Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

The Q6600 is going to be your biggest bottleneck.

I figured. I'm not going to be able to use LLE (or whatever it's called) for audio unfortunately, I already tried that. Is it a bottleneck in that I can't raise certain (non-graphics) settings up, or will it cause problems even using settings best suited to performance? Or more worrisome, will using higher graphics settings also strain the CPU?

Only HLE/LLE and hacks will alter CPU demand. Graphics settings should be GPU only.

So, if you want to have an idea how well games could potentially run, turn down the resolution/AA/AF way down and see if you can get decent performance. If turning up the graphics settings from there slows down your game, then you'd benefit from a better GPU.

It's very game specific...some games demand a ton of CPU power to run properly.

Quick hardware question, I have a Q6600 @ 2.66GHz (slight overclock). Assuming that I have the best video card imaginable for Dolphin, are there going to be any FPS issues with any Wii or GC game? I'm ready to upgrade my video card, with Dolphin being one of the main reasons, but I don't want to shell out money for one just yet if it's not going to solve all my FPS issues at 1080p with anti aliasing.

I'd say you need a new processor to play Wii/GC games at any reasonable speed.

Anyone have a good starting point for Xenoblade configuration? Are there any hacks that I should be on the look out for (like the Zelda text speed increase) that will improve the general experience when I play?

Booted it up and was pleased with the performance at 2x internal resolution, but I think my system can do better. Xbox360 controller worked like a charm though, just need to map it better tonight.

Okay after those E3 conferences I'm done with console gaming and I'm ready to make the jump to the master race.

What do I need to play this at 60 fps?

If you aren't running a XB-specifically optimized build, that might help. But yeah, even then you'll still need some horsepower to run LLE at full speed. I can do it fine at 1920x1200 w/ v-sync and LLE with an i7 2700k OC'd to 4.4 GHz and GTX 570 OC'd to 1.075 GHz.
I don't think the GPU overclock is necessary. A stock 570 is more than capable enough for that resolution.

From what I remember, Xeno ran pretty good too for me with LLE using a 2500k @ 4.5.

I'm having a issue with Sonic and the Secret Rings. I have the Zelda Wiimotion+ Wiimote, and I can't control Sonic at all. The game will freeze a bit after I open up the Wiimote configuration.

Wiimote works in other non Wiimotion+ games, so I'm not sure what the issue is.

More and more I found few reasons to play my consoles (I have all 3 of them). Multiplat looks much better on PC, Dolphin looks fucking amazing, and the same for the PS2.

I bought 10 PS2 RPGs that I missed last gen to play on my PS3, but then... viewing all these screens just makes me sad... really.

i'm having problems pairing up 2 real wii remotes, any tips?

I can run dolphin with 2 xbox controllers and 1 wiimote. Xbox controllers on slots 1-2, wiimote in slot 3 . When i go for the second in slot 4 it says i have two paired up, but then during gameplay the fourth controller works but not the third.

also when i click refresh, despite each wiimote showing up in a different slot, both vibrate.

My sister's boyfriend has birthday in a week and I was thinking about giving him Pikmin 1 as a present. He loves strategy games but he has most he finds interesting on a PC already. Also, he doesn't have a GameCube, nor a Wii. So I (as someone who only plays on consoles) have a few questions to NeoGAFs PC-experts:

1. Does Dolphin run Pikmin?
2. If yes: Can someone give me a guide to recommended settings / tell me what to do to get it running?
3. Can he play from the original disc or do I have to rip it somehow? Being a present, I'd really prefer if it was possible to play it off the original disc, else it feels a bit like an illegal copy imo.
4. Will a gaming-laptop of one year (playing for example Fifa 12 flawlessly) suffice?
5. Should I go for GCN or Wii version of Pikmin?

No. The game will need to be ripped.

I can't really answer the other questions, but he would need a Wii to rip the game. There are very, very, very few PC drives that can read Wii and GCN discs, and all of them are really old and not especially common.

And laptops are generally poor fits for emulation, at least with PS2/GCN games. Emulation relies heavily on pure clock speed, even with desktops you need to overclock to 3.5GHz or higher for some games, and that's just not feasible with a laptop.

Regarding compatibility (looked it up), Pikmin 1 is compatibile for both Wii and GCN, and Pikmin 2 GCN is compatible, but all three require LLE audio to avoid sound and music glitching. LLE audio is very CPU intensive, I wouldn't expect a laptop CPU to be able to run it properly in most cases, unless it's a quad core and the game supports a dedicated LLE core well (some do, some don't).

As it has to be ripped to be playable, I'll of course rip it for him. If I can get the specifications, would you be able to estimate if the game would run properly or if it's better not to bother? Sorry, I'm really not an expert in judging gaming-hardware for PCs...

It would really only help in the case you can find someone who has attempted it. Dolphin's (and PCSX2's) "system requirements" are all over the place and vary significantly depending on the game. Dealing with emulation is very different than normal PC games.

Tough to judge based on the Wiki page exactly what he'd need. Less than 2.5GHz seems too slow for proper sound and having lots of Pikmin at once at the very least, and with a laptop I kind of doubt he's going to have anything much faster than that, if at all.

Is there no way to easily rip Gamecube games? :( I have homebrew installed on my Wii and I can rip Wii games, but that doesn't work with Gamecube games does it?

Anyone tried Pandoras Tower, i never heard of this game, but the guy at the store said it was part of the Last Story, Xenoblade JRPG localization campaign or whatever.

I loved Xenoblade and The Last Story so i too the chance on this, I like the voice action, and the cahracter models are pretty damn good(the rest of the game is ugly though).
I though Dolphin would aliviate that ugliness but i cant seem to get this game to run at 100%.

It drops to ~20fps every few minutes and pretty much every time i swing my sword....very annoying.
IF anyone has settings or dolphin version suggestions im all ears.
I really want to enjoy this game.

P.S The Control Scheme is fun as fuck.

P.P.S Favorite part of the game so far.:

Frames drop randomly but 60 is the norm. Couple of audio problems though when I launch it through steam so I won't be doing that again.

I did play Pikmin New Control on dolphin last week and it ran fine apart from when Olimar went in water. Lots of slowdown there (~12 fps instead of solid 30 fps). Still one of my favorite games on GC and even better with the wiiremote.

This has probably been answered a million times so I apologize. I have the PAL version of Xenoblade. Does this need the patch to run at max fps? I seem to remember the talk about this.

I should finally be getting into Dolphin this week if my PC build goes successfully. This has been a long time coming, and I've been going crazy over these screenshots for a while now. :p

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
RE: Pikmin

How did you get 3,000 in only 2 days?

How did you reach the final area by day 5?

I beat the game a couple of days ago using Dolphin-3.0-631-gec0ddb4_L102_x64_ICC build.
Ran at full speed no problem at all with FPS drops. I did OC my core i5 760 up to 3.6ghz
