Doing random giveaways is absolutely fine, and something tells me in this case that Superbot meant absolutely nothing but goodwill by it, but I do agree that this has some relatively negative consequences for forum discussion. It feels like GAF's visibility across the industry continues to grow, so stuff like this might become more and more common.
Superbot, I think you're super cool. But Evilore might want to address stuff like this, somehow.
I think it's awesome.
It would be different if the OP had just been sucking ass and hanging off of SuperBot - but he simply wrote a BlogGAF post about why he was excited for a game - saying nothing about the developer or their abilities - rather why the character roster was so great for him.
I totally agree that if it were "Hey guys, game is looking brilliant, I love it, Day One, SLURP SLURP etc." - than anything but laughter would be entirely inappropriate. However a post reflecting on why Sony means something to him, and then receiving a giveaway because he is unable to play the game - is just a fantastic gesture from Superbot. The fact that this thread is garnering any negativity at all, is far more concerning to me, than the implications that the giveaway could have in the future... we should be happy for the OP, giving props to Superbot for supporting a long time fan, and moving on.
Since it has been brought up however - the implications this has from a discussion/forum vs Industry/Developers standpoint, are far from serious - and hardly worth involvement from Evilore.
I will say, that the Fuse thread I read yesterday reeked horribly of PR and/or overly positive/blinded impressions. If that sort of behaviour is being rewarded by a developer/publisher - than absolutely it should be looked at in detail.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that GAFers and developers should be as transparent about giveaways/prizes/help as possible - ensuring that positive impressions aren't being rewarded - and that they're simply doing it for the right reasons (e.g. to be nice, nothing more). I feel that simply talking about the negativity that this precedence could set, is disrespectful to the great people at SuperBot* who had nothing but good intentions. Maybe we should be taking this discussion to another thread?
* I am not trying to defend Superbot, suck up, receive a prize etc. I have zero interest in a Sony mascot fighting game... I just respect what they have done for the OP.
