Blizzard's Community Manager: WE ROLL WHILE YOU B*TCHES HATE (also: fecal matter)

It's weird to me that a Community Manager at Blizzard would sound like the teenage boys I play Counter-Strike with. Not only that, but this invented reality of Brevik making "scathing remarks" about Diablo III is some Fox News level bullshit.

How embarrassing.

The more I think about it...the more I think it has to be fake. (or I hope it's fake)

It's just so...crazy that a community manager for Blizzard would do this. It's SO unprofessional.

Until they become the next to sell out. It'll happen eventually. The pattern has repeated itself more times than you can fathom.

But they're Polish. This is a curve-ball, and they very well could dodge the ego/sell-out traps. Only time will tell, but cultural differences do factor in on some level.

For the people saying this isn't newsworthy, how about you go read one of the other several thousand GAF threads instead of patting your own backs in here?

There are tons of reasons why this is a story worth discussing, and while certain fans will always take it a little too personally, if you can't see why this is something being talked about, then maybe reassess what you're doing on a gaming forum? Especially one so invested in talking about developers as often as we do here.

but dood then nobody will be able to bask in the warmth of their smug sense of superiority

I'll just say this:

Blizzard seems like a very arrogant company right now. I don't know how it was like during SC, WC3, D2 or early WoW days. But that's the impression I get now.

This arrogance is a direct result of their absolutely phenomenal and exceptional success with SC, D2 and WoW. And I feel like that has gotten to the company's head.

On a serious note, to those saying why we give a fuck what they are saying: We are paying hard earned money to support products we love. In return, we expect the same level of positivity and love. If we, the consumer, criticize any aspect of the game, we do it cause we have invested time, money and emotions into it. You expects the developers to appreciate our point of view; whether it can be implemented or not is a complete different story but the fact is that all I personally care about is appreciation for our passion.

When you have assholes like these who are straight up laughing and saying fuck you, do you really feel confident in something you paid for without hesitation?!

Some of you are too soft for this shit and are afraid to voice constructive criticism. Let them know that whether they agree or disagree, their attitude towards the community will be greatly reflected on current and future projects.

Is this a parody?

I wonder what is going through Morhaime's mind right now.

Probably won't hear a peep out of a Blizzard employee for a while now unless they are under direct orders to do it as their job i.e. CMs sticking exclusively to the official forums.

Let it be known that you can trip through shit twice in one day.

My favorite thing about this whole mess is how reasonable the original interview that supposedly caused offence was. HEY WE'RE BLIZZARD SOMEBODY SAID WORDS ABOUT US LETS THROW A TEMPER TANTRUM LIKE CHILDREN. And then people pointed that out. MORE TANTRUMS.

Just watching how WoW has developed over the years, and not just its general direction, but how they've responded to feedback, how they've changed game systems, as well as watching how they've handled Diablo 3, I've gotten a general feeling that many of the higher-ups there have developed very fragile and very bloated egos.

I can understand how they can come to dislike their own community, though, and how that plays into being sensitive to criticism in general. Usually the most vocal people, the ones they hear the most, are the unreasonable ones, or ones who have no idea what they're talking about. I think having to listen to that kind of stuff so much, and to have to put up with so much of the idiocy has put them into defensive mode, where all of a sudden anybody who talks poorly of them gets written off or mocked. When you seem to always be dealing with unreasonable and unknowledgeable critics, it's easy to slip into assuming everyone is evil, dumb, etc., even when they're being constructive or otherwise mild in their criticisms.

I can see where they'd be especially touchy with a guy who, if you're looking for an angle and are paranoid enough, can be seen as saying "Well, they screwed the pooch. Our old team was awesome they can't beat us." Of course, he didn't say that, but I could believe it that people like Jay Wilson are that temperamental when it comes to games they've made.

Just a shame to watch them fan the flames like this. (Or even start the fire to begin with.)

That facebook comment sounds more arrogant then insulting.

Doesn't matter. It is the negativity about it all which is easy to see. What makes it worse is that the guy works at Blizzard so, despite what people may or may not suggest, his opinion will likely be thought of as the same as Blizzard's opinion. Many in this thread have already construed it to be so.

That's why they have those little warnings about such-and-such employees' opinions and statements are not representative of the company they work at. The problem here is that there's no such fine writing to hide behind.

Both of the people involved today are not OG Blizzard though. There's the difference. The guys who used to belong to a little company called Silicon & Synapse (heck, even some of the design & programming guys who were hired for WoW originally) are quite humble. I've never seen some of the older guys throw their shit outside of Metzen saying something to a fan that could be implied as insulting. The last big bust-up was the "Bus Shock" fiasco and that concerned a CM.

I don't think it's not newsworthy but if we have to post a new thread for every development of someone at Blizzard acting stupid in this affair we're going to quickly drown in them. Because this won't be the last of it. At the very least a company-wide "stupid acting like fucking children" memo from Mike Morhaime has to leak before this is over.

Sure, I was just making an observation.

Blizzard needs a serious house cleaning and an infusion of new talent. All these guys still there when World of Warcraft got big, need to hit the highway.

They need people with new design philosophies, and people who haven't been bathed in the taint of the current design philosophies of management. Those people have been scarred and there is no hope.

In a perfect world, they would burn it to the ground and start over. But that won't happen. What will happen is that they will continue on their current path until they hit rock bottom. The place where Bioware is just about at.

I hope everyone thats involved in this shit gets fired. Its sad that a little turd like this acting unprofessionaly has a job over some of the people that have been layed off this generation. Its amazing that a community manager of all people acts like this, I could understand one of the devs since they probably dont know too much about publuc relations, impact of social media, marketing and all that shit that the community guy should know.

Actually I am not afraid to voice constructive criticism but I can't blame them at all for saying what they said and I believe that alot of what is said would have been said privately before but since it's on Facebook, it's public. There are certainly valid criticisms toward Blizzard and Diablo 3 but there's just as much criticism that is bullshit and really shows the lowest pits of the internet on almost every forum.

Should people who work for video game companies not be allowed to have opinions?
Having opinions isn't the same as having freedom from those opinions being scrutinized. Especially if they're voiced freely into the ether.

I know Jay personally. Worked with him for years. He's a cool dude, rightfully proud of his work and hella smart...who said something publicly he probably shouldn't have. It doesn't taint my view of him. Doesn't mean he can't be criticized for it, though. That's how it works.

Criticism is not the same as being fired.

You can bitch about him on message boards, I guess, firing him seems absurd.

Community managers shouldn't post their opinions anonymously on a trolling account. That's right up there with viral marketers as the scourge of the internet.
