Sept. 24, 2012 -- Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter is the likely source of a salmonella outbreak that so far has sickened 29 people in 18 states.

Four people needed hospitalization. No deaths have been reported. Those sickened in the outbreak range in age from 1 to 77 years. Half the cases are in children age 7 and younger; three-fourths of cases are under age 18.

Trader Joe's stores sold the product nationwide, through its stores and online. On Friday, the company issued a nationwide recall of the product.

CDC, state, and local officials had been looking for the source of an outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney infections that began on June 11. The investigation suggests that people became ill after eating Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter.

All 14 ill people interviewed so far report shopping at Trader Joe’s locations across the United States. Twelve (86%) of these 14 people report eating Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter made with sea salt in the week before becoming ill.

The product was sold in 16-ounce plastic jars. All product code dates are included in the recall. People who have purchased the peanut butter may return the product for a full refund.

Investigators are still looking at whether other foods mainly sold at Trader Joe's might also be contaminated.

Children under 5 years, older adults, and people with weak immune systems are particularly vulnerable to salmonella food poisoning.

Symptoms of salmonella, for most people, include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps some 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. After four to seven days, most people recover without treatment.

Some people develop severe diarrhea and need hospital care. Rarely, salmonella bacteria escape the gut and enter the blood, where they spread to other parts of the body. Such infections can be fatal if not treated promptly with antibiotics.

I've never even seen a Trader Joe's in person. All I've heard is mythical tales from the internet about how glorious it is.

It really is the best grocery chain in America. I just wish we had them here in Florida.

Tell me about it. I went back to NYC for a little less than 2 weeks. Trader Joes is the best.

And I had some of this Peanut Butter :|

I guess I'm okay, it's been about a week since I ate some and I'm not dead yet so I guess everything is good.

I feel sorry for the people who got sick. BUt they shouldn't have been shopping at an overrated overpriced low food quality store.

Wegmans is where it's at.

*Disclaimer - I shop at Trader's Joe for the cheese.

Overrated perhaps, but overpriced? Definitely not in Cali, buddy.

American peanut butter is rancid. Literally.

Like if they used old stale peanuts where all the lipids have oxidized to entirely lethal compounds.

Peanut butter? Shit, everyone cool's moved on to their cookie butter. That is the SHIT.

edit: oh hey sort of beaten.

Seriously though, the cookie butter is ridiculous.

I think I had salmonella in college once. Was locked in bed in a cold, hard sweat for a solid day. Sitting up for any length of time resulted in feeling like I was going to throw up. I've not eaten anything Alfredo sauce since.

Was memorable for how horrible I felt and because I threw up...which was the only time I have in about 15 years.

I only remember the fever and how my entire body ached at the smallest movement. I've also avoided a particular food since then, in my case fried/grilled fish at cheap-ass hotels.

Worst summer ever.

I once got sick via eating bad fish from a small hole in the wall sea food restaurant in a backwater coastal town in Mississippi. I probably deserved it all things considered-the place was a small poorly constructed shack. Nobody else was there and the guy said "Y'all are the first customers we've had in days. Drinks on da house".

Worst thing was the fish not only being overpriced was store bought and still partially frozen.

My wife and I both got ill from eating chicken at a deli. Not sure if it was salmonella but we were fine until about 48 hours after we ate. I was sick for two days. Only time in my life I have had massive diarrhea while simultaneously puking into a garbage can. Even after my stomach was empty even a little bit of water made me dry heave.

It's really just a pretentious grocery chain that is too expensive and doesn't taste any better then anything else.
