My friend went to see an 11:40am TDKR show and posted this pic of the empty theatre. Obviously AM shows are going to house less people overall, but empty?

I was talking w/ a friend. Our Regal usually has 1 or 2 cops on the weekends. I'm betting there will be more.

And yea, I'm done arguing on laws/guns we can save it for another thread.

All I know is that it's far too easy to acquire guns in this country and that this tragedy wouldn't have happened if we had stricter gun control laws.

Good point. Criminals and other people determined to get their hands on a gun would probabably just give up on crime if this were to happen.

You would have to have amazing control and wherewithal to identify and shoot the gunman in a dark, crowded theater immediately after the canisters of smoke/tear gas went off. The gunman didn't wait to shoot, either. Reports are that he was firing as soon as he threw the gas. I just don't see how a civilian with a gun is going to make that specific situation any better.

In a situation like that everyone focuses on the shooter. Its like when you get tunnel vision. I don't mean to imply that an armed citizen would have definitely helped, I'm just saying if they were there that they may have been able to end it. Either way this is still a hugely tragic event.

I won't be going to see the film anytime soon......especially after this just happened. No way, how could you not be thinking about the situation while watching the movie?

It would be the thread if a mod hadn't come into the thread and said take gun regulation talk elsewhere, to one of the many gun or politics threads. Or a new thread.

I didn't realize mods had chimed in on keeping that discussion out of the thread. I'll bow out. Either way, just a horribly sad and unfortunate situation in every way :(

Okay, this is the last reminder people are getting. Gun control shit - out of this thread. I have a concealed-carry banstick and I'm not afraid to use it.

I have a friend who may have gone and I can't get in touch with him either.
I'm feeling pretty nervous for you guys... hopefully it's just a situation where the cell networks are being hit hard and it's just a matter of time before you hear from them.

I was a freshman at VT when the shootings happened there so this kind of stuff always hits pretty hard for me, especially when I see people wondering where their friends and loved ones are.

Stay strong, guys.

fuck it, not taking the bait. Sorry.
There was a thread just recently where two people were holding people in a Internet cafe at gun point and some old ass dude at one of the computers pulled out a gun and shot at them making them flee. Situation handled.

Bouncer at a local bar said the guy was super laid back. Didn't say much but nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

The guy clearly had some mental issues. Most mental issues develop during your late teens or early twenties. We need to make a mental checkup a requirement of entering schools, just like we make physical checkups a requirement.

This is stupid. And what if someone has mental issues? Lock them up? Make them feel worse than they already might feel because of their condition? Preemptively keep them under watch? I get this is a tragedy, but this kind of response and generalization is ridiculous.

Where is that? Interesting.

I'm going to an 11 AM tomorrow morning, wonder how that'll be.

I can push stuff out? If I were In colorado and I lived in this town or I knew someone involved yea I would agree that I wouldn't be able to but as I'm over a thousand miles away, it won't stop me from enjoying the movie.

Is that wrong?

You need a dealers licsence to obtain anything fully automatic, so if it was actually automatic it wasn't obtained legally.

There are definitely selective fire AR-15s that are fully transferable. Especially in Colorado. That said they are not cheap, though from the sounds of things this guy had the money to get quite a lot of stuff.

I feel like most gaffers jump at the opportunity to lecture/flame other posters who post stuff that is inappropriate - while it may be valid at times, it is often better to not quote the inappropriate posts and just ignore the poster for sake of this thread

This should be a sticky at the top of the OT.

The last report I saw is that he went out through the door and propped it open, got geared up in his car, then came back in and started the shooting.

You can do that? I thought those doors go off if you exit through them or something. There should definitely be rules against that, even on the basic premise that people sneak into movie theaters that way

Any chance he has a timed explosive waiting to go off? That would really take the super villain/Batman crap to another level.

What are you talking about? Lock them up? Make them feel worse? No, you do the same thing you would do with any other LEGITIMATE DISEASE, you help them get therapy/treatment. Mental illnesses are diseases like any other, and it's time we treat them as such.

This is unreasonable. Also, we are not sure specifically what is wrong with this guy.

However, as a society there is such a big stigma surrounding mental illness that people are scared to seek help. A lot of people apply a lot of shame to having a mental illness. I think removing this stigma would help a lot.

I think that it is a discussion that needs to be had. But I agree with the people early ITT who wanted to keep it out of this thread.
ChiTown is posting updates from the stuff he is watching and the debrief will be happening soon and we are sure to get more info and news.
It will just turn into a big debate with people saying the same shit that circles round and round, like with the 'kid at a movie theater talk.'

Edit: Oops, didn't see Iapetus post again.

Am I right this time? The conference/debrief is happening soon? Mountain is two hours behind EST and it is 20 to 1 here?
I know I gave Euro-people some bad intel earlier with my time mix-up.

To those wondering about the emergency exit. In my experience they are never alarmed so people can use them to directly exit the theater and avoid the lobby.

The guy was in a PhD program, rigged his apartment with I'm guessing less than legal explosives, shot up a planned premiere of a major social event, complete with war garb and tear gas canister.

I'm all for stricter gun laws but I get tired of the soapbox stuff regarding that it could have been prevented if there were more laws. You can't uninvent guns no matter how much you want to. They exist and always will exist. And this guy's mind, and everything this guy planned wasn't some wacko with a 10 IQ on bath salts going nut, he obviously knew what he was doing and access isn't an issue even with strict laws for someone this calculated to do something this horrible.

The plain fact is, we live in a fragile world, no one can prevent anyone from killing you at any place or time publicly if they want to sacrifice their lives to do something that horrible.

This is unreasonable. Also, we are not sure specifically what is wrong with this guy. However, as a society there is such a big stigma surrounding mental illness that people are scared to seek help. A lot of people apply a lot of shame to having a mental illness.

Plus most people can't afford the help they require which is sad.

Might be worth putting that in the thread title since this is a mass shooting.

I don't disagree with you, I just think people should get fair warning.

Reporting that bottles of liquid, of unknown composition. Tripwires everywhere. Sending in a robot, if it trips the area, fire departments are there.

It probably wasn't even apparent where the shots were coming from to a lot of the people at first. This wasn't in broad daylight out in the open is what I'm saying. Plus, I thought I read he was wearing body armor. This just isn't a situation that I look at and think - if only someone had a gun! It just seems like the possibility of success in thwarting an attack of this kind is too remote.

But yes, the tragedy is what is important here and I don't want to get too hung up on this right now.

true. if there's anything we can actually learn from these shootings its how as a society we have to do a better job of diagnosing these people and dealing with it through therapy before it spirals out of control instead of the same old blame game we play every. single. time. that gets us nowhere

Yep. A lot of those exits in the movie theaters themselves are treated as just another exit.

What time is it?
My sister-in-law called me this morning to see if I had gone to catch a midnight showing by chance. What an awful thing to wake up to. Two members of her youth camp were working there last night. Thankfully they are okay. This is so sad.
