[ARCHIVE UP] The Giant Bomb "We've Got A Wii U" Live Stream

That was an extremely informative stream.

If this type of stream happened yesterday I feel like a lot of people would have held off on buying the system. Nintendo was smart with their embargo.

Maybe the big N will get their shit together at some point.

I hated everything I saw. What a fucking atrocious piece of hardware.

Those load times in the OS? Unacceptable. Jesus Christ, I became impatient just watching.

This is not next-gen.

The entire thing screams half-baked, half-finished. The hardware, the OS, the games, Nintendo Network, all of it. It all smacks of having been a rush job that was launched months too early.

If you bought a vita and a wiiu I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but a bum console aint one.

On a more serious note, this is sad.

Why do I get the feeling Jeff dropkicked the Wii U to bits after the stream was done :D

As a whole my first GB stream, and it didn't just derail the hype train, it went back in time and shot a young George Stevenson in the head before the notion of locomotives came to him forever changing history.

Next gen my ass.

I think this is the first time I've had a comprehensive look at new hardware, and wasn't even remotely interested or even impressed (beyond some inconsequential gamepad tricks in Nintendoland).
I completely understand their frustration, all of which stemmed from legitimate issues.

Man this was a poor showing..near Vita levels lol.

Nintendo better have bombs to drop soon...because man.

Whores like me will eventually buy it because Mario and Smash Bros...but fringe guys...

dude.

Glad I got a PC that can run games now....might do that for a bit lol.

Ball is in Sony (lol) and Microsoft's court now...hopefully they dont shit the bed with Kinect 2.0, no used nonsense, and more. Sony will probably shoot themselves in the foot with the price and Microsoft might go for a more it also plays games approach but Nintendo blew their early chance here.

oh well.

In terms of bad showings for hardware launches, I didn't think Kinect would be topped anytime soon. Yikes... crashes, low frame rates, network issues, long updates, long load times...

it smacks of Nintendo being in over their heads to me. They don't seem to understand that most people have spent the last 6 years using quick, friendly and easy OS's in their phones, tablets and even video game systems (look how far 360 and PS3 have come in that respect). They want a piece of that action (hence TVii) but are not equipped to do it. The front end is SO important for these kinds of things and they really dropped the ball.

Giantbomb still the best in the business though. It's stuff like this that will keep me coming back with that yearly subscription. They are real. No censoring and are willing to tell it like it is. Great stuff.

I liked it. I'll get one eventually but I already knew that. The gamepad stuff looks crazy good when its well implemented, only bad thing I got off from the coverage was lazy 3rd party developers being extra fucking lazy

With Nintendos own launch games and the absolute shambles that is this things OS, dontcha think they might be a little bit lazy here too?

Very thankful giant bomb provided this stream. The system is clearly not ready. I hope not too many people will buy it until they fix this shit.

Games built for Wii-U: Yes
Mass Effect 3: Maybe(if for some reason you haven't played ME yet and you just want to play the third one)
Everything else: NEVER

And I haven't seen this much loading since Crash: Wrath of Cortex

Since a lot of people seem uninformed about this,

The error at the end was because they took the game out mid-load so that they could hear the loading music loop, that wasn't a fault of the WiiU.

i arrived in the stream around the time of rabbit mario party like game and except that game , all others where filled with framedrop and/or tearing

OH god those load times !!!!

I've owned every single Nintendo console ever released. Everything from the SNES to the Wii I bought on launch day. No WiiU launch games were "must play immediately" status for me, so I was happy to wait for a price drop on a Nintendo console for the first time. Even then, I'm astonished as to what I've witnessed here. From the agonizingly slow OS to hardware locked accounts to poor performance out of most 3rd party games. I'm no longer waiting for a price drop, I'm waiting for Nintendo to fix this thing.

Wow, Nintendo, just wow.

i will go out on a limb and say that everything was decided in japan with no input from the american side of things. or if the americans did recommend stuff, it was generally dismissed.

essentially this. i don't think it'll be too hard in the future to find one, so when enough games are out that i want to play, i will get it. or maybe i can just wait until the thing's dead in a couple years and snap it up cheap while they work on their handheld/console hybrid.

sure, I agree with pretty much all of the criticism here. What I mean is that it seems serviceable for what i'd want to use it for (I play all my games on PC so it would be mainly for the offline multiplayer and first party titles), this wouldnt really be my main place to play games.

i'll wait till its cheaper/killer game comes out and get my Nintendo fix. Hopefully they can patch most of this stuff

Watching this stream made me feel a lot less bothered by not being able to get a Wii U anytime soon.

Jesus christ Nintendo, fucking fix your shit and stop being bullheaded.

Yeah, that is my first impression too.

So, naturally, the question is will they improve it like MS and Sony did with theirs? My guess is not until Ninty see the fruits of their shitty labors and get desperate.

I think everyone here is well aware of the issue. Wii U is not ready.

I've always liked GB. I'll probably sign up soon. They seem like really cool guys.

Unless they did a paperclip trick, to eject the game mid-load, they presumably pressed the Eject button. Which should have sent an immediate signal to the console to say, "Hey, the disc is being ejected, don't try to load any more from it," and would have popped up an immediate error.

The Gamecube kicked up errors if you opened the lid mid-load (Animal Crossing was a weird exception, since the entire thing loaded into memory on boot). I think the Wii would do the same if you pressed Eject. (But I might be wrong about that.)

I'm surprised Brad isn't more angry. At least Patrick has the option of giving the Wii U he bought to the office and keeping the one with his account on it himself. Brad is the one who is really fucked if he wants the user name he made.
He can just delete it and make it again though, he hasn't spent cash on the store.

It all started with the Wah Wahs, been downhill ever since.

Seeing the account locked to one console still in this day and age was pretty much the deal breaker.

Eh the Wii U will probably still end up outselling both the 360 and PS3 combined. I blame blind Nintendo fanboys and casuals for Nintendo's laziness.

I think a lot of these issues just cannot be fixed with patches. The OS can get faster if they optimize but the question is, without a full redesign how much can they actually accomplish. Patching can only get you so far when your underlying framework is extremely flawed. Time will tell if they can actually turn OS around.

The Nintendo games look like a lot of fun and they sold me on Nintendo Land, which I thought sounded stupid before today. CoD also looks good and that's probably the most important third party game at launch.

It's a shame about the OS and poorly optimized ports, though. The error screen at the end does not leave me confident that this is a fully finished product.

Huh?! What are you even talking about? The Vita launch was actually pretty great. Rock solid hardware, some great games, solid OS and little to no major issues...

The Wii U on the other hand is a complete and utter diaster of a launch in quite literally every way possible. The Vita was a GOD-tier launch compared to this mess.
