Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

They ban 60fps-ers but not cheaters? Yeah, GFWL is bad, but could it be that bad?
Exactly. Until noted otherwise, it's a troll.

Trainers quite literally, disable GFWL's cheating features. the 60fps mod does sort of the same thing.

While this does indicate I was incorrect in my last post, this is honestly even more bothersome as it indicates that if MS were to ever clean up the online in the game they'd have be banning the legit users who used the 60fps mod as well as the cheaters as they both use the same exploit to function.

If I had any indication that they actually gave a shit about cheaters I would hesitate to use or suggest using the 60fps patch. But I don't think that's the case.

But I don't think that's the case.

Ultimately neither do I, heh. While it's disheartening that this means we likely won't ever see the game's online be up to par, I think preserving the 60fps fix for a later generation of hardware for when most will be able to brute force 60fps with no problem is arguably more important. Mostly because I don't foresee the cheaters sticking around that long ;)

Yeah, overall I'd rather everyone have the freedom to mod the game to their whim rather than prevent it for the sake of stopping cheaters. And I was in the camp that was semi-worried about cheaters being on the PC version. Who cares. You die to a cheater, big deal. It's not even very common from my experience and there's plenty of people who like to actually play the game.

Trainers would not be able to run unless they injected (i dont know exactly how it works, granted) into the same memory pointer location an "all is well, please ignore" type of data so that way the info does not trigger when it does a check every couple seconds to see if you've cheated.

Another way is it could be injecting null info into the data gfwl uses to store if you're cheating or not, or into the areas of ram the actual cheat protection is stored, thereby going "well I'm running, and I'm sending my anti cheat info and I'm not hearing anything back, it must be working!"

So it's effectively.. circumventing the cheat system. The ol' reach around.

Wouldn't the 60fps patch have to do the same thing to run?

I get a stable 60fps (56-60 round about) in the opening areas, as soon as I go to New Londo or Blighttown the framerate gets very sporadic. Dropping as low as 27-30 frequently, SMAA/SSAO at mid settings @1080p native and set, so even though I'd kill to play at a solid 57-60 at all times, for serious gameplay it's staying at 30fps. But damn does it feel good to play at 60fps all the way through to Firelink and Undead Burg, got my hopes up it would remain steady!

Specs were:

i7 2600k 4.4GHz
GTX 690 (stock)

Edit: And yes, I get the same frame drops around Darkroot Basin as previously mentioned. One of the most jarring areas.

I wish there was a way to just make the game *work* better, heh. I have a 2500k @ 4.4GHz and an OCed 670 and running the game at 1080p/810 DOF the drops are so random. Blighttown, sure, I'll get drops to 30fps looking in certain areas, but my GPU will be sitting at 30% usage not even fully boosted and CPU only about ~50% usage on the cores, on average. MAKE ME WORK HARDER ._. That Darkroot Basin path area too, ~30% GPU use (no boosting even!), ~35% CPU use. I hate you Dark Souls, because of what you could have been.

Ohhhhhh well, back to 30fps and stunning IQ. (Maybe Durante will ascend to another god level and I'll come back to do NG++ with flawless 60fps, as I did NG+ when Durante went to god+ and added SSAO =D)

I have noticed "the traverse the light" gates seem to be the main problem in maintaining 60 fps, or where there is particle effects such as at the hydra, if you notice in the pathway between darkroot garden/basin it always drops as you face towards the hydra, no matter how far away you are.

Same for me, with a weaker system though. I think that confirms that you can't bruteforce the game to steady 60FPS. As long this game gets patched somehow, no chance.

I'm having trouble keeping my FPS at 30 when fighting Sif. Everything else in the game so far ran smooth. I already diabled SMAA and SSAO, but it doesn't help. Is this common?

I had no problems at Sif (except, you know, having to fight a big loyal puppy made me feel bad and I had to go look at pictures of dogs for a while afterwards). I was expecting to get slowdown whenever he jumped over me and the camera went inside his fur, like how the PS3 version always slowed down at Firelink when the camera went into the bird's feathers, but it was fine.

C2D E7200 @ 3.8ghz, 560@900mhz, 1080p, 810 DOF, SMAA, SMAA, blur.

Sif (and other furry enemies), fog gates, bonfires, and boss spell effects slow down the game because of large amounts of alpha blending. It's a direct fill rate / memory bandwidth limitation, and the only way to prevent it is reducing the rendering resolution. SMAA and SSAO are a rather fixed cost per frame, they don't really matter in that regard.

Thank you for the explanation. I noticed lowering my rendering resolution from 2560x1440 to 1920x1080 alleviated some of the issues, but especially when walking toward the big pink fog door Sif was behind, there is still noticable stuttering. I otherwise only get framedrops when bonfire resting or backstabbing enemies while close to the camera.

I guess most of these are the same issue then. I'll enable SMAA and SSAO again then, since otherwise I had no problems with it.

finally bought this game last night and got the latest DSFix version:

i'm getting a weird issue where when i talk to NPCs, there's a weird transparent gray overlay and the subtitles are only partially visible. anyone know how to fix this?

i tried messing with the HUD options and even changing them to default but no dice.

please help

The overlay is normal, it comes up everytime there are subtitles.
The fact that is broken in ahalf is not.

the overlay covers the whole screen tho.

actually, gonna disable HUDOptions and see if it fixes anything. i merely changed the values to default before.

edit: huzzah, so yes, disabling the HUDOptions fixed it completely for me.

You can set a button to toggle the improved HUD. So you can turn it off easily for when you talk to NPCs, then turn it back on when you're done talking to them.

Are there known issues?
=======================
- At vertical resolutions higher than 720 the sun may not be rendered correctly under some circumstances. This is under investigation, any insight is appreciated.
- When using custom HUD settings damage numbers and subtitles are not handled correctly

Also, your screenshot tells me that you should get this:

(Most essential texture replacement mod currently available IMHO)

Does anyone have any ideas why it's not working for me? I'm running an ATI 6950, 8gb of ram, and an i5 2500K, so my computer should be able to run this game at mostly 60 frames.

I also have a problem with the fps fix. Previous version with an earlier DSFix worked perfecty, with the whole of Sen's and Anor Londo at a steady 60fps, dropping only at bonfires because of the SSAO problem.
Now it's mostly 30fps sometimes going up to 60. Something is clearly wrong, but I don't have it in me to figure out what. :-(

One other thing. Went down to Demon Ruins now and in a lot of places fps drops to 15. I checked cpu and gpu utilization, both are under 40%, so I don't understand why performance is this bad. Any ideas?

(I have all power mngmnt options set to max performance)

Is the giant fog gate up? I get the same performance drop in the Demon Ruins until I beat the boss. As soon as the fog clears I get 30 fps again.

It's funny how such a simple looking effect can cause performance problems.

If you mean the fog gate before Ceaseless Discharge, then no, it's not up. Btw, when you defeat the boss, a lot of the lava disappears, so it might not be the fog gate itself that is causing problems for you, but all the lava.

Anyway, my problem is really not with this specific area, my problem is that I get performance drops even though my system is running at a very low utilization.

That's just how the engine rolls. There is not much we can do about it. Game should even run with 60FPS on a sub par system, the graphics are just bad (while asthetically pleasing, sure, but still).

I just turned on some of the graphic options that Durante alloted in the fix.

Holy mother of god. This game looks really damn good.

Does anyone get fog walls and unactive bonfires, but without the accompanying invasion?

This happens to me all the time. It gets cured by reloading the game, but it is still annoying.

I assumed that was Live struggling to make the connection.

Anyway, hit the Demon Ruins a few days ago and holy frame drops batman. It's the only area of the game I've had lower than 30 on PC, and for no good reason! Madness.
