Introduction

Welcome to NeoGAF’s third annual Game Soundtracks of the Year thread! This thread will serve to create a common point of reference for NeoGAF’s favorite game soundtracks from 2012, place a spotlight on the industry’s musical talent, and expose people to great music they haven’t heard before. In addition to conducting a poll and sharing the results, this thread will be home to a comprehensive archive of the year’s music and other related information.

Voting Rules

For your vote, select your three favorite game soundtracks of the year and rank them in the order of your preference. Your first pick will receive three points, your second pick will receive two points, and your third pick will receive one point.
Sample Ballot

1. Game A (Will receive 3 points)
2. Game B (Will receive 2 points)
3. Game C (Will receive 1 point)

Honorable Mentions (if any)

It's not a requirement, but if you want to include the soundtrack's cover art, you certainly can. As a starting point, here is a compilation of game soundtrack cover art from this year.

Voting will end on January 6th at 11:59 PM (PST). The votes will not be counted until after the voting period closes, so you can edit your post and change your vote as many times as you would like before then.

You’re highly encouraged to do more than simply list your selections; please provide links to standout tracks if you can and take the time to describe what makes the soundtracks special to you. We’re hoping that everyone will want to join the conversation and take the opportunity to discover new soundtracks and composers. Have some fun with it!

Note: Xenoblade Chronicles will not be eligible to win this year. Although the game was officially released in the United States in 2012, it has been a presence in these threads for a while now and it won top honors last year. Other than that, any soundtrack for a game that was released in 2012 is eligible.

Note: Because we did not clearly specify at the launch of this thread, licensed soundtracks and partially licensed soundtracks are eligible for votes this year. Depending on participant feedback, this could change for next year's topic.

-----------------------------------

Thread Features

Archive

Instead of beginning the thread with a massive, pre-constructed archive like in years past, GhaleonQ and I will gradually build it up as the thread progresses; hopefully, this will lower any perceived barriers to entry for this topic. In addition to soundtracks we have found to be noteworthy, we will include every soundtrack mentioned in your posts. We will also work to include your favorite songs and your descriptions of the soundtracks, so be sure to share your personal highlights.

The format is as follows:

• Game Title (and title from country of origin, if different)
• Album Information (links to databases like VGMDb and online retailers)
• Composer(s)
• Sample Tracks (song titles with links to YouTube or other appropriate websites)

Composer Profiles

For the 15 soundtracks that receive the most points, we will provide a brief overview of the winning composers, including discographies. This will help to highlight the individuals that created the soundtracks and to encourage people to check out their past works.

Related Recommendations

No single work exists in a vacuum. As with any other type of music, it’s natural to think “wow, I have got to find something else that sounds like this” after you hear a great game soundtrack for the first time. Because this thread is largely about discovery, we would like to open it up to related recommendations of other game soundtracks that aren't necessarily eligible for voting this year.

For example, for those of you that enjoy FTL : Faster Than Light's soundtrack, I could point out that Mass Effect's soundtrack might hit some of those same buttons. Both before and after the voting period ends, you’re more than welcome to give recommendations in that vein, and we will incorporate them into the results thread.

If any of the links are broken, or if the sound quality for one of them is poor and you can find a higher quality link, send me a private message and I'll make sure to fix it.

  1. Kid Icarus: Uprising (music samples here -- official site)
    jbvdGz4zHizu1M_e.jpg

Nintendo went to great lengths to pull talent from across Japan and it shows. The sheer quality of production and variety present in this soundtrack is staggering. Considering Sakurai's last project in Smash Bros. Brawl offered a similar cornucopia of musical indulgence, the effort here does not surprise. Every track expertly complements the action and the wild range of story beats, and is consistently a pleasure to listen to. The link above features 11 samples and each is a must-listen.
  2. Rhythm Heaven Fever
    jogS2xbfnSgW9_e.jpg

Not very much needs to be said about Rhythm Heaven Fever's awesome soundtrack, as the series is known for its incredibly polished and catchy tunes. With each one so good and original besides, it puts the average licensed music rhythm game to shame. As usual, Tsunku delivers, and with the series' move to home consoles with the Wii, the sound quality in-game has been improved considerably, which is naturally welcome.
  3. Nintendo Land (Thread dedicated to the music, sample links within)
    jbzQl2Dg6n5YAy_e.png

I think the awesome production values of Nintendo Land surprised a lot of us. Most impressive is the music, which arranges and remixes tracks from throughout Nintendo's gaming past and gives up some of the best versions of these familiar tunes in existence. Going back to older series such as Balloon Trip and finally hearing that catchy Hip Tanaka melody in this new form is glorious and nostalgia at its best. My personal favourite, which unfortunately does not appear to have an audio rip on Youtube at this time, is the fantastic remix of the Donkey Kong arcade theme with the Donkey Kong Country main theme. Hearing both of those melodies together is joyous and it works amazingly well.

-------------------------------------------------------

Honourable mentions:

- Journey
- LittleBigPlanet PS Vita
- Paper Mario: Sticker Star (dat jazz)
- Bravely Default: Flying Fairy (I haven't actually played it, and it hasn't been released outside Japan, so it's hard for me to vote for it in such a strong year -- maybe next year if it gets localized)
- Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 (Game Freak always delivers)
- Final Fantasy XIII-2

-------------------------------------------------------

...shit, I'm going to have a lot of honourable mentions, you guys. Great year for game music.

1. FEZ (leaps and bounds ahead of everything else for me)
2. Journey
3. Mass Effect 3 (only other one that came to mind at the moment)

1. Journey

Absolutely exhilarating soundtrack. Austin Wintory elevated Journey's soundtrack to the same level as any other element of the game.

Apotheosis

2. Hotline Miami

Hypnotic electro music that really gave a 80s vibe to the game. The rhythmic beats almost mimic the action and the trial and error sequences, or at least my brain was fooled to believe that.

Hydrogen

3. Sound Shapes

This soundtrack deserves this mention just for Beck original track "Cities". It's also the best level in the game as it really feels like the whole level elements were made with the song in mind, and even its lyrics. Really great stuff.

Cities

Honorable mention:

Lumines Electronic Symphony

Aww no Xenoblade. Game of the forever should win soundtrack of the year every year :p
Looking at the 2011 topic, it won. That's fucking cool GAF, real fucking cool.

K uhh with Xenoblade gone I guess my list goes like this along with one of my favorites from each game
1) Kid Icarus: Uprising - Ruins of the Temple
2) Atelier Meruru - Tree God
3) Final Fantasy XIII-2 - Plains of Eternity

Looks mediocre to some but I really enjoyed the OSTs of these games.

Not at all :p

Glad to finally see some more KIU representation on this page; it took too long. I haven't played FF13-2 yet, unfortunately, but I'm sure it has some great tunes.

1. Final Fantasy XIII-2 - A huge departure in style from XIII (and every other FF game for that matter), XIII-2's soundtrack managed to floor me with the sheer amount of variety it holds. From metal to electronica to progressive rock to music that sounds as if it came right out of the 80s and beyond. I'm incredibly impressed with the range that Suzuki/Mizuta/Hamauzu managed to put on display here. Mizuta in particular really surprised me. After XI and 4 Heroes of Light, I was not looking forward to his contributions here, but he sure as hell made me a believer after all was said and done with. If Lightning Returns' soundtrack is even half as good, then I've already got a soundtrack of the year for 2013.

2. Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 - BW2 pushes the limits of what the DS can do, sound-wise, and I am all the more grateful for it. From the smooth jazzy stylings of Virbank City (DAT BASS) to the no doubt Megaman-inspired Rival battle theme, BW2 blows every other game in the series out of the water with its soundtrack. I'm practically drooling, imagining what Gamefreak will pull off with the 3DS's massively improved sound capabilities. :X

3. Paper Mario: Sticker Star - I hope you like jazz, because there's a TON of it here! Jazzy revamped classic tunes abound as well as original offerings (Surfshine Harbor and the poisoned forest theme are easily my favorite songs in the game), and the game's soundtrack as a whole is a big step up in quality, both with production values (live instruments, WOO!) and composition-wise (I was not terribly impressed with SPM's soundtrack). I hope the trend of Nintendo putting more focus into their soundtrack quality for handheld titles continues, as nothing but good can come out of it.

Honorable mentions:

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance - Shimomura manages to keep 1-upping herself with every soundtrack she creates, and KH3D is no exception.
Kid Icarus Uprising - An all-star cast of composers manages to make one of the best soundtracks Nintendo's produced in years, let alone on handhelds.
Resident Evil: Revelations - A Resident Evil soundtrack that isn't filled with ambiance? Say it ain't so!

1. Unfinished Swan

2. Witcher 2 (Does this count? 360 version is 2012)

3. Er... Dead or Alive 5, I guess? This year has been pretty bad for soundtracks, for me.

I'll pretty this up later. Maybe see if I can think of some better answers too.

Yeah, Xenoblade's OST has been around since 2010. As it won last year's vote, it shouldn't be eligible, even if the soundtrack was deserving of its title last year.

I'm still going through a bunch of soundtracks so I'm not voting until about the last week or so, but I can't wait to read everyone's posts if they decide to post why they listed the soundtracks they chose!

I'm sorry! I just wasn't a fan of either style he went for in those games. ;___;

1. Spec Ops: The Line - The soundtrack fit the mood of this game perfectly. Every track went a long way towards creating the ambiance and atmosphere of the game and it is well implimented.

2. Hotline Miami - Every track was a joy to listen to, I can definitely see this one being the overall winner for the year. It will probably show up as a choice in the vast majority of posts in this thread.

3. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die - The boss music especially put me in a panic'd mood that I haven't felt since the NES days. Some of the best tracks of Dark Souls is some of the best video game music I've ever heard. The Asylum Demon theme was perfect, and introduced you to the true danger and fear a boss battle should impose.

Given the case that Dark Souls: PTD doesn't count for the same reasons as Xenoblade, I will give a 4th replacement pick that I don't know right now.
Quoting this since I deleted the post that broke up the thread.

1. Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (Virtue is its Last Reward | Ambidexterity | Dispensary | Cabin | Recreation | Biotope | Director | Confession | Clarification | Demise | Blue Bird Lamentation)

An admittedly more ambient soundtrack with nothing quite like 999's more threatening tracks, but with an excellent main theme remake of Morphogenetic Sorrow, incredibly tense pulse-pounding puzzle room musics, and the tear-jerker that is Blue Bird Lamentation, Virtue's Last Reward takes the crown for me this year.

jbvdGz4zHizu1M_e.jpg

2. Kid Icarus: Uprising (Main Theme | The Return of Palutena | Dark Pit's Theme | Viridi, Goddess of Nature | Wrath of the Reset Bomb | Lightning Battle | Aurum Island | Dog's Theme | Boss Battle 1)

Nintendo pulled out all the stops to make Pit's comeback something to remember. Of note is the fact that all the songs are synced expertly to the action, so even if you're playing sans the game's excellent dubbing, you'll find yourself in an incredibly crafted audio/visual gaming experience. Utterly bombastic, Kid Icarus Uprising - like the game itself - reminds me of an actor gleefully playing to an audience.

3. Journey (Nascence | Apotheosis)

Meditations and sand; best use of strings in a game soundtrack. Just a beautiful experience all around.

Honourable mentions:
Hotline Miami (Hydrogen | Inner Animal | Miami Disco | Knock Knock)
FTL (Space Cruise | Milky Way | Deep Space | Mantis)
Katawa Shoujo (Wiosna | Conchord | Parity | Red Velvet | Shadow of the Truth)
The Walking Dead (Alive Inside | Armed With Death | Goodbye | Take Us Back).
Persona 4 Golden (Shadow World | Time To Make History | A Sky Full of Stars | True Story | Snowflakes) [I would have put it in number 1 if most of the music hadn't already been from 2008]

I'm with Dantis. Imma hafta think carefully and research, but it's looking like I'm going for a very weak list this year, whereas 2011 was about 8 worthy of mention.

I'm sorry! I just wasn't a fan of either style he went for in those games. ;___;

4 Heroes' boss fight theme was good spice! I will not have it maligned! :p

i think this is kind of silly though, even if it did win last year. it only hurts people who didn't get to experience the game until 2012.

I should probably check out Hotline Miami, I guess... had no idea its soundtrack was so beloved here.

EDIT: reporting back, listened to bits and pieces of the full OST on youtube. Hmm... I think I respect it more than I actually like it. Some very distinct pieces and it has a unique sound, but few of the tracks really spoke to me. I'm not going to vote for it personally, but I can absolutely understand why many would. It seems like an objectively great soundtrack.

An honourable mention with an explanation wouldn't hurt, I think. I didn't vote for Sonic Generations last year, for example, because it was all remixes, but threw it in the honourable mentions pile.

It wouldn't be fair if it were eligible for three years, having taken home top honours in the second year of the game and soundtrack's lifecycle.

Tsk tsk! :p

1. Halo 4
2. Final Fantasy XIII-2
3. Silent Hill Downpour
4. Kid Icarus Uprising
5. Mass Effect 3

I will probably toy around with this list and add reasoning later. That's my top five until further notice.

yeah, but as is this is already a list war popularity contest, so at the very least it should be about fun. i don't think a game winning twice would be such a horrible thing, though i don't think it would win this year if it were eligible.

fwiw, i won't be voting for Xenoblade. i just don't think a rule like that is very fair.

Max Payne 3, Mass Effect 3, Crimson Shroud, Pokemon Black/White 2, Katawa Shoujo, Final Fantasy XIII-2.

1. Journey

Just absolutely stunning. Admittedly, if you haven't played the game, this may not be the song to start on as it plays in the last section of the game.

2.Fez

I really loved this one and feel it's under-appreciated. It just constantly fits the mood of the game and feels right in all situations. It's also excellent work music.

3.Hotline Miami

Just stunning, and highly evocative of that 80's vice vibe.

I may come back to this if I change my mind and if I want to expand on my choices.

1. Max Payne 3: I knew from the Tears reveal that Health would absolutely knock this out of the park, and lo and behold, they did. The highlights for me were the Panama mission and the graveyard flashback. Ironically, it succeeds while making minimal use of the iconic Max Payne theme, although it is cleverly worked into some parts of the game's soundtrack, such as at the start of the New Jersey bar flashback in a mangled, slowed-down form.

2. The Walking Dead: This choice is probably partly biased as it's also my GOTY, but while the soundtrack isn't ground-breaking, it does complement the game's atmosphere perfectly. Alive Inside, nuff' said.

3. Dishonored: A fantastic use of instruments and different sounds. It kind of reminds me of Hans Zimmer's Holmes soundtrack, but way less bombastic.

Honourable Mentions: Assassin's Creed 3 - It's a shame that Jesper Kyd didn't return, but Lorne Balfe did a decent job, especially on the main theme.

I actually still need to play through most of Halo 4, curse my backlog.

I'm glad Xenoblade isn't eligible this year because I would feel bad not voting for it since I STILL haven't played it arrrrrrgh

Is Hitman: Absolution's OST available anywhere? I did enjoy a lot of that game's music, the more Southern-fried stuff especially.

I can't believe the amount of people not voting for Halo 4. Wow-wee.

1. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (mind-blowing, stunning, fresh, addictive, memorable, eccletic, win)
2. Halo 4 (epic, beautiful, haunting, memorable, fun, nostalgic of original but has its own groove)
3. Fez (retro, cool-sounding, a few standout pieces...honestly, this track, to me, is just incredible:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlBQh6N7RDw )

Most disappointing: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

I cannot make up my mind which is better...FFXIII-2 or Halo 4. They're both A+ and blew me away. Argh!
