I know it's been said time and time again, but Nintendo's policy of releasing some colors in some markets but not others is so frustrating. I'd love to drop $200 and join the ranks of 3DS owners, but I'd like a simple all white or all black option but that's apparently asking too much, so I continue to wait.

I think I like Blue a bit more. Red is a little dull for me judging by some of those pics.
I don't know if I should wait or not... the idea of the huge screens is extremely appealing, but the color choices really aren't for me. That they are probably releasing a new color for the holidays make me skeptical to get one day 1...
Why no white NoA?
I picked up my 3DS before PAX East and had a good amount of playtime there and a little after, but it's fallen off since then. Damn thing makes my hands cramp up on certain games. I think the larger screen and footprint of the XL may make me play some more.
Hoping some American retailers have some nice looking trade-in deals from the original to the XL. Amazon is giving about $88 for the red one, but that's still $112 for the upgrade. Ack!

I'm interested in the 3DS XL, but I have a few concerns.
1. I still play my DS games on a phat DS. Yes, I know, it's ancient. However I never got a DS lite because I hate the buttons on it, too squishy. And the DSi was a tad too expensive for me when it came out. I also don't like the upscaling of DS games on the DSi XL. So, does the 3DS XL play DS games better than the DS phat? I have a 3DS, but DS games look like crap on it. 1:1 is too small and stretched it's too blury for me. I would only be using the 1:1 mode on the 3DS XL as well.
2. Is pixel separation that bad? Can you really notice it when games are in motion and you're a good distance away from the screen?
3. Finally, do 3DS games look noticeably worse? I really think some games would benefit from the extra size like OOT, but if the games look really blurry then I'm not so sure.

How can the screens be scratched with the little bumps thats on the XL? Isn't that suppose to raise the lid so the screens don't touch?
Oh man. I've had my launch unit repaired twice. My XL is clear so far, but fuck, if I get scratches again I will go fucking mad. I'm not sticking shit to my XL. I guess I'll keep my glasses cloth in there. Sorry dude...

Soon as I get mine out the box, I'm putting screen protectors on, at least the bottom screen.
Well they didn't seem to fix the 3DS yet, didn't fix it for the revision, so I kinda doubt they'll fix it for the NA release.
Since I'll have the OG 3DS also maybe I'll just keep sending it in for repair every few weeks or so, maybe if we all do that they'll get the message? =)

Yeah so just chiming in to say my scratching has gotten gradually worse since last week.
Definitely permanent marks on the screen.
I would've taken precautions by putting screen protectors on, but none were available at launch!
So how was I supposed to prevent this? Leave it open forever? They can have it back soon.

I'm not happy to hear this. How could they fuck the XL up, too? You would think repair data from the OG3DS would warn them of the screen issue. Apparently the 3DS (+XL) top/s must be to heavy?
They should have just made a lip, like the DSi/Lite/XL...

I got this same case in blue for my DSi XL at Five Below for $4.99 a few months ago. It's fantastic. If it is fitting the 3DS XL properly, it looks like I need to go back for another!
Glad you like the blue. Mine should arrive tomorrow. Meanwhile I'm in the process of getting my hands on a Midnight Blue DSi XL pen to fit in the stylus slot (harder than might think here in the UK). My 3DS XL be pimpin'.

Yeah, it's one of the reasons I decided to just go for one with a black interior instead. I was thinking it didn't make a difference, but after trying it, it really does help having that black background.
So is it just the people putting it in their pockets and the people with scratches out of the box having problems? My launch 3DS had screen scratching problems due to me putting it in my pocket, but on my replacement system I got from Nintendo I've stopped putting it in my pocket. I haven't had any problems with scratching since. Would this be the same case for the XL? I don't want the screen to become scratched again.

Ahhh I see! This in addition to the inevitable dis-colouration definitely makes the white inferior to me.
Mine was mint out of the box, the scratching has only occurred since having it in jeans pockets a couple of times.

As much as I loved white, initially - it looks like a primered, unpainted thing in all of these pics. I'm sure it's really white, but the problem with a white device, it takes on the lighting around it. When I was choosing my iPad 2 last year (had a black iPad 1 the year before and wanted a different color), I chose black because the white looked cream from the soft store lighting around it. White devices also have a weird, slight black border that outlines around the screen...dunno, not a fan.
I don't want a device that always looks grey, dingy, dirty, takes on grime in its crevices....etc.
Lastly, it looks unfinished. It's really not that big of a deal. If the outer plates can be changed, imagine a black handheld, with the white outer plates ^_^

Is there a gap between the screens when you look from the side on your unit?

Screw that. I should be able to put the damn thing in my pocket without causing permanent screen damage. I refuse to believe they didn't come across this problem in their testing. What the hell?
Does the manual warn against closing the system? Against <gasp> putting it in a pocket or bag or hell even a case?

You gotta either choose one now, or choose one later. You have to make peace and not have anger, if you are choosing now. It's the risk you take, for later.
Example: I'd chosen to buy a Midnight Purple on May 20. I preordered the unit, believing that e3 would be all Wii U...a revision didn't seem likely, especially with the purple coming out that close. Well, Nintendo didn't reveal a revision at e3 - but slightly after - during a Nintedo Direct.
I wasn't angry. In fact, I thought in the promo shots that the XL was hideous as fuck. Like an inflated Fisher Price/Nintendo abomination. Hands on events started appearing and the device has grown on me. Come a long way for its first reveal.
In fact the white - which was the only one I wanted - is at the Silver level. No desire for it or silver.

Yeah, although the gap does disappear when I push on top of the lid so it's an issue of the screens being 'pushed' together when I'm walking
Yeah definitely, avoid pockets and you'll be fine. That's what I'll do if/when I get this model replaced.

That's exactly the problem. I'll be using screen protectors again and I have some nub things that I used to keep this from happening on my OG 3DS that I will use on the XL.
Yeah, I won't be mad if it comes out. Once it does, I'll buy it myself.
Maybe if it's easy to take off the top and bottom shells, I'll make myself a Black unit with White exterior. Would not look too bad, I'd think!
I'll probably make do with my launch unit and get another, better color next year around the holidays when the color selection should be vastly improved. I don't think there would be anything big next holiday for me, aside from maybe PS4.
Also, for anyone with skill changing colors in PS, could someone make a mockup for a White/Black unit, preferably with a real pic as a base? I'm interested in seeing what it would look like
