New Tomb Raiders screenshots - You'll want to protect her

i just want them to put me in a big tomb like the first 3 games, and let me die OVER and OVER again.

like seriously that's what the best part about the old games were. every jump felt like your last, like you could die at any moment.

how is it so hard to do this?

Apparently someone somewhere decided that modern gamers are too stupid to be able to play a game like that anymore, that they have short attention spans, and they need magnetic platforming and white ledges everywhere to guide them safely out of a level because OMG if they die they might never pick up our game ever again!!!
No more precise platforming,no more hard puzzles,no more deadly traps, everything needs to be "epic" and streamlined in order for the player to safely progress from one setpiece to the next. Then hit A for Awesome and a glorious cutscene will appear to try to make you feel emotional for the character of the movie-game with some dramatic hollywood music playing in the background. The game is not a game anymore it becomes an "experience" ,one that takes itself way too seriously and demands from you to accept it in that way.

Weapon mods in Tomb Raider? I dunnnnnoooooo. Starting to look like a third-person Far Cry 3 (but more linear) with Uncharted mechanics, and I don't want that from Tomb Raider.

Still giving the game a chance though.

Everything the devs show is nothing that I want from a Tomb Raider game,it's pretty sad really.

so far there is nothing that resembles the real Tomb Raider games in this reboot thingy, the devs talks about things the old fans might like but show nothing and I really doubt they are just hiding the good stuff.

Thanks for that. Man, that music - so good.

the music in the old Tomb Raider games were always the most perfect scene setters ever

whenever the music kicked in I just fucking KNEW I discovered some amazing ancient bit of architecture

it was used sparsely, but just enough to emphasize the incredible things you were discovering

God I want OG Tomb Raider to revive so bad :(*

Also Tomb Raider is the first and only game I was ever injured during playing

GAF has no universal consensus on Underworld (or any other game), although from what I recall few people said it was 'awesome.'

I think it's worth playing, with caveats. But it is very much Tomb Raider.

I actually really like Underworld (only played Anniversary, Legend, and that one). That Thailand level is one of my highlights of this gen, actually.

I liked it too, I just would add caveats before someone unequivocally recommended it as 'awesome' ;)

There are very real camera problems with the game and the combat is at honky as ever; and, as discussed earlier, it's far too easy for my tastes. And a bit too guided with the ledge marking and such

Yeah was about to say the same thing. The whole "protect her" is really getting old. I can't wait for people to get over it and actuallly talk about the game in the TR threads.

It's kind of hard when the only new info we get from the developers on the game is about how much we'll want to protect her.

Yeah, those are all fair criticisms. I also think the later levels kind of lose the focus that is present in the first few levels, as well as getting more and more ridiculous in concept. But definitely the feeling of exploring ancient crypts is worth it. :)

This new game does seem like a big departure, but I'll give it a shot.

It really sucks that she can't swim in this. I love interacting with water in games, especially if it has that wet clothing effect going on like in Legends or Uncharted. Wasted opportunity for Wet Tshirt Lara pics. :p

Oh yeah regardless of the Uncharted influence I'm still pumped for this game. As I've stated countless times a story/character driven take on a franchise does not bother me at all.

Narration and atmosphere can go a long way with me and are what attracted me to video games in the first place. The dictatorship of gameplay must end.
gameplay is what makes games actually games

Why? Technically we shouldn't be shooting at anything in the whole game but a couple tigers. :(
I'd rather be able to spot a tiger's haunt through environmental clues and avoid them, and be rewarded for paying attention by having them attack some mercenaries instead.

The advice I'd give to the devs of Tomb Raider or Splinter Cell or Mirror's Edge 2 would be the same - let me get through the entire game without killing anything, please. And no, that doesn't just mean replacing a gun with a stun gun.

Aiiiieeeeeee.

So... is this official PR?
I mean, did someone really look at the above and think "awesome, the press will absolutely love brown dislocated ankles!"? Also, dat brown color scheme and uneven texture work. It hurts. I was never a real fan of the TR franchise, but I kind of feel sad looking at the screens and previews for this game.

As i said in a previous post Core's Tomb Raider games were built around gameplay (up until Chronicles) while Crystal's TR games were built around story and characterization. They seem obssesed ever since Legend to turn this series into some kind hollywood movies and from the looks of things with the upcoming game they have now pulled all the stops into making it one.

The only Crystal TR game I played through was Anniversary and it seemed like it emphasized gameplay to me. The time trials and secrets to collect around the levels were fun and added challenge.

I wonder if this will be the one I finally play. I like the idea of Tomb Raider games, I do not like the jumping clunkiness and hit or miss landings of shit like Anniversary. I'd rather have Uncharted or Prince of Persia style climbing around.

God damn, these screens look rough. Crappy brown textures all over the place that seem to blend into each other

I'm hoping that the island that Lara finds herself on isn't entirely populated by evil goons. Show some open areas with platform objectives. I'm not even sure what game I'm looking at anymore.

Also, did that cult thing get scrapped? Seems like all the coverage lately has had mercenaries as the focal point.

It's not hand holdy. It's called "I don't have time for this pixel jumpy bullshit only people with aspergers enjoy"

It's not hand holdy? Uncharted platforming plays itself. The platforming segments are extended bits of really pretty looking nothingness, where you cannot die and pussy skills are all that are rewarded.

If you think Tomb Raider platforming is "pixel jumpy", I hate to think of what you feel about games that actually require the motor skills of someone who isn't an eighty nine year old grandmother. Super Meat Boy must make you cut your wrists.

WHOA IS ME, I MIGHT HAVE TO ACTUALLY LEARN SKILLZ IN A GAME

It's probably why I barely play anything but RTS and RPGs lately (and fps on the PCs and not on consoles) and just watch lets plays of games I know I'd like but hate to play.

I have SMB but I hate 2D platformers so I've never touched it.

So what you want is something that is not Tomb Raider. Which is fine!

But I don't know why you tried to describe Tomb Raider as some labyrinthine march toward unimpeachable skillz, the early games provide a fair challenge, but the platforming is hardly intensive. What they -do- provide is the ability to make mistakes, learn from them and get rewarded for your improvement as a gamer. It doesn't simply automatically assume the gamer is crippled or mentally handicapped in some way... it assumes that with a little application of the knowledge you accumulated thus far into the game, you will overcome the challenge.

Modern games feel that everyone who comes into them must in some way be either five years old or have the motor skills equivalent to a zombie on marijuana; in either case, there is no sense of reward for completing aspects of the game and no tangible sense of progress since the entire game is one uniform blob of blah gameplay tedium.

And sure, for some people that's the game for them. Some people HATE challenge. They feel the same amount of reward whether or not they ever encounter a single impediment in their entire run. And that's fine. It's just not the way Tomb Raider should be. Tomb Raider games SHOULD have platforming that requires some basic skills, it should not be like Uncharted where the window for making a jump is so large you might as well close your eyes the entire time as the result will be the same.

Edit: Also, why would you buy Super Meat Boy if you hate platformers? Oh, humble bumble?

My experience is redoing whole entire segments because I just barely missed the jump at the end. I'd hate it less if I could savescum because that shit is not fun at all.

Sure you can say "Oh well get better at playing". Yep. Let me tell myself that after spending an hour on a single segment because it's too unforgiving because either terrible camera angles give no proper sense of depth perception, or whatever.

I'm watching a lets play of Uncharted 2 right now, and like actually playing the first game, I realize I'd pay anything for a game with just those kind of platforming elements and JUST the puzzle solving sequences. No combat whatsoever. 50 hours of it. I'd eat that shit up.

Edit: Also, why would you buy Super Meat Boy if you hate platformers? Oh, humble bumble?
It was gifted to me first before I could ever get it in a bundle from someone who played it on the 360.

just put the Uncharted games on the easiest setting and play them. The combat becomes so easy you can almost just walk through the game blindfolded and the platforming and puzzles are already so simplistic and devoid of any thought or challenge that they require no difficulty reduction.

just keep that shit out of my Tomb Raiders please

What game did you play? Anniversary is littered with automatic checkpoints, and I have no idea how depth perception gave you any issues when 99% of the jumps are just the longest possible ones.

Your complaints sound suited to the original TR... not Anniversary.

That was the first uncharted on easy :( The combat still sucked dicks.

I only have aniversary. I was trying to get something from the mansion and this one jump made me want to give up entirely.

If you were in the gym or the pool... there are some jumps that are not possible and require you to move something or pull a switch to lower a bar to swing from. :p

I've put at least 80 hours into Anniversary. I always felt it was one of the best 3D adventure games I played in terms of control.

No it wasn't the moving part. it was one of the long jumps to a ledge. It took me an hour to reach it because I apparently wasn't jumping just right. That's what I remember.

I'm still cautiously optimistic that this game will turn out okay. 7.5s, 8s, 8.5s. Probably not anything much higher unless they're throwing us a wild card with what's actually in the game. The media/PR has been atrocious though. They should probably fire everyone involved with that. Though the controversies may unintentionally end up being a good thing if the game is good. Certainly got more press that way than a TR game would typically get.

Is the "I want to protect her" thing originated from the developer? Because that's just weird seeing that this is Lara Croft we're talking about and not say... Princess Peach. Lara Croft should be able to kick a large amount of asses without anyone "protecting her."

Sure, this is an origin story, where Lara is still a greenhorn, but then again the tagline for this game is "A Survivor Is Born" right? Which gives a pretty contradicting vibe to the whole "I want to protect her" stuff.

Such a weird, weird thing.

Lara can protect herself, but just not in this game.
