any info yet on parental controls? Eg if I download ZombieU, I don't want my kids' accounts to be able to access it.

From Cheesemeister earlier in the thread:

"What are the Parental Settings?

Depending upon the child, ratings system-based age limits and other usage restrictions can be put in place. See below for details."

That's from the FAQ in the instructions.

I work at Best Buy and as of monday we haven't received any consoles. Will be glad to update when we do.

Hey Poker,

Just curious, I pre-ordered my system at best buy off their huge glowy kiosk and I've never used them before. Should I be concerned at all about them having one for me when I get there? I won't be able to make it in until the afternoon.

- It's better playing on the wii u pad than on a big screen hdtv

- more imperssive, closer to the action, prefers gaming this way

- predicts Dragon Quest 10 will be massively popular

- wii tv remote is very convenient

- thinks nsmbu is too similar but like the challenges

- can use the wii u pad in several rooms though in limited sense ( needs the rooms to be next to each other)

- different ways of playing adds more value (#game changer)

- can continue to game while his girl friend watches tv !

- battery problems (3-5 hours), requires ac power

Battery problems are my biggest concerns on the gamepad, and with it needing a power brick it won't even be convenient to have it plugged in when playing.

Will gamepad chargers be available as an accessory day one?

has any preview said if the universal remote function will...

CONTROL YOUR HOME THEATER SETUP-ie your receiver &dvd/bluray?

i've see several glowing, easy to setup and control your TV comments, but not one comment if you can control several devices - concurrently- like a harmony remote/universal remote.

all i want it able to do is change hdmi inputs- which from comments it will do @the tv level, on the receiver, change hdmi input from catv input to game , able to control volume of the receiver, able to click say a "watch movie" icon on the screen and it, changes receiver input to dvd, and allows you to control your movie via the gamepad.

we know the gamepad is supposed to do catv & TV controls, but so far no one has said anything about receivers.

my living room setup is going to be:

hdmi from catv & dvd & WiiU to Receiver (4 hdmi inputs -one output) one hdmi cable to TV and all the switching will be done via the receiver.

Sounds like the Wired guy is coming from the same place as me with those 3 things. They're the features that make the U a lock for me, so it's great to hear they not only work, but in some ways are preferable.

I really hope this is the case in the US it would open a lot of doors for MMOs on the console

add a little more MiiVerse to this and damn

Just read the whole thing, and I found it to be pretty positive. The only thing I differ on is I like the ability to use an ac charger, don't get me wrong it would be nice if it had USB, but since this is something that you can play while you're not in the same room I kind of like being able to plug it into a wall in another room.

I think we can refer to Chris Kohler by his name ...not just "Wired guy"

We badly need a thread on WiiU games that can be played just using the gamepad.

Hopefully the launch OT will have a section on this.

I fourth that. One of the best features in my opinion.

It's kinda interesting, developers will seemingly have to choose whether a game has truly deep use of the GamePad (ex. ZombiU) or Off-TV support.

Yeah.

A quick summary of what launch software supports what would be rather helpful.

For now, refer to this list http://www.giantbomb.com/off-tv-play/92-7482/

Yeah, the Wired article made sense of a lot of confused questions I had in my head about this thing, not to mention that I can finally understand why this Off-TV support could be really great. It seemed really confounding and superfluous at first, but nah.

Interesting mechanic indeed. I really do worry about how this will fare in the marketplace because literally everyone I've mentioned this to either thinks it's an accessory or is completely confused as to why it exists or what it does. I worry the thing could very well become a niche category if Nintendo continues to miss the mark on its messaging. The "Wii" brand name might be able to carry it far enough however. We'll see.

I doubt this will be a sentiment shared by many, but Chris has always struck me as more "gamey" guy and enjoyed Nintendo handhelds in the past -- I think he's more open to handheld gaming for that "intimacy" factor.

NeoGAF news of the year -- Kobunheat is engaged (the post references his fiancee).

When's the GAF bachelor party?

- battery problems (3-5 hours), requires ac power

I wonder how annoying the battery life will be -- if at all.

I just found out AC 3 supports off screen play! ^___^

Nintendo really needs an icon for this on the back of their boxes.

Yes. I saw that in the other thread. That was a good find.

Are we going to have to dig into the manuals to find this information out. Should Nintendo not mandate that there's a simple icon or graphic on the back of the game box that tells you.

The risk of off TV play, is that it'll become popular, but then the odd game here and there won't support it, so people might get annoyed when they can't easily flip to the gamepad.

Alternatively it might be so popular that most games do support it, and less games choose to innovate with gamepad/TV interaction

It's about 80-90% of the reason for me to get it. If a game doesn't support off TV Play, I'm not going to get it.

I do wish they'd have come up with a snappier name for off TV play. PadPlay or something. So on the game box it can say "PadPlay supported".

The range of off the screen play in my home will dictate whether or not I buy certain games. If I can play a game of Madden in my bed before I go to sleep it's pretty much an instabuy.

The thing about the range of the Wii U is that the Wii U does not have to be plugged into a tv to work so there is no hassle in moving it around. It's a small light console that can be moved anywhere there is a plug meaning you can move it outside if you want to if you have a plug. This is why offscreen play will be so nice. It's basically like having a portable system that needs a plug.

So if you want to play in bed just plug the system up in your room.

So it's a Game Gear.

Yeah, I'll get a second power brick if the range is not sufficient for my bedroom so I can keep the cables in my cabinet.

OT, but Schuelma was banned?

Also, Go Nintendo are reporting that Wii U's are beginning to ship.
He was begging for a WiiU megathread in another thread. He and many others were banned either begging for one or complaining that there wasn't one.

With battery life the way it sounds, a 3rd party better take advantage of the oversized battery compartment ASAP.
