So I got a package from Superbot in the mail this morning

Doing random giveaways is absolutely fine, and something tells me in this case that Superbot meant absolutely nothing but goodwill by it, but I do agree that this has some relatively negative consequences for forum discussion. It feels like GAF's visibility across the industry continues to grow, so stuff like this might become more and more common.

Superbot, I think you're super cool. But Evilore might want to address stuff like this, somehow.

I think it's awesome.

It would be different if the OP had just been sucking ass and hanging off of SuperBot - but he simply wrote a BlogGAF post about why he was excited for a game - saying nothing about the developer or their abilities - rather why the character roster was so great for him.

I totally agree that if it were "Hey guys, game is looking brilliant, I love it, Day One, SLURP SLURP etc." - than anything but laughter would be entirely inappropriate. However a post reflecting on why Sony means something to him, and then receiving a giveaway because he is unable to play the game - is just a fantastic gesture from Superbot. The fact that this thread is garnering any negativity at all, is far more concerning to me, than the implications that the giveaway could have in the future... we should be happy for the OP, giving props to Superbot for supporting a long time fan, and moving on.

Since it has been brought up however - the implications this has from a discussion/forum vs Industry/Developers standpoint, are far from serious - and hardly worth involvement from Evilore.

I will say, that the Fuse thread I read yesterday reeked horribly of PR and/or overly positive/blinded impressions. If that sort of behaviour is being rewarded by a developer/publisher - than absolutely it should be looked at in detail.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that GAFers and developers should be as transparent about giveaways/prizes/help as possible - ensuring that positive impressions aren't being rewarded - and that they're simply doing it for the right reasons (e.g. to be nice, nothing more). I feel that simply talking about the negativity that this precedence could set, is disrespectful to the great people at SuperBot* who had nothing but good intentions. Maybe we should be taking this discussion to another thread?

* I am not trying to defend Superbot, suck up, receive a prize etc. I have zero interest in a Sony mascot fighting game... I just respect what they have done for the OP.

When it's meant for you to play that shit, it's meant for you to play that shit.

I tweeted during Sony's E3 conference that I wanted a PS3 to play Beautiful Katamari and Last of us, and the next day I won all of this at the first E3 I attended.

nice you got bags of dope

Maybe he posted it because he is very excited about his gift. I know the feeling, this year has been super awesome for me as well. This company that I will not name as they ask me not when the year started has made 2012 a wonderful year for me.

In January they flew my wife and I to Vegas to join them at CES 2012. It was 5days/4nights trip
They bought me a pair of PX5 wireless headphones
Numerous 3D blurays and 2 extra pair of 3D glasses (battery kind)
Just about every major game launch title this year for PS3/Xbox was mailed to me
When I told them not to send me any more PS3 games as my launch PS3 broke they sent me a new PS3 and a $50 psn card
I just received my last package from them last month, it was Halo/Black Ops/Zombie U with a letter telling me its been a great year......imagined that. I should be the one telling them that in a letter.

Point is I understand the OP, everytime I got something new I wanted to tell the world and not to brag but to show that this big company cares for its customers in a way they may have never thought. They never Facebook or tweeted or anything about all the stuff they gave me.

Stuff like this can happen and its just a company being cool with no PR spin on it.

And have you posted a lot of impressions of products from this company on here?
I'm not saying you have, but that's exactly the PR benefit this particular company could be looking for. Not disclosing who this company is only compounds the issue here.
It does make me wonder how many other instances of this happening here there are.

MS give away points for everything though. That said MS give away more than nintendo. I remember a Bungie signed up xbox 360 for a fan. I can't find it though. It was a awesome thing, some developers are very cool like that. Just wanting to do good because they can.

Edit: Ok I think I got it, a kid sent his xbox that was signed to get fixed because of red ring, and got another 360 back so bungie hooked him up with swag and a better signed 360 or something to that extent (maybe a shell or faceplate?).

Edit: It was a cat helmet signed by a lot of bungie people.

But this thread told me they most likely have ill intentions :).

Some people are just on edge because of the whole dorito gate thing I think. They mean well, they just don't trust anything. They're going all politics on stuff. Though Journalists shouldn't be bribed to do something they normally wouldn't even if they want to be bought. However even Fox and MSNBC are bias.

[your ad could be here! Now only one (1) PS Vita game for every five lines]

seriously though, that was a nice gesture, Clockwork

This thread is going to be extremely hostile to this viewpoint, so I don't really want to argue about it, but I'll just say I think it sets an extremely bad precedent.

There's no ethical guidelines that are being violated here (or ethical guidelines for forum posters, period), but it makes me uneasy all the same. I am genuinely unconvinced this does anything but motivate people to be insincere and hyperbolic in their genuflection for future products, which I am guessing means it is a marketing success. But it makes for shitty posting when you can not tell if someone is posting an honest opinion or a contest entry.

If it were me, I would not have posted about it or, having done so, would simply give that stuff to charity.
Don't mean to be snarky, but it sounds like you need to take a break from message boards if this is truly your perception of what's going on. This is moving away from cynicism and branching into paranoia.

Is it weird that the first thing I noticed wasn't the bags of drugs but what looks to be the 360 version of COD?

Nope, this is the first I mention it on the interwebs and it wasn't off neogaf where it started.

We're not saying Superbot had any ulterior motive at all - in fact, it's obvious that what they did was super cool.

But if you don't see the value for marketers regarding the concept of rewarding people who contribute to hyping up their game as a blend of astroturfing, I don't know what to tell you. The value for marketers is there, and I see no reason why they wouldn't use it on the largest video gaming forum on the internet. It just makes sense.

Again, Superbot likely had no such intent, but it's not tough to see a publisher or developer who would.

Real marketing would just continue getting free advertisement instead of giving people bribes. They call it word of mouth. However after receiving his new vita and PSAs the op posted in the PSAs of that he enjoyed the game so far. That was his first comment about the product. His soul is lost...

That's awesome. Someone asked me for my address here one time years ago (I'd say a trustworthy Dev) and I gave him my info and never heard back lol not sure what that was all about. Yeah I know, I'm already dead, etc.

Your first stalker.

You still didn't answer the question originally posted in response to you. Where did the OP praise superbot or the game he received in his original post from another thread?

If it you were, you probably wouldn't have received anything because it seems you're so high up on your perceived high horse not actually making relevant posts that you never would have actually posted anything sincere or warming enough to warrant a second glance.

Hey guys, you're not allowed to enjoy a nice gesture because apparently being a member of GAF and having the right to an opinion means you should be held to the same standard as a journalist. Good to know buddy!

I feel that simply talking about the negativity that this precedence could set, is disrespectful to the great people at SuperBot* who had nothing but good intentions.

So this turned out roughly as expected.

That's nice of them. Hope you'll have a blast with the free swag :)
Why don't I ever get free shit from half-forgotten goth bands for pimping them on Facebook? :(
