Impressions from the extended 'The Last of Us' demo

I kind of figured that they made the demo during the conference a little more action packed as that would probably go over a bit better with the general audience. Everything sounds amazing though.

First is E3, second is the new one.

Seems that it was toned down at E3 after comparing them.

At around 8:06 they show the face/head shot.

So it's not scripted but the same exact thing happened in two different demonstrations? Or am I reading into this wrong.

That's the thing... The footage they used in that interview was the same as E3 as you can see when they show the other scenes, but for some reason, the E3 headshot didn't seem as explicit. I even see brain matter in the interview video, but in the E3 video he seems to keep his head in place.

I'm confused.

PS3 redeemed. May just have to pick up one used to play this.

The PS3 never had to be redeemed lol.

This sounds absolutely amazing. I wish I could play it this year, but please polish this to heaven and back so that it's at its best before we can play it! :)

Maybe they had to tone it down for the press conference because it was airing on TV? That doesn't explain the brutality of Kratos during Ascension though. :lol

Watched the last "the last of us" closed door demo with Kagari today. My impressions pretty much mirror m0dus'. Loved the possibilities of actions you can take to manuever yourself through danger while balancing the hunter/hunted feeling.

I kept thinking it'd be amazing if multiplayer was kinda like the DayZ mod where everyone is a survivor of some sorts in Pittsburgh and just allow the world to be influenced in the same way.

WAIT A SECOND. Multiplayer? That just adds to my excitement. UGH must freeze for a year!

Too bad it'll have a PSN pass though.

I love that stealth is a viable option; I'm interested to see how it applies to the rest of the game. As of this point, I'm sold on this IP but wouldn't mind more info. Next year is kind of a long time.

It's incredible how much quality content is coming to the PS3 in 2013, its seventh year on the shelf. This game is going to really knock it out of the park. I'm still not convinced if I want this or Bioshock Infinite more.

I really want to go on a black out for this game. I was absolutely blown away from the E3 conference though and I just can't seem to get enough of Naughty Dog. They are really something.

I have no idea what are you doing here, I'm seeing the same gore and brain matter splatter in the press conference footage, and in the official direct feed footage Sony released. The first screen is just a few frames away from the full gore showing up.

Ideally hidden or delayed trophy messages.

I'm surprised Sony hasn't added the ability to disable trophy notifications. I can ignore it easily enough, but I'm sure there are dudes out there that couldn't care less and would rather not see them.

I'd love to see something that combines what you're talking about with the Chromehounds MP model.

I think the major limitation would be environments. Traditional SP levels wouldn't really be ideal... you'd really need to have a number of large areas, and that seems like an unrealistic amount of work, considering the detail they put into these environments.

I don't know... really curious to see what they do. Hopefully, whatever it is, it's unique.

LAST OF US 2:

Ellie's a grown-up badass now and she takes a little kid under her wing.

Rinse and repear for the Last of US 3.

;)

Last of Us 2: Ellie is all grown up and a master at survival, traversal, and combat... spending her days exploring the ruins of a past civilization. She is basically Lara Croft and Naughty Dog has made Tomb Raider better than Tomb Raider for the second time.

After reading up on DayZ mod, I agree.

Though this game is supposed to take place in multiple cities in the US, AFAIK. So I don't know how they would keep continuity and stuff like in DayZ. I do like the idea of one death and you need to start over. Sounds like a very interesting multiplayer game mode.

Sounds fucking amazing but:

Got into the last screening (hi Arne!). Way more interesting than Uncharted. Has a more captivating tone, but the main thing that does it for me is the scarcity of resources and the hard decisions made there in terms of how to approach the combat. It also allows for bullets to be important and deadly, which is an important change from ak47 bullet sponge uncharted crap.

Come on...Uncharted is crap now? Let's not get carried away.

I was shaken from that shotgun blast, as if I had just seen my first snuff video.

I was not expecting a videogame to be that intense and genuine. Completely off-guard...

Hats off to Naughty Dog.

-The game is describe as wide-linear
-You will have a wide variety choices and places in terms of combat scenarios and places you can go.
-Ellie will fine stuff for you and offer you bullets
-You get additional story by exploring
-They developed a rules base vocal system that causes them to talk with each other in different ways base on what the player is doing.

Some great details

Haha I'm not trying to do anything other than show what I noticed. I honestly didn't see the same gore at the E3 video. I even saw his head move back, but no exploding. I wanted people to check it out is all.

I also tried to take screenshots just before the logo appeared. I rewatched the videos too and I still see a difference. Maybe it's just me.

Changes to The Last of Us' Ellie and announcement of Ellen Page in Beyond are "complete coincidence"
"We didn't event know what was going on with that," The Last of Us' game director, Bruce Straley, told Eurogamer at E3. "We don't know what's going on with other games."

Straley said the suggestion that Ellie looked like Page came as a surprise to the Santa Monica developer - and not even a pleasant one. "We hear what people are saying - we didn't realise that ourselves, because we just try to push for the characters that we want. And when we see the reactions we're like, OK, we don't like that... We want our characters to stand on their own two feet."

Straley also pointed out that Ellie's new look more closely resembles the actor that plays her, Ashley Johnson. "We went a little bit younger, and we think that we got a little bit more Ashley inside of there, which we like. And we really want to respect Ashley for the great performance that she's giving us."

Yeah, looks like it's just a different frame in the sprite animation.

No, I see what he's talking about. The first one clearly has a chin/head outline, with blood on it. The second one has the skull completely blown in. The first can't be an earlier frame in the animation of the second because the face wouldn't bleed, completely intact, and then explode.

At least, that's what I see.

Tenuous item management, low ammo counts and static health bars. GOTY.

Wait... what?

OK. Is this for real? Because often times developers love to toss these kind of things around to try and fool people into thinking their gameplay has some kind of depth. The whole "stealth or action" are equally valid is always a red flag for this kind of thing.

I want to see someone actually have the balls to build a good modern survival game. Only 50 handgun rounds in the game? Hell yeah.

But they have different ammo counts so it is clearly taken from different play throughs.

This is the game I and many others have been waiting for.

We started with a crazy Kuturagi promise of pleasure from the 4th dimension coupled with a badly formatted System Clock on the XMB... and end up here at "Last of us" (and also likely Beyond).

What a strange evolution the PS3 has had. Can't hardly wait though!

From the demo yeah. Health didn't regen as far as I noticed. Ammo was severely limited. The character had to pull of a backpack and fiddle inside of it. Getting things out like a Molotov must be properly prepared it seemed. Things don't just pop into your hand.

Backpack inventory also doesn't pause the game, which is sooo gooooood.

I'm really impressed with how in just one generation Naughty Dog went from being a Nintendo Wannabee studio hardly worth of producing 2nd string Nintendo games to one of the top studios in the industry.
