INDIE GAME : The Movie Thread: Out 12 June on DD | Steam | iTunes

Just finished watching it, really great and well-made. They picked some great personalities for this. You can't help but be impressed at the passion they all put into their games.

It seems weird that the whole rise of the indie scene really only started in 2008-ish. I'm really excited to see what all these guys are doing next.

Just finished it and found it super engaging. Whether the stories are skewed or not I feel like the film did a great job of making you feel like each of these projects(maybe less so with Braid) were make or break for these people's lives. Really glad I stayed up to watch it.

Team Meat has done a few interviews about their experience making Super Meat Boy, and the portrayal here seemed pretty consistent with what they've said elsewhere. I'm not as familiar with Phil Fish's and Jon Blow's stories, but all three games ended up taking significantly longer than they anticipated. I imagine Fish must have been in a pretty tight spot financially after losing his grant and having the game release two years later than planned.

Also, I guess someone should mention that the suicidal thoughts probably AREN'T an overdramatization. Because they usually aren't if you're playing in such a mentally demanding and draining game and the stakes is high over a long time, you know.

Currently watching it with the Team Meat commentary and it is hilarious.
Also gives a huge insight into how horrible they were feeling at the time.

They added one word in film and changed another word, I am not joking:

Tweeted IGTM yesterday to this thread, no reply but guess what?! 3gb update on Steam!

I knew what the change was already:

Just watched it, while it is a decent movie I was shocked at how socially awkward some of those guys were.
In a way it's a sad movie.
Also I wouldn't be surprised if one day, I open the newspaper and see that the Fez guy killed 3 people, dude is insane

If I get this on steam will I only get the HD file or is there some kind of SD version that comes with?
As my laptop won't be able to play the HD file.

He still had a bit of a childish spin on it. But yeah, the guy went through a lot of shit. I just wonder how much of it was his own fault, with a personality like that.

It's hard to get a good picture -- this film showed these guys at some pretty frustrating points of the process. I'm pretty much on the opposite end of the spectrum from Phil Fish, personality-wise, but I can kinda sympathize with him. The threat of having the project you've worked on for 3+ years taken away from you in a legal dispute or released to critical failure has to be pretty intense. Developing an indie game full-time seems like it could be pretty stressful, especially if it's your first game and you're not financially stable.

I watched it this morning, awesome movie. Such great insight of the Indie scene.

If you're interested in more insight (although with quite a bit less drama) I'd recommend the Infinite Ammo podcast (http://infiniteammo.ca/) and the IndieGames.com podcast (http://indiegames.com/podcast/). Both of them do a lot of in-depth interviews with indie developers and get into the design process a little more. IndieGames.com has a couple interviews with Team Meat that expand on their story quite a bit.

Is there any advantage to getting it off steam? Because I'd assume that buying it off the official website means the film maker gets all of the proceeds

Not really. As far as I know the Steam version doesn't have anything you can't download if you pay for a copy off the site. There are a few bonus videos, but it's all stuff that they released earlier for free.

Thank you for the recommendations. This is up my alley . And perfect timing, as I have been looking for some podcast to get into. Trying to get into programming, and the design phase, and behind the scenes are fascinating.

No problem -- I was kind of doing the same thing last summer, so I went on a pretty big indie gaming podcast kick, haha. I really liked Infinite Ammo -- it's hosted by Alec Holowka who made Aquaria (along with Derek Yu), so he contributes quite a bit of good insight about the development process himself. Only problem is that he doesn't record new episodes super often, I think he's been getting busier with his new game lately.

Yeah, the game must take a huge portion of his time. Podcast are no walk in the park either. Reading some of the interviews on the Indie stuff, pretty good. Good source of upcoming games too.

Really enjoyed this. Edmund clearly came off as the most likeable of the group. The only issue I had is some of the text overlays were kind of generic. "Xbox" instead of the Xbox 360, "Xbox" instead of the dashboard, etc. Nitpicky sure, but this is aimed at an "in the know" audience that would notice the inaccuracies. Having a segment focusing on lower profile indie games probably would have made for a more "complete" docu too.

Here's the Giant Bomb vid of SMB played in the film:

I finally got around to watching this tonight and I really liked. It really made me like Phil more. I never had a problem with him before but I don't see him as an ass like so many things online make him seem like. He's just very passionate about Fez. Also, I never got the impression that his ex-business parter was shown as a "bad guy." But his side of things was definitely needed.

This was pretty good, well done. I have new found respect for Phil Fish.

The Dyad guy really blew things out of proportions, I didn't see the movie portryaing the ex-partner as TEH BAD GUY, it was just Fish venting out his frustrations and blowing off steam.

Pretty douchey about the credits though, that's straight up lying. Maybe that's what he took offense about.

It's also not like they were portraying him as completely rational. The editing and camerawork were clearly trying to reflect a tired, sort of paranoid persona spewing a bunch of bile to keep himself going.

Decent documentary. So, what I learned about Indie devs....

- most hate mainstream games (makes sense, since they make indie games)
- they hate the idea of success ( until it happens)
- they kill themselves making games (just like regular devs)
- Phil Fish is such a full of himself, pompous ass. (which we already knew)

Only likeable guy in the whole movie, is Edmund. Glad SMB did well.

fixed that for ya

Tommy is the only one who says bad things about mainstream games, mostly.

Edmund plays COD with his wife.

Absolutely loved this. It tapped directly into the hopes and dreams of anybody who grew up with games and longed to create something that provides that magic. Its inspirational and emotional without being sappy in the slightest.

And man, some parts, especially with the MeatBoy guys, really got to me. I couldn't recommend this highly enough.

Anecdotally, I am none of those first three things.

Maybe I'm the fourth? It's hard to self evaluate. ; )

I'm such a boring interview.

"Yeah, man, I just...made a game. In my spare time. That's pretty much it. It came out and some people said it was pretty good and now I'm making another game."
You forgot the bit where you say that while dodging rotating poles and trying not to fall into water.

And you do it all for a girl you love...

You couldn't see it but I was actually coding DLC for Sequence as I fell into the water

Looks like I'll be the first of the dissenters. I didn't really like the movie. Perhaps it's because I was expecting something completely different than then a depressive movie about making Xbox live arcade games or I just didn't care about the introspective nature of the movie.

The scenes with Phil Fish and his unfiltered and non melodramatic scenes sprinkled with fits of rage, threats and obscenity were pretty entertaining - albeit he is French Canadian so that's to be expected. I also liked the Jonathon Blow scene in which he went into detail about the making of Braid and how it evolved from the prototype. The comparison of the prototype and the completed game was fascinating to me especially when you consider he had the core of the game working within days. But, other than that I fell asleep once and wondered when the movie would be over. Perhaps that's my biggest complaint is that I was expecting a movie that focused more on the development process and less on the personal stories.

Just finished watching it, I really liked the Team Meat stuff and not so much anything else. The Jon Blow parts were interesting enough, although there weren't a ton of them. I really felt like all the Phil Fish stuff was just there for the "drama" (business partner stuff, game crashing, etc.) I honestly kinda just wanted to see a whole documentary of the Team Meat guys because they seemed the most interesting of every one featured. A lot of really pretty shots though, so props on the technical side there.
