Lolo Jones on Twitter: Americans will do well in "da gun competition."

Yet another reason why most celebrities and athletes need to just stay OFF twitter:

The not so great Adventure of Lolo on Twitter

Continuing our lesson of why athletes should never tweet, may we present Lolo Jones, the American hurdler.

Jones is in London preparing for next week's 100-meter hurdles. In the interim, she's been keeping up to date on the progress of Team USA, including the narrow loss by the archery team to Italy in the gold-medal round.

That defeat compelled Ms. Jones to get on Twitter and post a message to her 189,000 followers.

lolojones: "U.S. Men's Archery lost gold medal to Italy but that's ok, we're Americans...When's da Gun shooting competition?"

This tweet would have been insensitive no matter when it was sent. Even if she meant that Americans are good at hunting, the connotation of violence jumps out to everyone. Coming eight days removed from one of the worst gun massacres in United States history makes it even worse. Throw in the fact that a Greek track star was expelled from the Olympics after sending a racist tweet earlier this week and it was like Lolo was competing in a triple jump of stupidity.

She won't get banned from the Olympics because the United States Olympic Commitee doesn't overreact to political pressure like the Greeks did. It should give Lolo some pause about the perils of over-tweeting.

Update: Lolo Jones defended herself from criticism. Note our careful avoidance of the word "apologized."

"sorry u guys only think of violence but I think of all the hunting I do w southerners in da south. Its impressive."

So, there. It's your fault you're thinking of violence while people are still recovering in the hospital from an attack that brought upon the most casualties in American history.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Why does she talk like she's black?

Oh look a random, sarcastic poster who didn't need to click on the thread but decided to anyways to made a stupid ass post in order to get attention.

? Seems like it is a big deal out of nothing. The story in the OP, that is.

If you're talking about that stupid shit Bacon said I'm certain CaptYamato wasn't referring to that with his comment.

I honestly find it hard to even be offended by what she said given how in grained gun culture is in American culture.

Are we really getting touchy over this? No harm intended but the frequent use of "da" corresponds a lot with how some African Americans talk in "the hood" and the white people in particular trying to emulate that accent to sound cool.

Sorry, didn't want to offend anyone or try to make a racist comment.

Yeah, just something for people to pretend to be outraged over.

No one's getting touchy, what you said was just stupid and not just because of some sort of polical correctness, but also because she's part black. It's like asking why does Barrack Obama talk white.

Your picture, matched with the comment, only makes people want to punch you.

Ok I'm just going to leave this thread and let the mods decide what to do but these reactions were not what I was aiming for. I'm just a Western European kid who does not understand this whole situation and that's why I normally stay away from these kind of topics.

Why is it moronic? We Americans love our guns, this sounds like some faux outrage on some have your cake and eat it too bullshit.

Her phony "apology" where she tried to cover by saying "Oh I was just talking about how it's fun to go hunting down south" pretty much invalidates this scenario.

Lol at people crying over Bacon's comment but hardly a soul gives a shit when some American is ignorant over 7/7. Typical.

But silly thing to say on twitter.

Yeah, I don't get the issue here. Because the Aurora shootings wan't too long ago? Come on. They have marksmanship competitions all over the U.S.

It's definitely not the same as archery, but I bet it'd make a decent Olympic sport. Looks like it already is.

wait, how does that invalidate her "apology"(which she should have never done in the first place)?

you don't think that just maybe she legitimately took up a liking for hunting in the south? Especially given the proclivity that southerners/midwesterners have for hunting and the like? Seriously? I didn't see the tweet in question but what you're describing is phony because of what exactly?

I don't get it. What's wrong with her comment?

EDIT: Wait, so mentioning shooting = Aurora? LOL, OK. Human targets aren't used in the shooting competition, are they?

I don't see any problem with her tweet. People are way to sensitive.

It might be bad timing, but that's about it. I think you have to go out of your way to tie her tweet to the Aurora shooting. It's not that big of a leap from archery to shooting, and their relationship with American's love of hunting either.

smh, screw walking all over this eggshell nonsense. To tie this to the Aurora shooting, you'd have to be reaching farther than Dhalsim.
