HD towns that look like they're from a PS2 game, can't even hold 30fps. No wonder Square Enix thinks HD towns are hard.

....not just the plot itself, but his desire to have games that focuses around story and cinematics.
I know both have let fans down this generation, but just compare his direction to Nomura when it comes to FF games. Even before XIII was released, Nomura's desire was to create a Final Fantasy where players could traverse a worldmap, fly airships and vehicles and explore large towns and sprawling city's.
His direction sounded like a natural evolution and transition for the series in to more powerful hardware, whilst Toriyama's direction stripped away and scrapped core elements of the series, that fans loved and had become accustomed to.

The irony being of course its only been portable games that have been of any quality from Square this entire generation. The teams clearly all need to be swapped around; FF13+sequels+abominations against mankind perpetrators sentenced to iOS/Mobage shit forever, KH Osaka team given all the money/resources.
Well we can only hope that it does happen.
What Kitase has become is really shameful. Toriyama has always been shitcakes so he can't help it, but Kitase directed FFVI, Chrono Trigger, FF7 and FF8.

Let's not forget that Nomura started the linear corridors and lack of exploration with KH2.
I wouldn't mind that focus on story and cinematics if they weren't that mindblowingly bad. SE needs to realize that most FF fans aren't teenegers anymore and that they aren't impressed anymore by time travel stories and teens being heroes.
Crimson Shroud had a lot of text but I don't mind because is so well written.
Kitase is burned. Is like one of those bands that they can't make a good song anymore.
The series seriously needs fresh blood and a new direction from younger people.

Everything about this trailer (and indicative of the game) is complete garbage: the writing is downright atrocious, the graphics (lighting, geometry, textures) are horribly bad, the character art direction is cringe-inducing, and the assets (animation, enemies, etc.) look to be recycled from previous entries.
I've seen 5-man game developer students create something more impressive from a technical standpoint in a course of a 2-day game jam than this piece of shit. I hope to dear god that Square Enix has spent no more than a janitor salary and a trip to McDonalds for whatever this turd tries to be.

that's a different series, it at least seemed like Nomura understood what many people found appealing about FF straight of the bat.
The costume wouldn't look as bad if they had given her a shirt underneath the arm armor. Glasses and all... Looks like typical FF from the past 15 years. Can't tell me her costume looks any more ridiculous than what Tidus wore.

They'be obviously spent all their assets on huggable Lightning pillows.

Let's not forget that a) they've went back to worlds that are a little less linear & have more exploration and that b) KHII was very much a result of listening to fan feedback, they just kind of went a bit too far with that. People criticized the first game for some of its level design so they made it more straightforward. Some people found KH I hard so II was easier. The camera was criticized a lot, so they made that a lot better. The whole series has been a kind of forth & back with the makers & the fans. A more recent example would be the fact that they noticed people loved Birth By Sleep, so they've decided to take the series MORE into that direction than back to the style of the first game. And I'm sure that they'll take the feedback about the freeflow stuff into account when developing Kingdom Hearts III (it's cool but maybe they should balance it a bit better).
And my god at some of you people. This game might still be a year away from release, yet you are taking this trailer like it's the launch trailer and nothing can improve by the time the game is released.
The only thing I'm somewhat disappointed about going by this trailer is that the game isn't more action RPG-y, but seems to be more of a single player FFXIII.

How long have they been working on this? The concept art was only released a few months ago.
It doesn't look good... but I still have a bit of hope they can churn out something decent as it gets closer to release.

They supposedly said that they started shortly after XIII-2's initial release and when they had those concepts revealed it was 30% complete. So who knows.

Can someone explain to me how the Final Fantasy XIII sub-franchise isn't dead yet? I mean, nearly everyone hated the first game, and the second one bombed, yet they seemed convinced that people love XIII and are trying to milk a cash cow that doesn't actually exist.

It's mostly the head honchos. I think Square-Enix needs to do what Sega did and give fresh, young blood a crack at a mainline entry. Sega did this with Sonic Unleashed, which was far and away a massive step up compared to earlier 3D titles, despite the Werehog.
Kitase and Toriyama are the Bonnie and Clyde ruining Final Fantasy.
