Though the wait is rough, I can't even imagine how polished this game is going to be when we finally get it. That Saturday night at 11:59 is going to be the longest minute ever.

The longest minutes will be those where I'll be heading home with the game in my hands. D:

The rocks, ground, and that root in the first shot are the only things I'll admit look a bit janky. Especially on slopes the ground textures can look a little stretched, but I understand why the ground is mostly flat (hint: gameplay). Hopefully the rocks can be fixed - still got 3-4 months of development (more polygons & better textures), but I'm not holding my breath. I do hope, like that review of Mario said, the team didn't suddenly realise they were 'playing with power' and only really push the extra processing power in a few segments.

We'll just have to hope this game is super successful and they build Pikmin 4 from the ground up, haha.

Nintendo is never going to push stuff like putting a lot of effort into ground textures. We'll see some amazing looking games, but Nintendo is done with that kind of race.

:/

I hope you're wrong. I can't believe I actually have more faith in Nintendo about something than you metalslimer :p

I mean it's not like I don't think they will make stuff that looks really good, just look at what they did with the Wii in games like Galaxy, DKCR, and Epic Yarn. But do I think we'll see something like Uncharted from Nintendo? No.

"The hell"? Ah the painfully forced pretend surprise. I've actually played games all generation, 'cause the only way this is impressive is perhaps if I played none at all. I've played games like Viva Pinata, like Banjo, like Ratchet. I know what next-gen games should look like. This game is a up-res Wii title, with some basic next-gen shaders and effects in place. The geometry and texture work is barely up to standard. Character models that are laughable. I mean, shit, it's fine if you think it looks great, but let it go that it's some shocking thing that others don't.

There's no pretend surprise here, you can take your cringeworthy pretension somewhere else. I never said it was "perfect" or anything close to that, so you can stop with the false accusations too. I would be just as surprised with claims that it looks "perfect" or beyond this gen as I am with yours that it looks "extremely mediocre". Both viewpoints are equally hyperbolistic. The game looks gud.

And of course it goes without saying that all of this is my opinion.

nah Nintendo still intends on making beautiful games on their hardware IMO. Skyward Sword and Mario Galaxy showed me that they love pushing their hardware to the limit.

Never said the games wouldn't be beautiful. Art style can go a long way. Will they ever make something like this or try for a more realistic style?

I don't think so.

Edit: Picture too big

Game looks fantastic.

But, you know, "its not next gen" "nothing impressive about it" "I've seen better" Blah blah and all that.

Why would Nintendo build a console they're never going to use?

Your post also presents a flaw. So 50 years from now, the games are going to look the same? Come on now.

There's more that can be done with hardware power than just high resolution textures. I imagine we'll see much more open worlds and things going on that couldn't be accomplished on the Wii.

Guess I'll add my two cents to the graphics convo. Personally, I think it looks great as a whole, but one simple thing they could do to improve things is smooth over the edges at the bottom of rocks -- it's too delineated right now, making it look very much like a prop plopped down on a set, rather than an organic part of the landscape. :)

Yep, I even made this picture a long time ago.

Little touches like that would make this game look so much better.

Such as?

If what you're saying is really true then Nintendo chucking in an extra 1GB of RAM and clocking the CPU/GPU above what is necessary is still a waste on their part.

Without engaging in this conversation, to be fair, appeasing third parties would be a completely rational justification for why.

I'm going digital! This game must be a permanent part of my Wii U architecture. Also, it was incorrect when people reported it to run at 60fps right? I'd always thought it was said to be at 30, but I won't be arguing if it's higher.

Prehaps maybe 2 or 3 third party's actually care about the added specs and I think one of them was surprised they received so much power to begin with. So it's not like Nintendo was forced into it like say Microsoft was when dealing with Epic.

Regardless, Nintendo "appeasing" would sound so funny considering they did just the opposite when building the Wii.

"We're Nintendo, we submit to our own authority."
"OH GOD, PLEASE DEVELOP FOR WII U!"

You sure about that?

A lot of people were saying how that Zelda Tech demo at E3 2011 was not that impressive... but that's GAF for you

da hell

maybe technically, I dunno, I'm sure it's completely doable on the other systems, but OMG SO PRETTY

well usually games that come out later in the lifecycle look better than quickly created tech demos. It'll come out in 2014 probably, combine that with the fact that it is likely their showcase game that I'm sure that they'll use. It will be nawwwceee.

This game looks way to good too still be considered just a Wii up port. Like seriously after watching the video IGN uploaded I think it's a really beautiful game.

It didn't really show that it was pushing any new technology, but it looked amazing. I don't give a fuck if existing consoles can already do that, because I don't see Zelda on there yet.

Have faith in the 1st party studios like Retro, EAD Tokyo and Monolith. They will deliver.

Teams where the old bosses like Miyamoto and Tezuka are more directly involved aren't going to be producing eye candy titles.

I don't see how this graphics are mediocre. It is simplistic, but it is a game about looking very closely to the ground, I don't know how much "next-gen-ish" you can get with this kind of art direction. Maybe lot of light stuff? water? I really don't see how those are bad in this trailer.

I know it can look better, any game can, but it doesn't look mediocre at all, and looks way better than the previous Pikmins.

This is what I'm talking about. Technically, that Zelda demo wasn't anything above what the PS3/360 could do. Nintendo wasn't pushing anything. But they have some of the best artists in the industry and the style just looked amazing. That's what I was saying to begin with. Nintendo is going to disappoint the people who want them to become Crytek or Naughty Dog, but they are going to make some amazing looking games.

vocal minority that think it's mediocre.

Well on a technical level it is mediocre but for what it is I think it looks very pleasing to look at.

Well, at least the textures have a lot of detail now. And judging on the shadows and light in the cave, it's not completely flat.

I'd like a bit more detail, but most grass textures in other games are very similar, but with a couple of grass sproutes here and there. I'm sure that will help a lot. There can't be too much, cause you have to be able to see most of your pikmin.

Sometimes I think people forget how the original 2 Pikmin looked. Pikmin 3 isn't some gorgeous work of art, but I think people do give it a little less credit than it deserves

Was that for the Gamecube or Wii? If you compare Sunshine to Galaxy, do you see any difference? If Pikmin 3 were made exclusively for Wii, I think you would have seen a nice little jump from its Gamecube roots. This looks like what I imagine the Wii version would look like up-res'd and with a few more shaders and slightly more complex models. Only slightly.

I like the art style, don't get me wrong. But this game is not ambitious on a technical level. Not even close. Its not even close to matching the best of last generation.

It scares me that people actually convince themselves of stuff like this. Genuinely mental.

Didn't know where to post this, and most of you guys have probaly seen this already, but the Wii -> WiiU transfer procedure is ADORABLE.

Pikmin walking across bridges and through tunnels in a virtual landscape carrying my save data, until they take of in a rocket (the SD card)

Nintendo really annoys me sometimes, but this attention to detail is truly impressive.

I think it looks fantastic. Its hard to explain, but it looks "solid" and incredibly organic. I like that it doesnt have that unreal engine plasticky look.
