combat that it will at the very least be serviceable.

You're totally and completely wrong. The fact is, nothing substantial was shown gameplay-wise until recently. And the little that was shown was unacceptably rough around the edges. The actual character design has changed numerous times throughout the course of development.

And most Ninja Theory supporters that have been following this game closely recognize this.

You're so right. GAF is just full of legions of 'Ninja Theory Supporters' and handing Ninja Theory a port of Game X hasn't been a GAF meme for months - mostly from a super-vocal negativity re DMC.

Silly, silly me.

Probably the first video that shows that the game play can be fun. Most of the time the combat seemed floaty and without weight but this video has convinced me.
I love the art style which is refreshing as the sequels never triumphed the first game. At first I was skeptical towards that boss battle but it ended up looking pretty good.

Insecurities from looking at an attractive young man aside, are people warming up to this game? I heard on the GBcast a while ago that it was very fun.

Actually, yes. GAF does have a lot of Ninja Theory supporters. A lot of Ninja Theory haters too. You peeked into a DmC thread three months ago, so you figure you've seen enough to categorize all of GAF?

General consensus is that it looks surprisingly well made for a Ninja Theory game, but it also spells doom for the complex, deep, and rewarding DMC combat system. A trade-off that is more important to some than others.

I think it looks really good. The additions they've made to Devil May Cry combat look really cool, and it still retains the DMC feel, seemingly. I may indeed be eating crow, been several months since I did a 180 on this. It's a a bit annoying how there still is a completely unreasonable group of people unable to see any good in this.

I like what we've seen so far, but no lock-on button? Thoughts?

None, really. Bayonetta worked really well without the use of lock-on button(but you did have the option), and God of War too obviously. This seems to do just fine, and I like the simplified controls. When they said that in previous games you needed to press 3 buttons to launch an enemy I realized there's something fucked up about that. :p

They clearly need two entire buttons for one evade action, man.

It's explained why in the video. You're always holding LT or RT to modify your attacks, and if you're holding left trigger it'd be difficult to press left bumper, and vice versa. It's for comfort purposes, makes total sense and shows they've thought things through.
