Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
She's 16 and she swam faster than lochte ? Ya, I think the coach maybe onto something

Either that or Americans continue to be the sorest sporting losers in the world.

I always considered Michael Jordan the greatest athlete of all time, irrespective of how many Olympic medals some other guy wins. Still, its a pretty amazing achievement.
I hope Phelps gets one more medal, just because 20 is a nice tidy number.

Late reply but this is correct. Michael Jordan is the greatest athlete ever, not a swimmer.

Bo Jackson was and is a greater athlete than Jordan, if we're going by the core definition. He was faster, stronger, and was fairly successful in multiple sports, where Jordan dominated in one and absolutely sucked in the others.

Jordan's the greatest pro athlete, maybe. Certainly the most celebrated. But as far as physical ability and degree of difficulty + individual achievement go I think Phelps is more impressive.

Swimming is a very technical sport. Butterfly is completely different to frontcrawl which is different to breaststroke. You'll have some swimmers that strong in different disciplines and weaker in others. Phelps, for example, is relatively weak at breaststroke. Competitive swimming is open to a number of different specialities.

should axe the individual events and keep the IM. just like how weight lifting got rid of giving medals for snatch and clean & jerk separately and combined them into a single event.

haha, when the President tweets you - no matter if you are Michael Phelps - you can't help but sound like a teenage girl when you answer him back.

Kinda sucks that Obama didn't tweet the other three guys that were in the race and won the gold for Phelps, but I suppose if he did that then he'd have to do that for all the Team USA athletes. Although if I were him, I'd do just that!

Most Chinese are quite apathetic towards the olympics. They read about it a bit online or watch the daily CCTV news. They basically, just knows China wins a shit ton of medals every day. They know the absolute biggest Chinese stars name. However, they do not have this Live cult following like in the west.

However...

The day China wins over USA in basketball....oh boy... That day will be remembered and honoured with an state holiday.

not this one or the next but in 12 - 20 years why not?

Well they have reduced their investment in training after Beijing first of all. They have always been weak in swimming and track, and I don't see that changing any time soon. I think they realize their strengths, and have tried to play to them with the events they compete in. It can change, but it is very unlikely even 20 years down the road.

while i don't know if she is doping, I think it's a little unfair to say this. Chinese are some of the most notorious cheaters, dopers and exploiters on Earth when it comes to global sporting events. We're not even that far removed from the last Olympic Chinese cheating scandal (in Beijing 2008, multiple female gymnasts were under 16 years old; one girl had articles and paper work showing her birthday and repeatedly confirming she was 14, to which the Chinese government promptly went around the web trying to delete the evidence).

It's different from America because GENERALLY, there is not a systematic attempt at cheating. Individual athletes cheat, but it's not systemic at the team level. China, that is to say the government that instituted the Soviet-type training regiment/camps for their athletes and changed their medal counts around, has routinely been caught cheating.

You are delusional. There is no systematic doping going on. Deal with it.

Give me some real examples please? Please, show me evidence of this systematic doping and when China have been caught doping?

Fact is, the majority of Chinese gold, comes from sports, where doping never ever played a big role.

Your generalisation of a whole country and their athletes is disgusting. This is China 2012 and not GDR 1980. Wake up.

EDIT: Btw, if there is anywhere, there is systematic doping. It is the american professional leagues. NFL, NHL, NBA etc. take a look at their summer camps...

From nothing to four Golds at the 1992 World Champs and the 1992 Olympics to 12 Golds at the 1994 World Champs. That kind of improvement is questionable. At the 94 Asian Games, 11 Chinese women swimmers tested positive for dihydrotestosterone; at the 96 Olympics they only won a single gold medal, and no positive tests. 98 World Champs and four swimmers tested positive, plus human growth hormone was found in a swimmer's luggage. Before the 2000 Olympics, China removed four women from its squad for odd test results and no swimmer from China earned any medals. At the 2004 Olympics, none of the swimmers tested positive and they earned one gold medal. That is a a lot of up and down in the medal count, and a lot of positive drug tests.

Like I said, I think they improvement lately is due to a change in coaching. But, they have a pretty bad history of cheating.

First of all, the catch-all phrase I used intentionally is 'cheating.' But there have been many, many instances of Chinese cheating, and hate to break it to you, it is systemic. You have to be almost comically ignorant of history to deny this.

All throughout the 80s and 90s Chinese athletes were caught in doping/cheating scandals. There was wide evidence about the fact that this cheating was actually state-sponsored. And, it STILL happens

This is in 2012. It's important to note that Li Zhesi is Ye's teammate, by the way. Very good examples they have there.

This is a scandal that proved once again the Chinese state had a hand in covering up cheating. From the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

And more:

Those would include when breaststroker Yuan Yuan, a silver medalist at the 1994 World Championships, was caught trying to smuggle 13 vials of banned growth hormone in a thermos flask in her luggage into Australia ahead of the 1998 worlds or when seven swimmers tested positive for steroids at the 1994 Asian Games.

That decade of shame — a sports scientist at San Diego State tallied 32 Chinese swimmers caught for drug offenses in the 1990s — and China's subsequently victorious bid for the 2008 Olympic Games forced change and the establishment of a world recognized anti-doping program.

Still, the official Xinhua News Agency reported 16-year-old Li Zhesi, who swam the last leg of China's 400 medley relay victory in world-record time at the 2009 Worlds, tested positive in March for EPO, a banned blood-boosting hormone.

And this is China's IMPROVED state. During the 90s and 80s, there were literally dozens upon dozens of cases of doping and cheating. You either know nothing about the subject, are from China and are desperately trying to provide propaganda for them, or you're just being intentionally coy.

I don't get the continual arguing. At this time she is officially clean. She's been tested multiple times and samples will be kept for testing over the next 8 years. If in 8 years time a new test is created for an as yet unknown PED then she'll get caught IF she has taken it.

In the meantime, she's done a fantastic job, just like Phelps did when he first appeared at his first Olympics and destroyed people and got plenty of medals and records.

Oh I don't know if she's doping at all. I just want to push back against the idea that the reason people are skeptical is because they're sore losers.

When someone (or some place, as is the case here) continually does something like doping and cheating over and over again, it's only natural people speculate as to whether or not they're doing it again.

Look at america's track (lol) record during the same time period.

I am 99.999% sure this chick is doping, just like most other top level athletes, which is why I think it is dumb to single out any country. It's absurdly easy to dope, and you are at a huge disadvantage if you don't.

Haha, ridiculous to use this as evidence. The Chinese list is missing dozens of names I can think of with little effort; it's clearly a case of people putting more effort into being complete about the American side, and not yet putting in the work for the Chinese list.

Similarly, it's a difference in time scale. The Chinese did not get serious about competing at a global scale until the 80s, and that is when their doping scandals exploded. The American list contains athletes for generations longer. The government has not been shown to sponsor cheating; the Chinese government has been.

And finally, my post does not endorse American cheating. There are countless examples of American cheaters too.

Ya. Bringing up China with the track record we have of all sport is just stupid.

Exactly, 142 americans caught for doping...compared to 11 chinese...

for instnace, many we forget such as sprinter Chryste Gaines who won gold medals in Atlanta olympics.

too bad the Chinese list is almost hilariously incomplete

I'm not even an expert on the subject and I can probably add a dozen more entries to the list. the one survey in the 90s showed 32 cases alone in a short period of time.

Nobody is endorsing cheating of any kind; American individuals cheat all the time. It's simply not systemic. The American government clearly doesn't endorse it and has wide ranging rules against it. The Chinese government, on the other hand, has pretty much sponsored the cheating for thirty years.

Can you read? He said they have a history of "cheating" and their sports training programs are notoriously harsh and cruel. While I don't think she was doping if there WAS a country that was doing it I think the vast majority of people would think China is the #1 pick because they have the resources and will to stay ahead of testing tech.
