It saves a lot of plastic, deal with it.

Isn't it pretty much that Wal Mart forced everyone to manufacture this type of case due to the specific way they distribute products to their shops?

To know whether or not this measure actually saves plastic, instead of just reducing shipping weight, we would have to know how many cases are discarded due to production errors or damaging during shipment compared to regular DVD cases.

There certainly is a reason such cases (at least with Xbox games, don't know about Wii U) aren't used in Europe - likely because the trade-off isn't favourable to manufacturers.

I think it depends how close you are to their warehouses. I'm in Pennsylvania and they have one in New Jersey. I've gotten some things the very next day after they've shipped out. However depending where that warehouse is I don't expect that this time.

Yeah I'm in NJ, I get any PC parts I order insanely fast. All of my video game pre-orders take for ever.

That guy on the front of the case looks extremely dippy.

He's one of the NFL's best wide receivers.

You have no idea how much of the experience of buying a new game in hardcopy, you spend just start at the innards of the gamebox... you DON'T.... KNOW

While thats normally true with collectors editions, I dont usually bother with normal versions.
Theres nothing in there, not even a manual usually :(
I like the way Ps3 did it.

Also, proper Us version cover art

I'm picking up Assassin's Creed III later on today.

It's going to suck having the game but not the console lol.

Wow the guy who made the thread for the rounded disc edges is getting shit on lol. Good thing I included it in this thread as a minor point since it wasn't thread worthy.

I like he new boxes, although I wish they went to the size of PS3 cases, much cleaner and smaller.

Chickdigger probably doesnt care too much. It was an interesting observation IMO though.
I always kind of wondered why disc edges had to be so sharp.

Those reduced-plastic cases are horrible.

Less protection for the discs, and while it might reduce costs for publishers, they don't pass those reductions on to us.

Reduced shipping weight means a reduced carbon footprint per case, as it takes less energy to ship the things because of it. Sometimes the benefits are an externality and cannot be accurately measured.

I really wonder what's NewEgg's problem. Some of the games already out still have the 18th listed on their site.

So this means Wii U is "guess, if Dolby Digital is supported or not, even different releases by one publisher may or may not support it". smh

AssCreed 3 - no dolby digital logo
Rabbids - dolby digital logo

We can only know for sure once the games are played to see if the option is there. Might be a mistake on Rabbids (almost might make it a collector's item if it gets fixed, in fact Lego SW The Complete Saga on Wii shipped with the Dolby Digital logo, no joke).

Edit:

They could still save a lot of plastic without completely compromising the structural integrity. The 3DS cases are the best example of how to do it. Squares are easier to implement in production, while being structurally superior (by far)

These eco boxes aren't as efficient as they should be, neither in practicability as well as in saving material.

I guess the logo sells the ECO PR SPIN but I would agree with you they do not function as they should

They're an absolute nightmare, and won't save a lot of money since the form is more complex. (increased maintenance costs, higher ratio of faulty cases etc...)
Square holes are easier to produce and retain a whole lot more structural stability.

The worst part is the disc holder being on such flimsy support beams. It's counter productive and could've been solved a lot better.

I'm all for saving material, as it's part of a responsible attitude and it's not going to disappear again.

Hell I would actually love to switch to paper sleeves with nice prints and booklets.

Noticed something in the instruction manual of Scribblenauts.

Getting Started

1.Turn Off Wii U console by pressing the Power Button

2.Insert The Scribblenauts Unlimited Game Disc into the disc slot on the Wii U

3.Turn On the Wii U console by pressing the power button.

4.Touch the Scribblenauts Unlimited icon on the touch screen to start the game.

That's odd..

Indeed. That'd be the first slot-loading drive I see that does loading when powered off.

Wii does it too IIRC, it just powers on by itself when you try to feed it a disc.

EDIT: Or ah, you still have to press the power on manually. Now that's kinda odd.

But the instruction manuals usually say you should turn the machine off before inserting new media. Was the same with the 3DS manual.

Anyone know why a bunch of folks got banned in the rounded discs thread? I just want to make sure I didn't miss a rule change and risk a ban. Thank you.

Probably for complaining about there not being a WiiU megathread/too many WiiU threads

Could you cite any examples? I live in Europe, I buy a lot of 360 games from many different EU countries and still have yet to see a single case with stamped out sections like posted above. For a short while, a few cases (Assassin's Creed 2 as an example) had sections of thinner plastics used for the disc tray section. But those vanished.

While in general game cases use much thinner plastics today than just a few years ago, stamped out sections seems to be a speciality not seen in European Xbox cases.

Reduced shipping weight means a reduced carbon footprint per case, as it takes less energy to ship the things because of it. Sometimes the benefits are an externality and cannot be accurately measured.

Reducing shipping weight in this way doesn't necessarily reduce the cases carbon footprint if manufacturing them is more complex or produces higher amounts of waste (defective cases due to manufacturing problems, ...). This measure seems to have been forced by Wal Mart due to the specific way they distribute products to their stores as well as their importance in the North American market. Wal Mart only see their transportation cost and don't care about increased complexity of production.

I don't care about game cases (I throw them in the plastics bin and keep my discs in a wallet), I'm all about the environment. But: Calling these cases "Eco" without any further data seems very premature to me. Just because someone claims a measure to be beneficial to the environment doesn't make it a fact. We won't do nature any good utilizing superficial measures lacking any real value.

If they are actually eco friendly, I'll gladly accept them - I'm just not convinced so far.

Man, apparently newegg sold more pre-orders than they had available stock for paper mario sticker star.

I hope that doesn't happen with my NSMBU and ZombiU preoders, that'd be a bummer.

It's not going to matter if I get a broken game or my game gets broken and I have to replace it, AND the case, anyway.

And as noted at the least there's gotta be ways to more effectively save plastic while still protecting the disc, like doing the square thing at least on the manual side, or shrinking the case. Though I'd probably want more Walmart to fall over dead so their gross influence goes away.
