I seen the guy before, he usuallly hangs around the Times square area. saw him in the train a couple of times. he had shoes but they were tore up, they must have finally fallen apart over the summer.

There's a guy around here who pretends to be shivering in the cold without any shoes or socks.

I've seen him being given shoes on at least three different occasions over the years, but they vanish the next day. Guy probably has more pairs than Imelda Marcos by now.

God Bless.

I'm really tired of hearing all the negativity about the NYPD there are really good officers, and no one ever gets recognized. Good to see fellow officers doing good, and being noted for doing it.

a very good deed, but I find the comment about not having shoes before hard to believe. his feet don't look like those of someone who has never had shoes before. or maybe the detail isn't visible in the picture?

Yep, people forget that there are almost 40,000 NYPD officers. The vast majority of those I've met have been nice & helpful. Sure, the organization is probably corrupt at the top levels and there are always going to be bad seeds, but they're definitely not entirely bad.

A drop of shit can spoil a whole glass of whine.

Dude probably was hoping someone would buy him some shoes, but that doesn't make it a 'scam' if his goal was to get some shoes on his own feet so he wouldn't freeze to death.

The sad reality will be if the guy tries to return the shoes to the store without a reciept.

I used to volunteer at a soup kitchen and the only way to help some of the homeless was to feed them. Give them any clothes or money and they try to find the quickest route to get booze. Not all, but at least 40%.

They didn't want a job or shelter, it makes it really hard to aid them.

Anyone else have problems doing this for long? My legs fall asleep and get all tingly.

I keep sitting until they pass the numb phase and then any movement is like an electric shock through your legs.

Plenty of people do nice gestures all the time. Giving homeless money and clothes. These are things that common people do all the time and often far more significant than this.

I remember giving a homeless guy a 40 dollars on halloween a few years back on the Queens side of the 59th street bridge. He said "Be careful there are a lot of ghosts and goblins out there tonight, but you be the baddest goblin of them all" Now give me a fucking medal.

NYPD = Still shit. Still corrupt

He made you "gun" your car that's not entrapment you did it on your own accord. I'm not that type of police but your anger seems to stem from you getting caught doing dumb shit

The NYPD generally pick on and harass the hell out of homeless people. It is common in Harlem for them to give tickets for "open container of alcohol", (as if the person were drinking publicly) to people that are collecting cans for the 5 cent refund.

They are also blatantly racist in their targeting. I live in Chinatown and the police turn a blind eye to things they would arrest black people for in a heartbeat (selling bootleg movies, gambling in public etc...). Chinese people gamble openly in the park playing card games on the park tables, money on display. I have even seen Chinese people gambling on a courthouse stoop, with police less than 20 feet away doing nothing. Let 3 black people roll some dice on a Brooklyn sidewalk and see how fast they'll be in the back of a paddywagon.

Good for this cop as an individual but the NYPD is still crooked as fuck. As long as it's only blacks and latinos getting the shit end of law enforcement, nobody cares.

Sheesh they are really going all out on this one. Just watched 2 different news shows this hour and this story was on both of them. And he is going to be on Today NY tomorrow...

Please keep in mind that NYPD cops (and cops worldwide) harass, attack, displace, steal from, imprison, and kill homeless people every day. It's nice of this guy to do a good deed, but please remember the many people who face police violence as a fact of life.

I always hated how juvenile some people are in hating the police, especially some people found in gaf threads. They are still just people. They are capable of kindness, just as much as being an asshole sometimes.

You must not have had the luxury of contact with the NYPD. This thread isn't about bashing so I won't go on about it but the hatred people feel towards them is well deserved.

Just saw this on the news. The guy who sold the cop the shoes offered to use his employee discount on them, too. Cool story, wish we'd get more stuff like this.

yeah this story jumped the shark and gone stupid. There's really not a need for interviews and such. Just read in the paper that there was an honoring ceremony and he got ceremonial cufflinks from the commissioner. Gimme a break...

shayamalayan twist: man is not actually NYPD cop, but an escaped Pretender.

that's the only plausible explanation.

Is this really happening today? This sounds far too similar to the stories I read of the NYPD harassing black musicians in the 40s and 50s.

Yes it's still happening today and will always happen as long as there are minorities and poor people in this country. My wife worked at a homeless rights organization in NYC; on top of being homeless these people consistently get fucked with by the NYPD.
